UPCOMING TRIPS
Expression of Interest – Birdsville Track Easter Holidays 2011 I am thinking about doing a 17 day trip over the Easter School Holidays in 2011, leaving April 9th returning back by on or Anzac day. My intention is to do this with a Camper Trailer. I would like to know if there are any people interested in doing the Birdsville trip – and I would also like to hear from people who have done the trip in recent times to find out about track conditions and suitability of doing the trip with camper trailers. Also would like thoughts as for good places to stop/see along the way. My plans were to get to the start of the Birdsville track over 2 days, and then doing about 250/300 km’s per day (or less), depending on track conditions and amount of sightseeing stops we make reroute. Once we get to Birdsville, drop the trailers somewhere and have a go at Big Red. Then head along the Birdsville Developmental track into Roma district before turning south and coming home via the blacktop over a couple of days. Please contact me via email [email protected], or by phone 0417 747 860, or at home on 9702 0288. Regards, David Bruinsma

VICTORIA RALLY at Lardner Park
Three of the committee members met at the BP Longwarry at 7pm on the Friday night and after a bit of chinwag we headed off to Lardner Park to try to find Luke. Detouring around a bad accident on the main intersection to Lardner Park with about half of Victoria’s police units from the whole of Gippsland in attendance, we got to Lardner Park ourselves without any incident. We found Luke and his caravan just before the rains came down, so we took cover in his van until the storm front passed through. About 10pm we had a bit of a wonder around and found where we were to set up the next morning. Dan used a spare bunk in the Van, and Bruce and I decided it was not worth setting up our tents in the dark in the rain – so we elected to try to sleep in our respective vehicles for the night. Probably not the best of idea’s to be honest. Neither of us got any good sleep because of the rain. But it was an experience. Bright and early the Rally cars started coming into the grounds from wherever they had disappears to the night before, so I woke up at about 7am – rubbed the sleep out of my eyes and started to straighten the stuff up in the car so I could drive it to the allotted set up area. By a fluke, Dan had also woken up and parked his car about 20 seconds before I got there. Dan and I quickly set up a Marquee that I’d borrowed and set up a table – so we were set under a dry area for the day. I then walked back to wake up Bruce who was still sound asleep. I had to wake him up, as his car was about to get parked in by a about 2 dozen cars. (Sorry Bruce). A little later on, Colin Armour also joined us for the day. We were spectators all morning, watching the cars commence there line up sequence right in front of us before going through the first check in point, then heading off to do what they were supposed to do and coming back approx 2 hours later. I must confess that there were NOT a lot of spectators at all – because of the small turn out to the event, we were not really able to promote the club as we hoped we might, but it was an interesting day seeing how a rally is staged. We did not get to ‘see’ any of the rally as it was held in the local state forest I believe.
Just after 1pm, in a decent break in the weather, we packed everything up whilst it was mostly dry. Bruce and I left about 1:30 in
the arvo, whilst Dan and Colin stayed longer. I found out more than a week later that due to the afternoon rally being cancelled,
they brought forward the late afternoon Rally around the dam at Lardner Park, so Dan and Colin got to witness some of that ...
well, that’s life I guess.

WET TOOLANGI TRIP – SATURDAY OF CUP WEEKEND Prelude: After a trip earlier in the year run by Anthony VB, Antz put me onto a Forum for Navaras, www.navara.asia , which I joined as a member – and have now met a couple of the people from there and recently did a 4x4 trip with one of the members. There is a lot of friendly rivalry between the D22 and D40 owners, and I had fun this particular day getting one up on a D22 owner, by making sure he got well and truly stuck, and then using my D40 to get him out. At the end of this submission, I’ll give you the link where you can read the original web posts and you will also be able to watch a couple of short videos. One of the videos is 5 minutes, shows the D22 getting bogged, and the D40 getting him out ...
On October 30th, I managed to catch up with a friend from the NAVARA FORUM Scotty Bobcat, together with our wife's and 1 kid each ...
It started out as a glorious day (where was that rain that was supposed to be around). We met at Healesville and commenced our day at 9am from the local Tourist centre, with Scott and I getting the local Rooftops map for the area. I'm not going to bore you with all the trips specifics and which tracks we went on - but I'll give you an indication only. We took off for Toolangi initially, but not on the main road - Scott new of some dirt roads to the west of the main road, so that’s the initial route we took. All of the side tracks that Scotty wanted to show me where closed, so it did not take too long to get to Toolangi. Went to the local pub and got fresh coffees for the adults, and toilet stop for the kids. (oh, and some of the adults too). Took off in a south east direction and did not take long for Scott to find that was going to test us (wet and slippery) - but this time we were safe doing it on 4 wheels, instead of his previous attempt at 2 wheels. (Scott had been up this track on a motorbike and stacked the bike, and now has permanent back injury)
Well, a very nice track indeed. Had some steep sections. Had some wet sections. Had some boggy sections. Scott managed to get his high powered D22 stuck a couple of times. He had to winch himself out of trouble the first time. I had the wonderful privilege to drag him out the second time (go the D40's ... lol) The 2nd bog hole. We found a nice hole that i walked beside pushing a stick into the water to see how deep it was. For the most part it looked pretty good. Until the end at least. The water probably went about 3’ deep, and the stick did not really push into hard stuff ... so I let the trip leader (Scott) go first and he buried the bull bar under the water. He had a mud bank on the drivers side and could not get out. So I had to do all the work of setting up the recover gear and get set to pull him out backwards – all while the wife’s took photos and video of the whole procedure. The kids thought it was just fantastic with the dads playing in the mud.

Here are some piccy's that my wife took. Scott upfront leading the way this is him stuck the first time ...
We got to the top of the track, and decided to head back down and have picnic lunch at the bottom of the track - the dirty cars: Scotty:
