Fukuoka Area Taxi Fares to be RaisedThe Kyushu District Transport Bureau decided to authorize an increase in taxi fares in the Fukuoka metropolitan area in mid-November. The maximum for the initial fare covering the first 1.6 kilometers will rise from the current 590 yen to either 640 or 650 yen. The add-on fares would also rise. This will be the first increase in local taxi fares since April 1997, a period of more than 10 years.

Poor Earthquake ProofingThe Fire and Disaster Management Agency completed its survey of earthquake-proofing at municipal buildings for 2006. The survey found that 59.6% of these buildings nationwide have anti-earthquake measures of some kind. With the exception of Oita Prefecture, with a ratio of 60.1%, the rest of the Kyushu prefectures and Yamaguchi Prefecture are below the national average. Of these prefectures, the figures range from 58.1% for Miyazaki Prefecture to 45.4% for Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Miyazaki City First to Levy Community TaxMiyazaki City Mayor Shigemitsu Tsumura revealed that starting next fiscal year, the city will be the first in the country to incorporate the new, provisionally named community tax that will be a source of funds for local governments to use in regional activities. The funds are expected to be used for crime prevention, social services, and other activities that municipalit ies have found diff iculty handling in the past. Miyazaki City now has 160,000 taxpayers, and it is expected the tax will amount to 500 yen per person.

Strait Area Film Festival Slated For SagaAn association of eight prefecture-level governors in Japan and South Korea whose jurisdictions border the Tsushima Strait will hold the Japan-South Korea Strait Area Film Festival in autumn 2008 in Saga Prefecture. The subject of the movies in the festival will depict life in the region. If the festival is a success, the organizers plan to make it an annual event with the site alternating among them. They also plan to establish an executive committee to encourage joint Japanese-Korean filmmaking and provide production assistance.

HTB Use a Segway to Tour Huis ten BoschT h e S a s e b o r e s o r t H u i s t e n B o s c h announced it has introduced the use of Segway scooters for sightseeing tours of the park. The Segway tours will be conducted from November 1 to December 2. The use of the vehicles will be limited to people 18 years of age or older who are guests at the resort hotel. Huis ten Bosch has been devoting greater attention to eco-tourism of late.

Die Technology Course OfferedWith die demand expected to grow due to the increasing concentration of the auto industry in Kyushu, the Kyushu Institute of Technology will offer a digital engineering course focusing on die technology at the graduate-level in April next year. They will be the first university in Kyushu to offer such a course, and one of the first in Japan. It is hoped that these highly trained graduates will boost the skill level at local die manufacturers.

427 Average Kyushu Wedding Costs 4.27mAccording to a survey on wedding trends released by Recruit, the average wedding in Kyushu in 2006 cost 4.27 million yen, with expenses for honeymoons and other ceremonies included in the calculations. This is an increase of 200,000 yen from the previous year. Kyushu ranked sixth nationwide out of 15 regions. The trend toward more expensive clothing, food, and photography is expected to continue.

, Fukuoka Int. School Certified as BaccalauratThe Swiss Foundation, Organisation du Baccalaurat International, has certified the Fukuoka International School as a baccalaurat school. This certification means that graduates of the school are qualified to take the entrance examinations of universities in most of the world's countries. The school's student body consists of the children of foreigners living and working in the Fukuoka area. Fukuoka now has the educational infrastructure to permit those people employed by overseas corporations to bring their famil ies to the area when assigned there by their employers. The Fukuoka International School is the 13th school in Japan to receive such certification, and the first in Kyushu.

Smoking Ban in Fukuoka Area TaxisT h e F u k u o k a C i t y M u n i c i p a l T a x i Association reports they have settled on a policy of prohibiting smoking in all taxicabs in the Fukuoka metropolitan area by next February or March. There are roughly 6,800 taxicabs on the streets in the region. The association said it was their obligation under the law to strive to prevent second-hand smoke in public transportation facilities, as well as the trend of the times. They added that they hoped smokers would understand their position.

Alliance Fights Metabolic SyndromeThe municipal government-affiliated Fukuoka Health Promotion Foundation has teamed up with Kyushu University and the Tokyo-based International Medical Center of Japan to conduct research into metabolic syndrome in Fukuoka City. Their efforts were prompted by the many obese men in the city with this condition. They plan to begin elucidating the genetic and lifestyle connections with the syndrome next January to discover methods to prevent its occurrence.

KIT and JARI Auto Development AgreementThe Kyushu Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Japan Auto Research Institute (JARI) have signed a comprehensive agreement to promote joint research for automobile development and to exchange personnel. It is the first agreement JARI has signed with a university. The two have previously worked together on joint research into automobile safety sensors using image processing technology, but the new agreement will extend research to such fields as energy, the environment, and vehicle engineering.

JR 24% 24% Decline for JR Kyushu EarningsJR Kyushu released its interim report for the current fiscal year, which showed that despite a second consecutive year of record revenue at 143.1 billion yen, a 19.3% year-on-year increase, current profit fell 8.5% to 12.241 billion yen due to the construction work on the new Hakata Station building and other factors. This was the first current profit decline in four years. As a result, net profit dropped 24.1% to 6.113 billion yen.

Regional Banks Buying Best Denki StockConsumer electronics mass merchandiser Best Denki of Fukuoka City asked regional banks and other investors from April through August to buy its stock as a protection against corporate raiders. Several companies agreed to their request and bought Best Denki stock to become "stable shareholders." According to informed sources, several of these were such regional banks as its main bank, Nishinippon City Bank, and the Fukuoka Bank.

Best Denki to Open Franchises in VietnamFukuoka City-based consumer electronics mass merchandiser Best Denki announced they would form a joint venture with a Vietnamese company next January to open two franchise sales outlets in the country. The retail stores would be operated by the joint venture company. Best Denki also will second employees to its Vietnamese partner to provide business expertise.

5 3 Shopping Arcades Permit Use of E-MoneyFive Nagasaki City shopping arcades that are members of a commercial federation in the city have announced that retail outlets in their arcades and about 300 surrounding shops will allow the use of three forms of e-money by the end of next January. The e-money to be accepted as tender will be iD, a post-purchase system, the pre-paid card Edy, and Ginren, a system designed for use by Chinese tourists. In all three instances, it is the largest use of e-money by any shopping arcade in the country.

IC 09 Fukuoka Subway to be MicrochippedThe Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau revealed that the Fukuoka Municipal Subway will begin use of microchip-embedded tickets on all lines in 2009. The tickets will be similar to the Suica tickets introduced by JR East and increasingly used by buses and railroads throughout the country. Riders will deposit funds into

a special account in advance and swipe the tickets as they pass through the gate. The fares will be automatically calculated and subtracted from the account.

Fukuoka City and Busan Work TogetherF u k u o k a C i t y r e v e a l e d i t w i l l b e conducting the provisionally named Asia Gateway Campaign 2011 with the city of Busan in South Korea to promote synergy in tourism to the two countries. The Kyushu Shinkansen will fully open in 2011, as will the Korean high-speed rail transport system KTX, with service between Seoul and Busan. In addition to tourists from each other's country, the two cities hope to attract visitors from China and Southeast Asia.
