December 2010

Chairman’s MessageJames K. Densmore, 2010 Chamber ChairmanParkland International Realty

My time as your Chamber Chairman has come to an end; a good one, yet the end to a tremendous year. As they say, it is great to go out with a bang. No better way than to do so than by announcing some great, new additions to our Trustee programs. Best Cleaners and Florida Hospital join the distinguished Community Trustees and June Engineering and SeaWorld Orlando join our Supporting Trustees.

As is the tradition at this time of year, I gladly extend my thanks to the board members who served with me. These exceptional people lived up to the expectations for all board members, including attendance at monthly very, early morning meetings. Special thanks to those retiring from our board; Samir Burshan of PrismOne, Scott Michael of Strombeck Consulting CPA’s, Kitty Phillips of Disney, Star Krashinsky formerly of CenturyLink and now with Florida Virtual Schools, Lynetta Steed with Regions Bank, and two past Chairs, Julie Kleffel of BankFIRST and Dr. Diane Trees with UCF. The hours amassed by these board members and those remaining on the board, extend into the hundreds.

The newest members to the board will do no less than their best. They will be great additions to Michael Waldrop’s board, my successor and your 2011 Chairman. A resounding welcome to Keith Bradford of Disney, Lisa Willis with CenturyLink, Tim Haberkamp of Hardee’s, Lauren Parrish of BankFIRST, Felicia Lewis with Regions Bank, and John Marzano of Orlando Health. For a full listing of the 2011 Board of Directors, please see page 2.

Our board members are exceptional, yet we have even more champions. These are the committee chairmen; those that are tasked with keeping the Chamber on purpose and delivering services and programs to you. We couldn’t do it without each of you. Thank you to the dedicated people involved with our Small Business Development Team and Networking Groups: Heather Weidenbruch – Oerther Foods/McDonalds, Jon White – White Gate Realty, Linda Rovetto – Florida Lakes Title & Closing, Linda Osterberg – Mortgage Solutions of CF, and DJ Stephens; Membership Committee: Scott Michael – Strombeck Consulting CPA’s, Terry Fay – Fay Financial, Janelle Resnck – BB & T and Debbie Sonntag – MasterPay; Economic Development: Paul Sexton – HREC; Governmental Affairs: Michael Waldrop – Blue-Cord Design & Construction; Education: Chesta Hembrooke – S.T.A.R.S. of West Orange and Rob Maphis – James A. Cummings Construction; Ambassadors: Jaclyn Whiddon – The Whiddon Group; and Susan Fortini – FastSigns.on the Pine Hills Redevelopment Task Force.

By the time you read this article, I will be past-Chairman. I retire as Chairman with no regrets and with joy in my heart. This Chamber has been wonderful to me and my business. I have established long-lasting business relationships and more importantly, friendships. I hope you get out of the Chamber, as much, if not more than I.

The Chamber Team is keeping an eye out on local issues so that we may keep you informed on issues of local and regional importance. Here is what we kept an eye on in December:

Pine Hills Business Redevelopment Task Force Update by Susan FortiniAt the Board of County Commissioners hearing on December 7th, the board unanimously approved support of the Task Force recommendations. The recommendations include determining what “entity” (CRA, Neighborhood Improvement District, etc..) will be set up to execute this recommendation and several others. Determining a funding source for this entity was also discussed and included in the approval. Some of the recommended actions to be considered for future implementation are developing a mixed use Town Center and attractive and functional corridors and establishing effective mult-modal connections and creating and sustainable strong neighborhoods..

The next step is for Orange County staff to report back to the board in April with a recommended entity and funding source.

Horizon West Retrospective/Developers Forum – Paul Sexton and Stina D’Uva attended this meeting hosted by Orange County government Commissioner Scott Boyd was in attendance. The purpose of the forum was to discuss the issues that impact continued development in Horizon West and its Town Center. Some of the issues discussed are the current inventory of residential units, road and infrastructure connectivity, the need for a global road agreement, school sizing, lack of funding for small park sites and the Specifi c Area Plan (SAP) amendment process. Future forums will be held.

Northwest Regional Board of Advisors (NWRBA) – Stina D’Uva and members attended a joint meeting of all the boards at SeaWorld Ports of Call to discuss the regional water issue and global competitiveness. Shelley Lauten, the Executive Director of myregion.org also discussed a new initiative which she will oversee, “Let’s Get to Work.”

West Orange Airport Authority (WOAA) – Stina D’Uva attended the meeting and learned that the Feasibility Study funded by the city of Apopka was not yet approved by FDOT. The WOAA Board was also still waiting for St. Johns River Water Management District (SJRWMD) to review the study for its comments and input. Both actions must occur before the consulting company, CDI, may complete the Site Selection Plan Study. Initial indications are that property south of Jones Rd and in between two existing airports is a possible good site. During the Feasibility Study, the area north of Lake Apopka was described as an area of interest for this General Aviation Airport. Once approvals and review are completed, the Site Selection Plan Study will be completed and the next step will be to go to the FAA to request the 95% funding. There is no deadline for this submission. The next meeting of the WOAA Board will be on Wed., 12/15 at 10:00am at Apopka City Hall.

Keeping An Eye on the Issues

Advocacy and the West Orange Chamber

The West Orange Chamber of Commerce advocates on behalf of Chamber members and the business community at large in West Orange County and the surrounding region. The primary goal of all of the Chamber’s advocacy activities is to improve West Orange’s business climate. We endeavor to build a stronger local and regional economy and ensure that business is at the table in the process of making public policy decisions. We believe we should take a leadership role on all issues that directly affect the business community in West Orange County.

Any Chamber member in good standing can bring an issue for consideration. The standard process for getting the West Orange Chamber of Commerce endorsement and/or support on an issue starts with the Chamber’s Governmental Affairs (GA) committee which meets the second Monday of every month. The committee will hear a request and submit a recommendation to the Executive Committee which can make a decision as to whether and how to pursue specifi c issues. Then the Executive Committee will engage the full Board in the decision.

In December, the Chamber’s GA committee will begin work on the 2011 Legislative Position Paper. The focus is to affect legislation that will improve the business community in West Orange County. Once completed, this document is disseminated to all State Legislators in Tallahassee. For more information on the Chamber’s role of Advocacy or GA committee, please contact Stina D’Uva or Krista Carter at the Chamber offi ce.

Wishing you a safe and happy Holdiay season from

The West Orange Chamber Team!Stina, Krista, Vicki, Lauren, Carrie and Dorcas
