Nobles and Ladies, quite often this year I’vereceived correspondencestating, “It’s been an honorto serve you this year.”

The fact is I’ve been so honored to serve you, the No-bility, over the past 5 years as a member of your ElectedDivan. Words can’t adequately portray the deep grati-tude I have for all the help I’ve received from you thesepast years. To quote Rudyard Kipling, “The strength ofthe pack is the wolf, the strength of the wolf is the pack.”

As my term closes, I must express it’s been avery exciting and rewarding year. It’s been exhil-arating to fulfill the many duties that come withthe position while juggling the calendar ofevents, OVs, Parades and other various func-tions and travel throughout the Northern halfof Arizona. It’s been exciting to spend timein the office working with Ill. Sir Jack Garretton the day-to-day business of the Temple aswell as the budget. The position of Potentatehas indeed become a full time job.

It’s been rewarding to know what we’veaccomplished as a team this year. Ill. Sir JimMiller began working on Masonic Unity in 2009.Ill. Sir Phil Houghton took it further in 2010 andthis year, with the help of our Most Worshipful GrandMasters James Rowan and Brook Cunningham, theNobility and Divan of El Zaribah have taken MasonicUnity to new heights. As of this writing, we’re in theprocess of starting a Masonic Degree Team as well asestablishing a new Masonic Lodge at El Zaribah.

New members this year nearly doubled what our av-erage annual number of new members has been overthe past several years. This is due to our restructuringthe Membership Development Team and you, all theNobility. Also, as of this writing, we’re working on cre-ating Shrine Clubs in San Luis and Hermosillo, Mexicoand I’m sure your upcoming Divan members will con-tinue to keep it going and build on it. I can foresee aShrine Club in Puerto Penasco as well.

Shrine meetings, Parades, Official Visits and at-tending meetings and events of our other Masonic Bod-ies have really kept us going. On several occasions I’vebeen told, “I just don’t know how you guys do it.” My re-sponse, “It’s like the movie, For Love Of The Game.

When you love what you’re doing, the rest doesn’tseem so hard.”

Holding true with my motto this year, “Havin’ Fun,Gettin’ It Done”, we tried some new things and resur-rected some other fun things to give you and yourLadies additional opportunities to gather and inviteFriends and Family. It started with inviting Al BahrShriners to join us for the Yuma Silver Spur Parade,a very successful “Night Before The Pote’s Ball,”Super Bowl Party, Easter Brunch, Mothers DayBrunch, a Kentucky Derby Party, Father’s Day Picnic,

the most successful Circus in our history, a won-derful Lake Havasu Ceremonial weekend, a

Victorian themed Masquerade Ball, a verysuccessful Night of the Child and a Christ-mas Spectacular concert.

This is my last Arabian Tales article asyour Potentate and it is of course so bittersweet. Speaking of the rest of the Divanmembers, Hut, Ed, Gerry, Chris, Jack andNate all made my job so much easier thisyear. You have a Divan that truly works to-gether and I want to thank each one of

them for their support. Please give themyour support.

We had a Pote’s Staff that was simply out-standing: our Chiefs of Staff, Mark & Cindy Lueck,

who we couldn’t have done without; Executive AidesBill & Trish Enloe, Larry & Pam Frank, Don & JodiLassiter, Pat & Miki McNichols and Randy & CindyPeters; Executive Consultants Bill McLemore & JeanGlover and Lyman & Lynn Hatch; Personal Aides Bob& Nancy Beffel, Mike & Ann Richards, Lee & MarilynFults, Steve & Jackie Lancaster, Jasper Nichols &Linda DuBois, and Pete & Lou Ann Speas roundedout “The Calvin Crew.”

Valerie and I wish everyone a Joyous Christmasand a New Year filled with Happiness, Good Healthand Prosperity. As your Potentate and First Lady, it’sbeen such a thrill and honor to serve all of you. Welove you all.

And Jesus said to him, “If you can!” “All things arepossible for those who believe.”Yours In The Faith, Tom Calvin, Potentate 2011“Havin’ Fun, Gettin’ It Done”

Greetings from the bucket closet. I’m happy to report, “all is well in all our

buckets.” Of course I can’t write the actual figures, come to a Stated Meet-

ing where I report the actual dollar amount in all our accounts.

Speaking of which, if you missed the phun in our November Meeting, you

definitely need to know our good friend and “Pote-to-be” has been donned a

new nickname - as clown “Hutsy Putsy.” This actually seems a little drawn

out… I think it would be more appropriate and easier to simply call him “Putz

Man.” That would go real well with the theme song from Bat Man, except

From the Treasurer...

after the music, instead of saying “Bat Man,” fill it in with PUTZ MAN. Just

kidding PUTZ, we know you’re going to do a great job, and we’re looking for-

ward to your year.

I think all of us would agree our outgoing Pote has done a great job, prob-

ably mostly attributed to his sweet Lady Val and all her efforts, but whoever

gets the credit, it’s been a good year and we appreciate all your work. Thank

you both.

Happy Holidays to you and yours from us and ours!

Nobles and Ladies, I’d like to take this

time to wish each and every one of you a

Merry Christmas and a Happy, Prosper-

ous New Year. Being that this is my first

year as Recorder, it’s been an experi-

ence I will long remember. One thing I discovered is being Recorder

requires long hours and sometimes late nights before you get home.

The best thing about it is being able to work with Nobles and Ladies

like you guys. It’s been a pleasure serving you all as your Recorder.

I’d like to remind all the Unit and Club Heads our General Fund

is getting low and if you can find a way to donate to the Temple Gen-

eral Fund so we can continue to pay bills, that would be really ap-

preciated. As I’ve said before, if you donate to the General Fund, we

can transfer money to the Transportation Fund if needed, but the

Recorder’s Message...

Transportation Fund can’t transfer money to the General Fund. Iknow you can raise more money by having a charitable fund-raiser, but every so often, have a fraternal fund-raiser for yourTemple. Enough said.

So many Clubs and Units have worked so very hard again thisyear to raise money – with outstanding results, I might add!

I’d like to thank each and every one of you - Units, Clubs, No-bles and Ladies alike - who put in long hours, hard work, bucketsof sweat and tons of fun, to produce those results.

I’d also like to thank all the Sandbaggers for their generous do-nation to the General Fund. When it comes to fund-raising, youguys know how to get the job done. Yours in the Faith, Jack Garrett, PP, Recorder

Is Your Due Date

for the February Issue

of the

Arabian Tales

As we approach this Holiday Season, let’s think about giving gifts that willhelp each other and the local economy. Look to those that advertise in theArabian Tales to offer you a good deal.

Rather than that fancy item produced in a foreign country that took awayAmerican jobs — this year let’s be different. Instead of something that gets putin a box and wrapped with foreign made paper, how about a gift certificate forthe local barber shop, hair salon or a gym membership? Who wouldn’t like toget a car wash certificate? (Or a book of them?) Oil changes or auto detail-ing, house-cleaning certificates, locally owned restaurant meals.

There are many people who could use gift certificates for local grocerystores, gas or long-distance phone cards. I think you’ve got the idea by now.

Let’s help our local businesses, with their financial lives on the line, keeptheir doors open. Please don’t send me any barbershop certificates, though!

We of the Arabian Tales wish everyone a Merry Christmas, a HappyChanukah and a healthy and prosperous New Year. Fred Wulff, Editor

...uniformed units...

2011’s rapidly drawing to a close. By the time you read this article

we’ll have had our OV and Christmas party.

We thank Doug “BB Clown” Fry for his serv-

ice as 2011 President. Joe “Stoolee” Couey

was also thanked for his service as Vice

President and for the contributions he made

to the Unit in memory of his wife Mary Lou.

For 2012, we elected George “Z Klown”

Mather as President; Bill “UHOO” Enloe as VP and Peter “Chick Pea”

Lantka is continuing to serve the Unit as Sec/Treas. 2012 will be a year

of training and growth. This will be the year to get started if you’ve ever

had the desire to be a Clown.

Our regular Joeys will be ending 2011 with an appearance in the Fi-

esta Bowl Parade with El Zaribah Shrine and start off 2012 with their reg-

ular meeting Jan. 2nd. For all the new Joeys, we’ll schedule classes in

make-up, costume, Parade props, skits, balloons, face painting and what

it takes to be a Shrine Clown. We’ll have a full schedule of sanctioned Pa-

rades to participate in and other events to bring laughter and joy to chil-

dren of all ages.

El Zaribah Clown Unit looks forward to representing our Shrine in all

their events in 2012. Come out and join us in making ourselves known in

2012.

Clowns...

band...

The Band Unit was chartered June 24,1896, the same time as ElZaribah. Our purposes are to furnish entertainment for the Nobility and topromote El Zaribah before Masonic Bodies

and the public.

We’ve decided to open our Rehearsals to

all those interested in Band music. Re-

hearsals are the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Thursday

nights, 7:00-9:00 pm. You’re welcome to join

us (no cost) regardless of age, sex, Masonic

or non-Masonic affiliation, or musical proficiency. John Locher (480-926-2583) is our Band Unit President. Please let him know in advance so wecan prepare a folder for you.

We have an 8-12 member EZ – Pops sub-Unit that performs lively up-tempo music, specializing in Ethnic and Oktoberfest celebrations. Com-plete repertoire’s available for Polka, Dixieland, Patriotic, Christmas, Party,Swing dancing and listening pleasure. This well-rehearsed sub-Unit’sbeen in existence since 1987. It’s free of charge to Masonic affiliates; do-nations to El Zaribah Shrine Band appreciated.

May you have a safe and happy Holiday Season and may God con-tinue to bless the USA. MEL, Sec.

Seasons Greetings from your friendly servers behind the chow line.

The year’s almost over, and one of the questions we have to ask our-

selves is, “Have we done as much as we could have for the Children”?

We’re a fraternity focused on fun and fellowship but our goal is to support

the Shriners Hospitals with “spirit, time, talent and means.”

Culinary...

To begin December’s article, we believe it only appropriate to send out

“good job” and “way to go” messages to our Chief Rabban ‘Hut’ Hutson,

who, during Nov.’s “Chief Rabban’s Night” came through with flying col-

ors. Of course, we couldn’t expect anything less from a person who, along

with his other titles, is proud to include “Greeter.”

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by many

family members and friends. It’s also a time

that gives us the opportunity to pause and

reflect, at least for a moment or two, on our

good fortunes and offer up a prayer for those

less fortunate.

Nov.’s monthly meeting produced a larger

than usual turnout of members. That was as expected since it’s the time

for the annual Greeters Election for 2012 Officers. If the ease experienced

at filling the slate of Candidates was any indicator, perhaps the Greeter

Unit is facing a resurgence in interest and participation because for the

first time in a few years, a readily available number of persons made their

interests known and stepped forth to assume leadership positions. We’ll

begin the New Year in proper fashion by announcing in our next article the

names of those elected, those truly far sighted and gifted individuals who

possess the experience and skills necessary to guide our Unit through

the coming year, building even more on its stability and prominence.

In closing, I want to say a special thank you to the 2011 Elected Offi-

cers who led us through a sometimes very taxing year. To begin,

Sec/Treas Gregg Curry; 2nd VP Jim Rinehart; 1st VP Larry Howard and

Pres. Bob Richmond who, in spite of experiencing 2 heart attacks during

his tenure, is still managing to hold the gavel and take charge at every

meeting. It’s too bad we don’t have space to thank everyone in the Unit

by name for all their work in making this a successful year. Suffice it to say,

it was successful and all the members are very appreciative of your ef-

forts.

The Greeters wish a very Merry Christmas to each and every one of

you and trust the good Lord will bless you with much in the way of health,

happiness and good will.

Greeters...

I believe we could attract and retain more members by stressing the

benevolent aspect of our fraternity as much or more than the fun and fel-

lowship we enjoy. The calendar year’s almost

gone, but we still have 5 months remaining be-

fore we go dark, and I hope we put those

months to good use for the Children.

The Culinary Unit meets the 3rd Tuesday,

and fund-raising will be an important topic for

discussion. Parade participation will be on the

agenda, and we’ll have other items of great importance to consider, so

please try to be there if you can.

We decided to dispose of our Parade vehicles, so we have 2 little

Model T cars, a trailer and a towed rig with 4 bicycle seats available. Any-

one interested should contact Mike Fenno.

Remember Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7th. Other December dates to re-

member are Bill of Rights Day on the 15th, Hanukkah begins the 20th

and Christmas Day the 25th.

Remember to say Howdy to Nobles David Cole and Hal Resnikoff,

who had birthdays in November. I’ll see you soon. Ralph Jones, Scribe

Page 10: December 2011

10 Arabian Tales / December 2011 www.el-zaribah.org

Howdy Ya’ll! Hope this finds you and yours doing just fine. We’ve en-

joyed another fun and prosperous year and certainly hope you found time

to join us on one of our rides, parties or other func-

tions.

A “hats off” is in order to our retiring Captain

Charlie KOONistra. He and his Officers have done

a great job of keeping us focused and therefore suc-

cessful. Thank you Captain, and thanks to your

lovely Lady Stef, as we all know she’s primarily the

one responsible for your good actions.

Mounted Patrol...

December brings a time of hope and thanksgiving. The Oriental Band

is participating in a Christmas get together and

mini-concert with the Drum and Bugle Corp. Last

year was so much fun that we’re looking forward

to another great time with the group that shares

our rehearsal night. The food is always fantastic

and the audience is so appreciative!

Last month, the Band participated in the Tempe

and Anthem Veteran’s Day Parades with our float

and we’re planning on being in the Fiesta Bowl in

December with the float as well. We had a few new additions to the per-

Proper respect was shown throughout the Flag Burning Ceremony

Where oh where has the year gone? Already we’re looking forward to

2012. By the time this is published, the LOH will have participated in the

Tempe, Anthem and Winslow Parades and completed our first Flag Re-

tirement Ceremony.

October Stated Meeting Flag Presentation was

by Nobles Scrimager, Trundy and Johnston. The

following LOH Nobles were present participating

and/or doing their “things:” Wax, Hudson, Folker,

Massey and Hageman.

Lake Havasu Ceremony and/or Parade partic-

ipants were Nobles Hudson, Scrimager, Wax,

Folker, Hettervik, Massey and Hageman.

The LOH Officers and Membership wish everyone a Merry Christmas

and a Happy New Year.

The Legion of Honor Unit consists of Nobles who have served Honor-

ably or are currently members of the armed forces of their country. It’s an

Honor to belong to the Legion of Honor Unit. You served your country and

now have the opportunity to serve the Shrine and have fun at the same

time. We lead the El Zaribah Shrine Parades, present the Colors at Stated

meeting and various other functions as requested by the Illustrious Sir.

Nobles, those of you with computers and access to the Internet can

access the Legion of Honor Web Page at:

http://members.cox.net/johnston30/ for information regarding Legion of

Honor Scheduled Functions. Eligible Nobles and their Ladies are invited

to check us out and attend our 6:00 pm dinner meeting held the 3rd Mon-

day of the month. The business meeting is in the LOH Room at 7:00 pm

each month except June, July and August.

Another good thing is we’ll be back in the Fiesta Bowl Parade. Not

quite sure of the Parada Del Sol yet, but try to make them both, they’re a

lot of fun.

If you didn’t get a chance to join us for one of our rides at the ranches,

try to come see us this year. The rides are a lot of fun for everyone.

Happy Holidays from the Mounted Patrol. Looking forward to seeing

you down the trail, and until then… Vaya Con Dios

In my humble opinion, the Patrol’s had a really good year marching in

Parades, forming the Honor Aisle, working at the Shrine Circus and gen-

erally, having a good time doing what we do. The camaraderie of the Unit

and our Ladies is what makes it all

happen.

Sally and I wish the incoming Pa-

trol Officers as much, if not more,

success in 2012. The Patrol’s fortu-

nate to have members such as our

incoming Captain Floyd Smethurst

and his Lady Susan who’ve opened their home to us for a wonderful

Christmas party.

We also wish the very best Holiday Season and New Year to all the

WOW - what a way to finish the year and start a new one, to finish off

with the past Board and welcome new and

exciting leadership to the Unit.

The past Officers want to thank the mem-

bers for all their support and hard work done

for our Unit. Give yourselves a hand and

again, thanks.

Let’s all welcome the new Sheriff and his

deputies - Pres Jim Pitt; VP Phil Houghton, PP; Sec Ray Benson (happy

to have you back) and leading the posse Treas. Gary Woodfill. I’m sure

they’ll bring a lot to the table, and we’ll remain as strong as we have been.

Once again, kudos to all.

As the Parade season comes to a finish, it seems we saved the very

best for last. Anthem was a great turnout, and for those who went to Black

Canyon, it was done in great fashion. The Florence Parade was great as

always and again we outdid ourselves - can’t wait to see what next year

will bring.

I understand we’ve shown an interest in the Phoenix Electric Light

Parade. We have the chance for 2 or 3 of our rigs with lights in that Pa-

Transportation...

rade. I hope all of you will join in and assist with helping these brothers in

there venture… please bring home the awards.

Once again we’ve been invited to the Fiesta Bowl Parade. What a

chance to show our stuff as Shriners, supporting children. This, gentle-

men, is a chance to end the season in style, and we all look forward to it,

so get ready to roll the last of Dec. I understand after the Fiesta Bowl Pa-

rade the Unit with their Ladies are going to get together for lunch about 3

pm at the Spaghetti Company on Central, so try and make it - it will be a

blast.

Remember we do have vehicles for sale for our new members, some

of them can be owner financed so keep this in mind.

December’s always a busy month for the Apache Wells Shrine Club.

The luncheon and business meeting will be held Dec. 1st at the Apache

portant meeting, as the Election of the 2012

The new 2012 Officers will be published in our January 2012 Directory.

The reason is that although we elected them in November, there will be

NO COMPUTER CLUB MEETING IN DE-

CEMBER, as our regular scheduled meeting

would be the day after Christmas. Moving the

meeting to another date incurs conflicts for

the membership with other Unit and Club

meetings.

The Officers and Members of the Club all

wish a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year for everyone read-

ing this.

All members of El Zaribah and their Ladies interested in computing are

invited to attend our Club meetings. Ladies as well as their Noble attend

and participate. The Club meets the 4th Monday of each month at 7:00

pm except June, July, and August and when there’s a conflict with Christ-

mas. The Red Fez Room is where many of us meet prior to the meeting.

Start the New Year by scheduling attendance at one of our meetings

and bring either expertise, software problems or hardware problems. Ex-

perience the camaraderie of others interested in computers.

A lot of good information is presented at each of our meetings. Don’t

be shy about bringing your problems for us to work on. There are no dumb

questions, as the answer to what might be thought dumb is what several

Thanks go to all those who attended the Joint OV for the eight Units

and Clubs on Nov. 18th. We had a good turnout and a fun evening. The

participating Units and Clubs were the Drum & Bugle

Corps, Roadrunners, Patrol, Band, Oriental Band, Sand-

baggers, Computer Club and DeMolay Club.

The Drum & Bugle Corps is completing 18 years as

a Club in El Zaribah in December. There’s not that many

Shriners around now who even remember when the

Temple didn’t have a Drum & Bugle Corps. We’ve main-

tained a good size throughout the years, but we’re al-

ways looking for those Shriners who enjoy music,

whether you’ve ever played an instrument or not. We

meet weekly on Tuesday nights at 5:30 pm, but the ca-

maraderie makes the weekly trip to the Shrine well worth it. Talk to any

Drum & Bugle Corps member if that interests you.

The Drum & Bugle Corps is pleased to have Fred & Lil Rogers as part

of our group since our inception 18 years ago, and they continue to bring

food and snacks for our meetings that everyone enjoys. Thanks, Fred &

Lil, for your willingness to contribute to our fun and fellowship.

hope your New Year will be healthy and successful. Have a joyous Christmas

make a difference, you’ve never been in bed with a

mosquito” Anita Roddick

Provost Club Meetings are held on the 2nd Thurs-

day of the month. You’re invited to join us in the Red

Words of Wisdom: “It’s good to have a train of

thought, providing you have a terminal.”

The Provost Club motto is “Protecting and serving the Shrine” and our mis-

sion is “to provide security at the Temple events and assist the Potentate as

requested.”

Join us if you’re interested working as security for your Shrine. Please con-

tact Captain Don Obara (480-361-6339). The uniforms will be supplied by

My, how time flies when you’re having fun. November was a very busy

month for the Sun Lakes Shrine Club. Nov. 12th

started with many of the Club’s Nobility and Ladies

getting all decked out in their Tux and Formals to

spend an unbelievable evening attending the “Night

of the Child” at the El Zaribah Shrine Center. The fan-

tastic Program was devoted to showing those who

don’t know what we as Shriners do to help our Kids.

Our Nov. 14th dinner meeting was well attended

and as always the food was terrific. The evening was

spent Nominating and Electing the upcoming 2012 Club Officers. The Offi-

cers are expected to be President Dick Snyder; VP Jack Pate; Treas. Ill. Sir

Roger Nicholson and Sec. Joe Inorio.

I’m happy to report our Nov. 18th Golf Tournament at the Sun Bird Coun-

try Club was the biggest and best ever – attendance was great and every-

one had a fine time. A special thanks to Noble Don Watkins and his

committee for a job well done.

Past President Stan Thomas going to his cart at the Sun Lakes Shrine Club Golf Classic at Sun Bird Country Club

We’ve been busy and yet one wonders where the time goes. Our

yearly Christmas Dinner Dance and OV for Potentate Ill. Sir Thomas

Calvin and Lady Valerie along with the Divan is scheduled for Monday,

Dec. 12th at the Sun Lakes Country Club. The Holiday festivities start

at 5:00 with a no-host Social hour, Dinner at 6:00 pm, followed with in-

troductions, presentations and comments from the Potentate. Then

we’ll enjoy dancing to the music from Time and Time Again.

Don’t forget members can bring guests to our dinners and it’s a

good way to let prospective members experience the fun the Sun

Lakes Shrine Club has to offer. For reservations contact Tim Stock

(480-460-0708).

All the Nobles of the Sun Lakes Shrine Club wish all of you a very

fine Christmas. Through the efforts of the Shrine, we hope others less

fortunate will also enjoy their holiday.

White Mountain...

Well, the flat-landers have left the mountain and just the strong of

heart remain to face the winter snows (the

first of which hit us Nov. 5th). They say it’s

supposed to be a long, cold, wet winter.

The Club members are looking forward

to assisting the White Mountain Clothe-

A-Child Dec. 10th at K-Mart in Show Low.

They hope to clothe about 150 children

this year. It will be their 26th year of service to the White Mountain

needy children. A family in Snowflake was burned out of their house

in October and the Clothe-a-Childe Club helped out 4 children and

the parents with much needed clothing.

Club Officers for 2012 were Elected at the October meeting: Pres.

Dick Doane; 1st VP Max Long; 2nd VP Larry Logan; Sec. Jim Fugate;

Treas. Jack Wade and Chaplain Joe Couey.

Our 2012 major fund-raiser will be raffling off a sleek Shriner Go-

Kart, which was one of 8 the Club used to ride in Parades. It even has

2 speakers and a boom box. This is the last one around and has been

donated to the Club by President Emeritus Max Long. Look for raffle

tickets at upcoming Stated Meetings in Phoenix. Of course, we’ll hold

the infamous “worm races” again in 2012 beginning on Derby Day,

May 5th.

Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and successful New

Year.

the following were voted in as 2012 Offi-

cers: Pres. Richard Guinn and Lady

Jeanne Nugent; 1st VP James Robinson

and Lady Diane; 2nd VP George Krob

time; Treas. Gene Fox.

At our stated meeting Nov. 3rd chaired by Past Pres. Lanny Kee, it was

reported that 2 of our members attended the Shrine Imperial Session in

Denver. Past Pres. Jack Cox participated in

the humongous Shrine Parade riding in a

1914 Model -T Ford, once owned by our de-

ceased member George Frohlick, who’d

been active in our Parade Unit.

Noble Darrell Fischer worked as a Volun-

teer Convention Greeter directing confused

Nobles where and when, etc. His co-workers were all Past Potentates.

Noble Darrell reported a Shrine Temple Charter was granted to Emirat

Temple in Heidelberg, Germany, formed from a Shrine Club of Aahmes,

my original Temple.

Our social dinner Oct. 19th was a huge success with nearly 50 at-

tending including many from Yuma Shrine Club. No introductions were

made, however I learned several dignitaries were present, including a

Past Potentate. Noble Fischer’s cap was top heavy with the Temple pins

he received at Imperial. While there, he passed out many of our Club

Shriner Diner Unit pins to the Nobles. Some Imperial Officers had heard

of and were impressed by the donations made by our Shriner Diners Club

Unit!

Noble George Frohlick’s widow Neva was present at our social as well

as at Imperial. Lady Neva is a close friend of our new Imperial Potentate

Illustrious Sir Michael Severe and Lady Patty.

The October annual Yuma Shrine Circus was a big success. We stood

at the gate to welcome the youngsters who knew that we men with big red

hats love children. We next gathered at Center Ring with Yuma Shrine

Club Pres. Don Plank at the mic to open the event, ending with his excit-

ing ” LET THE CIRCUS BEGIN”!

It’s GRAND to be a Shriner! Joe Elleard, News writer

Greetings Nobles and Ladies. This has been a great year for Yuma

Shrine Club and its members. As I find my-

self at the end of my term as President and

scribe for the newsletter, I must say thank

you to all who helped me make this a suc-

cessful year.

I didn’t get to accomplish all I wanted to

but must leave some for the new guys! It’s

great to be a Shriner and I’m looking forward to the New Year.

Yours in the faith, Don Plank, Pres.

...Clinic News, Parade Schedule & Transportation Donations...

As 2011 draws to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank Noble

Tom and Lady Jane Sheldon and their Outreach Clinic Crew for the in-

credible dedication this past year. We completed 10 Outreach Clinics at

the Maricopa County Medical Center and the tireless efforts of all the Out-

reach Clinic Volunteers should be applauded.

El Zaribah Shriners enjoy the reputation of conducting excellent Clin-

ics. This doesn’t just happen. It takes a lot of hard work and I’ve never wor-

ried about whether our volunteers are up to the task. Their only reward is

an occasional smile on the face of a Shrine patient.

I’d also like to thank Ill. Sir Tom Calvin for giving me the opportunity to

serve as your Hospital Chairman. It’s been a very rewarding experience.

Having the opportunity to work with Lady Barbara Hineman and watching

her interaction with our patients and families has been inspirational. Make

no mistake, Lady Barbara is the foundation of your Hospital Office and

her professionalism and dedication to our cause is remarkable.

I hope many of you will take the time to thank all those who are so ac-

tive working with our Shrine Children. They definitely deserve our thanks

for a job well done. Jim Miller, PP, Hospital Chairman

Nobles of El Zaribah, the Mentorship Team of the El Zaribah Membership

Committee is looking for Nobles to serve as Mentors for Candidates referred

to us from the BeAShrinerNow.Com web site. You’ll need to register on

Shriners Village as a virtual Mentor.

We’re also looking for Nobles around the State, active in their Blue Lodges,

to help our Mentorship Team when we have a Candidate interested in a Lodge

in their area, to introduce them to the Lodge and be a helping hand to their

Mentor. This will be especially useful in outlying areas of the state where we

have Candidates.

Please contact Noble George Mather (480-254-5328) or email him at

[email protected] if you’re interested in helping in either area.

This is YOUR magazine. All Units, Shrine Clubs and associated groupsare encouraged to have articles in each issue. Here are a few easy guide-lines following the KISS principle (Keep It Short, Simple).

* Check your facts. Always be positive of your facts.* The deadline is carved in stone. Everything MUST be in our hands no

later than the end of the first week of the month prior to publication. NO EX-CEPTIONS.

* You may hand deliver, mail, fax or e-mail articles and photos to us.* If using e-mail, copy the article directly into the body of the e-mail. Send

photos as JPG attachments. If you need help with this, just call - we can walkyou through it.

* Typed copy is to use caps AND lower case. * Please limit your monthly articles to approximately 250 words. This will

ensure all Units and Clubs receive the space they deserve as well as givingour advertisers the space they’ve paid for.

* The Editor reserves the right to edit any article for length or content. Per-sonal agendas will not knowingly be printed.

* Submissions with dates will be edited for tense. If the event has alreadyoccurred, it will be rewritten to indicate past tense.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children Salt Lake City, each patient re-

ceives life-changing care for a wide variety of pediatric orthopaedic

conditions. But sometimes it’s the obstacles they overcome outside

the hospital that are truly extraordinary.

Eliza McIntosh, a patient at the hospital for 16 years, recently broke

the record for world’s longest wheelchair wheelie, setting the new stan-

dard to 12.45 miles. “There are a lot of things that go into breaking a

Guinness World Record but the one that really inspired me the most

was the outpouring of love and support from my community. In partic-

ular Shriners Hospitals for Children Salt Lake City employees Matt

Lowell and Ken Kozole helped me immensely,” Eliza said. “Without

them, my dream probably never would have happened. From the very

moment I pitched Matt and Ken the idea, they were full force behind

me, from helping me brainstorm ideas to helping me order my wheel-

chair.” The morning Eliza was set to break the record was cold and

wet, and she had to make some last minute adjustments to her game

plan, including wearing a hat, jacket and gloves, something she didn’t

have much practice with. But she hit the pavement with a positive at-

intermountain unit News...titude nonetheless.

At 8:30 am on the slippery East High School track in lane 3, Eliza

set out to break the record. Dozens of people came out to support her,

including other teens in wheelchairs, fellow students, family, friends

and even members of the fire department. Even with the obstacles in

front of her, she still beat the record with all the support and cheering

in four hours.

“I felt like I’d been training for this my whole life because I’m always

doing a wheelie,” she said after she broke the record. “I feel really ex-

hilarated that I did it and that it’s over. I’m also pretty sore.”

Eliza’s record-breaking wheelie was featured on local television

and a video clip is on KSL.com.

...Friends of the Arabian Tales...

In an effort to raise funds and awareness for The Arabian Tales,

beginning in the February, 2012 issue, we’d like to initiate one entire page for donations.

Whether the donation is for the Hospitals, Transportation Fund, $100 Million Dollar Club, etc.

it would all appear on one page.

For example:

The Arabian Tales Supporters ——- Thank you!

Friends of The Arabian Tales for this month are:

J. Hut Hutson 01/14* Gerry Massey 01/14* Fred Wulff 01/13

Donations to this fund will help offset the cost of delivering The Arabian Tales to you and others.

A $10 donation to The Arabian Tales publishes your name for one year.

Contact or visit the Shrine office for details. *Denotes a two-year donation of $20.00

When will we see YOUR NAME here?
