1 THE URSULINE ACADEMY ILFORD A Catholic Academy for Girls Weekly News – Issue 4 2 nd October 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians Headteacher’s Headlines… As you will know the number of COVID cases in London indeed in Redbridge has been rising over the last week and the area is on the Government watch list. We have been maintaining our Year group bubbles and keeping the situation under close scrutiny. There was one positive case in Year 10 this week, the student had not been in school for a number of days and we were able to track her contacts in school, friends and girls she may have sat near in class, and these students were asked to self-isolate as a precaution. There have been no more cases among staff although some were still self-isolating having been a contact of a colleague or family member. It looks like this will be the way things are for the next few months but please be assured that we act on information as soon as it is received. Exit times have now been staggered further with Years 7 and 8 leaving at 3.10, Years 9 and 10 at 3.20 and Year 11 at 3.30 from Monday. The gate is open from 8am in the morning so there is a 40 minute window for girls to arrive so we have not needed to change the start time. We have also suspended Year group assemblies for the time being but tutors have been asked to hold class assemblies and morning prayer. From Monday we are strongly advising girls and staff to wear a face covering in corridors and communal areas with a view to making this compulsory if numbers continue to rise. This is still not required in classrooms at present. All of this is of course subject to review. On pages 15 – 22 are the Edmodo/Padlet codes for each Year group, this is to enable staff to set and mark remotely were a class or year group asked to self-isolate. In the event of this, online work will be supplemented with some live sessions for students. The online platforms are also being used by some staff to set and mark homework. Please print off and keep these codes for easy reference. Please do not send your daughter into school if she is feeling unwell and if your daughter has a COVID test she must self-isolate until the test result is received and is negative. Please keep the school informed of any developments while your daughter is off, including family members who have tested positive. On a brighter note, we have now uploaded our promotional video onto the school website at www.uai.org.uk. This was produced because of course we are unable to host our usual Open Evening for new entrants 2021. We also have adverts in local Parish newsletters and the Ilford Recorder. Recruitment could be more difficult this year with the pandemic so please share our story and recommend us to friends and family if you feel able.

Stemettes Explore - Join us this half-term for 3 weeks of sessions exploring STEM careers,
advice and opportunities. We’ll be bringing together young women, nonbinary young
people and folks from across the STEM industry, for networking, inspiration and learning.
Hosted on Instagram Live and Microsoft Teams. Who are Stemettes and what do they do? Stemettes is an award-winning social enterprise working across the UK & Ireland and beyond to inspire and
support young women into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths careers; (known collectively as
They have a vision to support all girls to make informed decisions about careers and to inspire them into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields, by showing them the diversity of people already in STEM via a series of cohort programmes, impactful events and inspirational content platforms. This drive by Stemettes is also aimed at helping to eventually improve the proportional representation of females in the field of STEM to at least 30%+ of the UK's STEM workforce, as opposed to the current 21%. During Lockdown, we sign-posted KS3 students (through our DT tasks) and in the school’s Newsletter to sign up for events. This was very well received and so we were hoping to share this with the wider school. It may be of interest to share with Girls that through Stemettes, some of our previous students have used the experience to help invest in their STEM futures, with some currently studying or working in STEM related fields and they have continued to share in the success of this environment.
