Volume 13, Issue 1 Friday, February 9, 2018 Dear School Family, Welcome to 2018 and a very special welcome to all the new families that are joining us this year. It has been an exciting start to the year, with many events already taking place. Our Swimming Carnival was held in Week 1 with a fantastic community atmosphere. Many thanks to the Parents and Friends for providing the BBQ for students on the day. Our Year 7 Meet the Care Group Teacher evening was also held in Week 1, which was a great opportunity for parents to connect with Care Group teachers and other families. An opportunity to meet with Care Group teachers of Year 8 to 12 students is coming up in Week 4 (Tuesday February 20). Term 1 is very busy in the life of the School. This week, students in Years 8 and 10 have been away on their respective camps. Highlights from the camps will be included in the next newsletter. Open Evening is always a wonderful celebration of our school, and I encourage you to save the date, Thursday March 22. Starting a new school year can be very daunting, especially for students who are new to the School. However, it can also be exciting to start the year afresh with renewed enthusiasm and motivation. Students are encouraged to start the year off being well-organised and making a study schedule to keep up with the demands of high school, especially for our senior students. Start assignments early to avoid stress later in the term, when work might be due for a number of subjects. Congratulations to Dianne Vo, our Dux for 2017 achieving an ATAR of 97.25. It was a pleasure to have Dianne come and speak at our Week 2 Chapel to encourage the students in their school journey. Dianne was able to give some insight into the strengths and challenges she found throughout school and especially Year 12. Dianne will be studying a Bachelor of Health and Medical Science at the University of Adelaide. We wish her and all of our graduates the very best, as they move into this next stage of life. We don’t always hear about what opportunities our students were offered at TAFE, or other training organisations. We’d love to hear from students who were offered positions in courses that are not listed in this newsletter. Message from Mr Rijken: Our term scripture comes from Romans 5:1-5. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.” The high school years go very quickly and I would really encourage all students to involve themselves in the many activities that are happening in the life of the school. Our school motto is ‘Pursuing excellence for the glory of God.’ The emphasis is on the pursuing. It is about trying to do our best in all endeavours. MERIT CEREMONY GOVERNMENT HOUSE It was my pleasure to attend the SACE Merit Ceremony at Government House. Brittany May achieved a Merit in General Mathematics, which is an exceptional effort. Mr Rijken and Mr Hudson also attended the ceremony, and we were able to join in celebration with three Mile End students who achieved Merits last year: Tyler Whittaker achieved a Merit in Physics, Grace Bleby achieved a Merit in Modern History, Gerard Brandt achieved a Merit in the Research Project. On Friday of Week 1, we took the whole school to the Salisbury Swimming Pool for our annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival. We
were blessed with great weather throughout the day again. It was a great day of fun and competition, including some very creative
costumes and energetic team songs. Each year we seem to get more elaborate and enthusiastic team chants! This year, Mrs
Buckoke had the tough job of deciding the winner of best dressed as well as best team chant for some bonus points.
Throughout the day we had a lot of close races, with many of the age champions only being decided by a couple of points. This
year’s age champions were:
We also saw the following records broken this year:
U14’s Girls Backstroke – Liana Sklenar – 47.32s
U16’s Boys Freestyle – Ethan Crook – 27.36s
U16’s Boys Backstroke – Ethan Crook – 33.22s
U16’s Boys Breastroke – Ethan Crook – 38.49s
West was once again dominant, winning the Swimming Carnival for the fifth year in a row. The points for the day are as follows:
West – 434
North – 307
South – 306
East – 177
Congratulations to all who participated, we had 82 students swimming in at least one race.

This is a reminder that the school has chosen to become a "Nut Aware" school.
This awareness has been implemented because there is an increased number of students at our school who have
severe peanut/nut allergies. These students cannot be exposed to nuts in ANY form,
as this will trigger an anaphylactic reaction - that is a reaction requiring an immediate
injection of adrenalin, ambulance attendance and hospitalization.
This has very serious consequences for our students and in their best interests, we
ask that care is taken with all peanut/nuts and food containing nuts within the school.
The Canteen/Home Ec. has also undertaken the change. The school acknowledges
that due to food processing practices, it is impractical to eliminate nuts or nut products
entirely from an environment where there is food. Thus "Nut Aware" School.
NUT AWARENESS
PARENTS AND FRIENDS As parents, a vibrant school community is important to us. Being
involved in the Parents and Friends group not only gives us the
opportunity to be actively engaged in supporting events and initiatives,
but provides a wonderful avenue through which to get to know and work
alongside other parents. Together we make a difference in the life of the
school.
If you would like to join us, an invitation is extended to all interested
parents and friends to join us at any of the Parents and Friends meetings
held through the year.
If you have any questions, agenda items or suggestions for the Parents
