‘tis the season for ... Have you finished your holiday shopping
yet? Family and MWR can help you cross those hard-to-shop-for people off your list — see the
top 10 gifts list on page 9. Once you’ve finished your shopping, there are plenty of ways for you
to enjoy the holiday season. Find a great list of free and inexpensive activities for people of all ages on page 13. If your kids are out of school for winter break, consider enrolling them in a Child, Youth and School Services’ winter camp (see page 14).
What better way to get further into the holiday spirit than by playing in the snow?! You can get outside with the Outdoor Recreation Program — see the trip schedule and winter weather survival tips on page 20 or take a holiday trip with Leisure Travel Services (page 24).
Other ways to enjoy the season: visit with Santa (page 9), try a candy cane mocha at Battle Bean (page 7) or race in Santa’s Reindeer Dash (page 26). And, don’t forget the New Year — celebrate with us; there are three parties to choose from on page 8.
Your opinions are valuable, and I’d like to hear from you. Share feed-back about your experiences with Family and MWR at http://ice.disa.mil.
Sincerely,
William E. HarveyDirector, Family & MWR at JBLM

Spending less than you make be-gins with creating goals and a valid budget — one that truly shows your income and expenses. Carefully review
your bank statements and bills to see the real picture. Technology can help you through this stage. Most banking institutions offer tools to track and categorize your spending. Remember that taking the first step is always the hardest and offers the greatest rewards.
The next step requires evaluating how you spend. Taking a close look at your spending offers the opportunity to reduce expenses. For example, your food budget can be reduced by limit-ing the number of trips to the grocery store, shopping with a list or using cou-
pons. Consider why you shop or spend
money. Is it for emotional reasons or is
it out of necessity? Understanding the
reasons behind your spending will help
you adjust your spending.

TS How can I avoid bank fees?Q:Learn the specifics of your checking account. There are three major fees: account maintenance, ATM and overdraft. If you have an ac-count with maintenance fees, ask your financial institution if you
qualify for free checking. This may be as simple as setting up direct deposit or maintaining a specific balance. If your financial institution doesn’t offer free checking, consider moving to a credit union or a community bank. To reduce ATM fees, try to stay within your financial institution’s network or visit mon-eypass.com to find ATMs without a surcharge. Reducing overdraft fees, also known as nonsufficient fund charges, can be avoided by turning off, or opting out of, overdraft protection. This will help you avoid fees, but require you to live within your means.
