LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, I am appreciative of your interest in the parish’s plans to purchase a portable ultra-sound for the mobile van for Caring for Love Ministries. The actual second collection will be this weekend. Envelopes were placed in church last week for this purpose. We are attempting to raise at least $3,500 toward the purchase price of $25,000. We already have $10,000 and once we have the $3,500, the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council will provide for the remainder. This initiative is a partnership with Caring for Love Ministries, The Knights of Columbus and our parish. Please help us reach our goal this weekend. The Advent season seems to have a long-build up to Christmas, with 4 full weeks of Advent. This is our last week, with the focus of the Advent Scriptures definitely turned now toward the Nativity. If possible, get caught up in the Spirit of the season through the daily scriptures. Let these stories of longing speak of your own longings for peace, for clarity, for forgiveness, for love. You may have heard that recently there was some video filming on campus. It was for a DVD being prepared about the upcoming Capital Campaign. I am in the process, along with Campaign leadership, of organizing this effort for the coming year. Stay tuned for more information. I hope you will join me at St. Jean for the Christmas celebrations. There is a special Christmas Concert prior to the Midnight Mass on Saturday evening, beginning at 11:30pm in Church. There will be lots of music at all the Christmas Masses for which I am very grateful to our parish musicians and singers, under the direction of Mrs. Karen Ullo. I look forward to seeing you and yours at Christmas. Blessings of Advent until then. Love,

MOVING? CHANGE OF ADDRESS? If you are moving out of the parish or have a change of address and wish to remain in the parish, PLEASE NOTIFY THE PARISH OFFICE. Every week, envelopes are returned to us and the parish has to pay the postage due. It can get quite costly. The post office will not forward envelopes to a new address even if you have filled out a mail forwarding form. If you let us know your plans soon enough, your envelope service can continue uninterrupted.

The Five Giving Principles In the coming weeks, as part of our ongoing Total Stewardship program, we will discuss the significance of the

Ministry of Finance. Five elements of spiritual giving—the Five Giving Principles—help us remain a Church “renewed in the Spirit.” The five established principles include the following: Giving is planned. Giving is proportionate. Giving is sacrificial. Giving is a free expression, and giving is an act of prayer.

A REFLECTION ON THIS WEEK’S YES, LORD! God chose to announce the promised Savior to a young woman in a backwater village called Naz-areth. In a small painting created over a thousand years ago, the artist shows the angel holding up one hand in greeting. Mary is standing facing him with her hands extended in welcome. The words of the angel are rich in power and promise: “you have found favor with God . . . [your child] will be called Son of the Most High . . . The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will over-shadow you” (Luke 1:30, 32, 35). Pure of heart and trusting completely, Mary answered God with a wholehearted “yes.” Through her cooperation, God broke into our world, breathing the same air we breathe, experiencing our sorrows and joys. God became flesh in the Son, Jesus Christ, born of Mary. The world would never be the same. The time is here to let him into our hearts and change us completely. Will meet December 24th at 3:00 PM for a bell choir rehearsal at the church. Children in 1st grade and up are invited to play. The Christmas concert is at 3:30 PM.

Together Baton Rouge, Making a Difference Our parish has been an active participant in the Together Baton Rouge grassroots organization of churches and institutions for the past two years. The TBR organization has grown in membership and in the number of issues it is addressing in our city. This month St. George and St. Paul the Apostle Catholic churches also joined TBR. Parishioners of SJV who serve on our TBR Target Group are active in all of the TBR Research Action Teams addressing the issues of Crime, Health, Food Access, Public Education, and Public Transit. Recently, we participated in the TBR action to clean-up the Gilbert Memorial Cemetery, one of Baton Rouge’s historical cemeteries. And, the opening of the Blue Grass Bridge will take place on November 19th, the first issue that TBR successfully addressed earlier this year. TBR is making significant strides in addressing the public transportation issue our city faces relative to lack of funds to run an adequate transit system. We will be offering more information on this particular issue in the near future as it affects our community. If you have an interest in any of the above mentioned issues, please contact one of our parish’s TBR Target Group members, Vicki Dauterive, 756.4796, or Mike Barrios, 751.7120.
