STEWARDSHIP 2019Stewardship Packets have been distributed. Included in yourpacket is a letter from Scott Overcarsh of our Stewardship Council,a budget summary, and a Worship+3 Booklet to help you engagein the mission and ministries of Decatur Presbyterian Church with

your time and talents, as well as financially. There are extra packets available at the church–look for the greenreturn envelopes.

For 2019, the Councils of the Session have proposed a budget of over $1.3 million for the support of DPC’svital missions and ministries. This represents an increase of only 2% over the 2018 budget. However, in orderto avoid special ‘beyond the budget’ campaigns, regular pledges will need to increase 11.6%. Please considera generous increase in your 2019 commitment.

The ministries of Decatur Presbyterian Church are made possible by the grace of God working through thefaithful response of many individuals and families to the Financial Stewardship Campaign. In order to the meetthe critical budget needs for the coming year, we implore all of our congregation members to respondgenerously and provide written commitments in support of our shared mission.

WORSHIP+3At Decatur Presbyterian Church we encourage ALL participants in our community to worship regularly

PLUS…1) Discover a ministry that enables you to learn and grow in faith, 2) Give some measure of time in a ministry, either through or beyond the Church, that serves others and

feeds your passion, and3) Support financially the mission we share.

Have you remembered DPC in your will?

Evangelism–Everyone–EverywhereEvangelism at DPC is all of us, the whole congregation, working together to Share God’s Love. This can be unchartedterritory for many and a little intimidating How do weproclaim the good news? How about some tips, small thingswe can all do to spread the good news. This week we look atBilly Graham’s elegant, but simple approach to Sharing God’sLove. Like Paul, the Evangelist, Billy had a very basic ‘elevatorspeech’ approach to delivering his message discussed below.

Sharing God’s Love: Billy Graham, Keeping it SimpleBilly Graham, who passed this year, was one of the greatestevangelists of all time, preaching to millions. He, in a similarmanner to Paul, had a very simple message that he oftenbroke into four easy-to-grasp steps:

1. Step 1: God Loves Youa. The Bible says, “God so loved the world that He

gave His one and only Son, [Jesus Christ], thatwhoever believes in Him shall not perish, but haveeternal life” (John 3:16).

b. Jesus said, “I came that they may have life andhave it abundantly” — a complete life full ofpurpose (John 10:10).

2. Step 2: But there is a problem: We are sinful andseparated from God

3. Step 3: The Good News is that God sent his son to diein our place and have relationship with Goda. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the

life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me”(John 14:6).

4. Step 4: Jesus knows you and loves you. You canchoose to receive God’s forgiveness

If you are familiar with Billy Graham, you will know that manyof his sermons ended with this simple prayer:

"Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for yourforgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is Your Son. I believethat He died for my sin and that you raised Him to life. Iwant to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to doyour will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen."

The take away from this week’s tip is copy Billy and Paul andkeep it simple when discussing the gospels and engaging withfriends and neighbors.

‘Bells of Peace’ to Ring on November 11The Bells of Peace program marks the centennial of thesigning of the Armistice that ended the fighting in WWI. Presbyterian churches with bell towers are being requestedto ring their bells as Bells of Peace on Sunday, November 11,2018. The Armistice was signed one hundred years ago atthe 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, and thechurch bells tolled on November 11, 1918. We intend tohonor that moment of peace and help the bells toll onceagain on November 11 this year. DPC is participating, ringingthe bells at the start of worship–at 10:30 am.

As background information, the U.S. World War OneCentennial Commemoration Commission has issued anational proclamation for bells to ring throughout our nationon November 11. The program is for bells to toll across ournation of five time zones to commemorate the centennial ofthe armistice that ended hostilities in WWI, to remember thesacrifices of the 4.7 million Americans who served in theGreat War, and to honor the role the U.S military has playedin preserving peace and liberty around the world for the last100 years.

Presbyterian Disaster AssistanceDo not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, Iwill help you. (Isaiah 41:10)

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is offering immediateaid to the communities impacted by Hurricane Michael. Thisjoins responses already underway for those impacted byHurricane Florence, Typhoon Mangkhut, and otherinternational disasters that have suffered a lack of mediacoverage.

Hurricane Michael struck the Florida panhandle withdevastating winds and storm surge, causing loss of life. Thestorm then cut a path across the southeast, moving throughthe same areas impacted by Hurricane Florence just a fewweeks ago.

PDA is deploying teams to affected presbyteries. Emergencyaid, assistance in the development of a short-term responseplan, as well as a ministry of presence will be the priorities ofthe initial response.

Will you stand in the "GAP" (Give/Act/Pray) to help thesurvivors of these terrible storms?

Give: Hurricanes Michael and Florence and TyphoonMangkhut have caused extensive damage and loss of life. Some of you have already given generously in previousweeks. While the needs can feel overwhelming, continuedprayer and giving will ensure that the whole church is able torespond. Gifts to DR000194 support our response tohurricanes and typhoons. Gifts can be made online, by phoneat (800) 872-3283, or by check, which can be mailed toPresbyterian Church (U.S.A.), P.O. Box 643700, Pittsburgh, PA15264-3700.

Act: Learn how you can help families who have losteverything in the devastation.

Pray: As this hurricane and typhoon season continues tocause destruction and loss of life, please pray with us that thecommunities affected by these events and those offeringassistance will be strengthened, have their needs met and bereminded of the hope found in God.0
