WHAT’S ON SHOW? ‘Pronunciation in the 21 st Century’ (Lee Engdahl, Kwandong University) Pronunciation is often neglected in language teaching although the conventional paradigm is nativism, in which students are expected to replicate precisely a standard idiolect of English. The two major avenues of effort are either in segmental or supra-segmental features of the target language, one at the level of the word and the other of the sentence. Recent research into the notion of ELF suggest that intelligibility may be more useful as a pedagogical direction than nativism. The position of this presentation is that intelligibility may be more fruitful but that one must be aware of the political and cultural aspects of language teaching. ‘How to Teach Vocabulary – A Beginner’s Guide’ (Tim Dalby, Korea University) In this practical workshop we will discuss eleven different ways to elicit vocabulary from students, what students need in order to ‘know’ a word, how to help students store vocabulary and some methods to help retention. We will also cover some lexical jargon for those that are interested. ‘Making Your Students the Experts’ (Alex Grevett, Jinbu High School) Often as teachers, and especially foreign teachers, we want to share our own culture and knowledge with our students. While this is helpful, we can sometimes forget the huge amount that our students can teach us. This workshop demonstrates the results of my research into the effect of making students the experts, communication strategies that help to draw out our students ideas, and some practical lesson ideas for you to use in your classroom KOTESOL GANGWON CHAPTER MEETING Proudly supported by KDU's Department of English Education 12-4pm, Saturday, December 10, 2011 Kwandong University, Gangneung ADMISSION: FREE!
