Dear Parents/Carers,
Our recruitment season continues and last week we made 2 appointments.
Ms Mayotte will be joining the Science team from Monday 13th April. She attended the University of
Ottawa, Canada in 2014 and graduated with a BSc in Science (Major in Chemistry). She is an experienced
teacher of GCSE and A' level and will be working with the team to prepare for the triple science (Biology,
Chemistry and Physics) GCSE curriculum in September.
Ms Jinah is our new Senior Science Technician with over 20 years’ experience from the independent and
state school sector. She qualified from York University as a co-leader in Science and has spent the past 5
years training teachers and technicians to deliver A’ level and GCSE practical lessons in Biology, Chemistry
and Physics. She will commence her post in September 2015.
On our 2 INSET days our teachers and LSAs were training in all subjects to prepare for the new GCSE
specifications. All subject departments spent one day visiting schools in the independent and state sector
to observe Key Stage 4 (Year 10 & 11) and Key Stage 5 (Year 12 & 13) lessons.
Next half term our Class of 2019 will be receiving careers support to help them independently prepare for
their GCSE preferences after the Easter holidays. It is an exciting time for the pupils and staff to make this
next step into studying their GCSE curriculum. We will be hosting our first GCSE subject evening on
Wednesday 4th March at 6pm but in the meantime if parents/carers have any queries about the
process for the Class of 2019 please do not hesitate to contact Vice Principal Mr Speight
[email protected] .
On Friday 13th March we will host our first non-uniform day in support of the national Red Nose day.
Pupils and staff can wear whatever they would like to school in order to raise money for the appeal. Please
ensure your child has paid their £1 to wear no uniform in advance of the day on Wise Pay via our website.
Our parents will also be raising money at our second Parent Quiz Night on Friday 13th March. Parents and
teachers will be battling it out for the Parent Council Trophy. Last year the honour was won by the
parents team ‘Between the Commons’ who will be setting the quiz this year. Tickets are selling fast with
only 30 tickets remaining, please purchase yours on Wisepay via our website.
Our next music event will be our show casing our incredible scholars and apprentices on Monday 23rd
March (6-7pm). Unlike previous years, parents, friends and family will need to purchase their tickets in
advance via WisPay on our website www.arkbolingbrokeacademy.org
Have a wonderful half term break and I look forward to seeing many of you on Friday 13th March at the
Quiz.

Monday 16th February 2015
Bolingbroke’s Got Talent 2015 was a terrific way to end this half term.
Eleven acts battled their way through the audition rounds to appear on
the final stage on Tuesday 10th February. The evening was hosted by
Louis Jenkin and Isaac Garapi, Bolingbroke’s very own Ant and Dec.
The talent acts performed as the audience held their breath through a
variety of performances, from a free style gymnastics routine to an
elegant ballet show to the heavy sounds of our rock band who
launched the show. Please see the next issue for a full write up.

SUMMER EIGHTS TRIP
By Ms Donaldson
I am incredibly excited to be able to offer pupils a trip
Oxford University to visit St Peter’s College and to watch
the Summer Eights racing. This trip will take place on
Friday 29th May, 2015.
St Peter’s College is one of Oxford’s youngest and friendli-
est colleges, situated right in the heart of the city centre.
Summer Eights is the main intercollegiate racing event in
the Oxford rowing calendar, and consists of four days of
‘bumps’ racing. Crews race in single file, with the intention
of catching up with and ‘bumping’ the boat in front before
the chasing boat can catch your crew. It’s an exciting event
for spectators – with boats literally aiming to crash into one
another, there is sure to be high drama on the water!
We will meet at Bolingbroke Academy at 9am and travel via train to Victoria and
the ‘Oxford Tube’ Coach to Oxford High Street. After a wander through the
sights of the city centre, we will eat in the Hall of St Peter’s College before head-
ing down towards the river. We will have the opportunity to meet current stu-
dents and to cheer on our chosen teams. Pupils will arrive back at school at ap-
proximately 6:30pm.
This trip is open to any pupil in Year 9 who has either taken part in Bolingbroke’s rowing programme through
Duke of Edinburgh Taster Sessions, or who anticipates that they may be interested in applying to Oxford in the
future.
Lunch is being provided by St Peter’s College and so pupils will only need to pay a contribution for transport.
The final amount is to be confirmed, but it is anticipated to be no more than £10.
Letters have been sent home and pupils need to return their slips by Monday 23rd February to reserve one of
the few remaining places on the trip. Please e-mail [email protected] if your child does
not have a letter.

GOLF DUKE OF EDINBURUGH
By Mr Speight
This year has seen another addition to the academy’s sporting enrichment and Duke of Edinburgh programmes in
the shape of golf, in collaboration with the Central London Golf Club. 18 Year 9 pupils were selected to be the
first Bolingbroke golf group and along with their counterparts in the Thursday evening enrichment club received
coaching in the basics of golf, including sessions with PGA professionals. Over the first term and a half of the year,
pupils learned -
The basic skills of golf: how to hold a club and how to play a putt, chip, pitch and full-swing shot with a
variety of golf clubs.
The principles of hole and course design: the features of a golf hole, hazards and obstacles, the par system
and how to score
Etiquette and safe play
The ideas behind ‘street golf’, where the skills and challenges of the game can be recreated in an urban
environment
Sessions took place on site, on Wandsworth Common and culminated with a really enjoyable and successful visit
to CLGC, where pupils received further professional coaching and had the opportunity to test their skills in the
club’s driving range.
Golf will remain on the Duke of Edinburgh programme for the second cycle for Year 8 and will continue as a
Thursday evening enrichment club. Even if you have not registered for the club, prospective new members are
always welcome to come down on Thursday evenings and give golf a go!
Pupils take their shot with the hope of becoming the
next Rory Mcllroy!

MUSIC AT BOLINGBROKE ACADEMY
ARK'S SING INTO SPRING
By Ms Kirby Ashmore
On Friday the Bolingbroke Choir and Senior Choir headed over to Stratford Circus to join hundreds of other
pupils from ARK Schools across the UK. Together we rehearsed many different kinds of pieces (Folk music, pop,
gospel and an African song), culminating in a final performance in Stratford Town Hall. Once again, Bolingbroke
stood out as the school that sang so confidently and well. The sound we all made together was incredible, and
we’re all looking forward to going again next year.
THE STUDIO
We are excited to say that staff have received training on our fantastic new studio. We can't wait to start
recording some music and sharing it with you all.

OXFORD UNIVERSITY
FRENCH FILM COMPETITION
BY Ms Sherman
The MFL Department are delighted to announce that we will be taking part in the Oxford University French film
competition.
The Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages at Oxford University is looking for budding film enthusiasts in
Years 7-11 to embrace the world of French cinema.
To enter the competition, pupils are asked to re-write the ending of a film in no more than 1500 words. Pupils
can work in English or French. No additional credit will be given for writing in French and incorrect French gram-
matical expression will not be penalised: this is an exercise in creativity, rather than language!
We will be screening “Le Petit Nicolas” at 4pm (until 5pm) on Wednesday 25th February in M.02.
Criteria:
The judges are looking for plausible yet imaginative new endings. There are no restrictions as to the form the
entry might take: screen-play, play-script, prose and prose with illustrations.
This year there is separate competition for filmed entries (Youtube etc). For the filmed entry competition, group
entries are acceptable.
Prizes:
A first prize of £100 will be awarded to the winning pupil, with runner-up prizes of £25.
A first prize of £100 will be awarded to the winning student(s) in the filmed entry category (which spans both age
groups), with a runner-up prize of £25.
Only 15 entries can be submitted by the Academy but as we are running this as a House Competition also, there
will be the chance to win lots of points for your house. The film has subtitles so you do not need to worry if you
do not study French!
The deadline for entries for the house competition is Wednesday 4th March.

the appropriate clothing and accessories. Pupils MUST wear a helmet
and have lights. If they continue to not have these items we should warn
you that they will not be able to store their bikes on site.

YEAR 9 PUPILS TAKE A TRIP TO SEE SHAKESPEARE’S ‘OTHELLO’
Thursday 29th January, the Lyric Hammersmith
By Ms Nobes
On the 29th of January, twenty lucky Year 9 pupils had the opportunity to see
Frantic Assembly’s modern take on Shakespeare’s ‘Othello.’ This
modern and innovative production, staged at the Lyric Hammersmith, gave
the pupils an opportunity to see an original interpretation of the text, ahead
of the whole year studying it for the rest of the spring term.
Initially, the departure from the classic setting of Shakespeare’s text felt
jarring but the audience was soon drawn into the story through the clever
use of physical theatre. The classic tale was twisted into a tale of warring
gangs, based in and around a Northern pub. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the
production, commenting particularly on the clever use of staging; the
concertinaed walls demonstrating the psychological state of the characters
was a particular highlight. They also expressed great delight of the almost
cartoonish blood and violence, certainly a memorable factor in this particular
production. This adaptation undoubtedly gave pupils an excellent grounding
with which to approach the text and opened their minds to the relevance of
the themes in our modern society.
Additional thanks must be extended to parent volunteer Emma Smith who accompanied Ms Nobes and the group
on this outing. Thank you for helping make the trip such a success.

VISITS BOLINGBROKE ACADEMY
Reminder: Year 8 pupils, if you still have to pay for the copy of The Dogs you had signed, please get your parents
to log onto Wisepay and pay as soon as possible.
Allan visited Bolingbroke on Thursday 5th February during
his 4 day visit to the UK to launch his new book ‘The
Dogs’.
A number of year 8 and 9 pupils were lucky to meet Allan,
listen to him read the first chapter of the book which was
released on the 5th and ask him questions about his past
books, the writing process and his inspiration for "The
Dogs". Thank you to Andersen Press for bringing Allan to
our school.
The Dogs is a haunting supernatural thriller that will keep
you gripped to the very last page. There are copies availa-
ble to borrow in the library.

AFTERNOON TEA
Served by Community Project DofE On Friday 31st January the Community Project group had a delightful tea party
with the Nightingale Care Home. The afternoon included lovely homemade
cakes made by the pupils. They had Victoria Sponge (Ms Edis' favourite),
chocolate brownies, Red Velvet cake and Hobnob flapjacks.. We were also very
lucky to have the Music Scholars join us. They played some amazing songs for the
elderly. Some guests were so enthusiast they started to dance!
Milly Dakin from Year 7 described how the afternoon unfolded:
We finished our lesson four and went straight to Ms Widdowson's classroom.
Ms Sherman was there, she helped us make some name tags and told us about
our guests. Next we went down to the Commons where Ms Widdowson had
already started to set up.
Belere and I had the job of holding the doors open. Soon everyone started to arrive. There was one man who
started to dance with me whilst I was holding the door open! Next Belere and I went to the table and started
talking to some people on it. They asked us lots of questions and it was nice to tell them about the school.
After about half an hour Ms Widdowson let us all have a piece of cake. There was music playing in the
background and our guests enjoyed listening to it.
An enjoyable afternoon was had by all!

THINKING ABOUT YOUR FUTURE
With www.fasttomato.com
Last week all Year 9 pupils were introduced to the Fast Tomato online careers programme. They completed a
questionnaire which helps them to think about their strengths and what career they may enjoy in the future.
There are a number of questionnaires to complete and half term will be a good opportunity to do this, they will
have access to this online profile during their time at Bolingbroke Academy and we hope that parents and pupils
will be able to spend some time looking at the career options together. All year 9 pupils have been issued with a
username and password, if they have already lost this then please email [email protected]
for a reminder.

SPRING IS HERE!
By Ms Robinson
Help Bolingbroke Academy gain a collection of green fingers.
We will be starting a new gardening enrichment and D of E activity after half term and we need your help.
A group of pupils will be taking over the raised beds at the front of the academy to grow herbs, healthy salad
leaves, edible flowers and other exciting things. We will also be making bird feeders and bee boxes as part of this
activity.
We have been given some excellent advice and support from one of our parents Emma Lyne, The London
Gardener. www.thelondongardener.co.uk
We are now looking for some equipment to help us out, so please have a look in your gardens sheds for anything
you can spare. We are particularly looking for gloves (child sized and adult), hand tools and large planters to
allow us to separate things like mint from the bigger beds, watering cans with rose head, lollipop sticks for labels,
netting to protect our seeds and a reusable garden bag for waste.
If you would like to join us on Friday afternoons or can help in any way please let me
know [email protected]

BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT - YEAR 7 & 8
By Mr Fernandez
Bolingbroke's Year 7/8 Basketball Team had their first
fixture on Tuesday 3rd February, playing a Basketball
tournament held at Southfields Academy. This was a
great opportunity for them to start playing their
favourite sport in a real situation with referees and
competitive spirit. Mr Fernandez’s team demonstrated
every possible value associated with Being Bold in this
tournament. We played the first two matches against
Southfields and Ernest Bevin. Both teams are very
experienced which pushed our team to make a huge
effort, not only in defence but also in attack.
After losing these two games, The Bolingbroke Basketball team showed great courage in achieving the
victory against Ark Putney. A very close match where Joshua ORLEBAR showed great vision assisting Milo
ROTHFUSS-MOORE to get the first two points of the game. Max BUTCHER and Milo ROTHFUSS-MOORE
used their speed to penetrate into the opponents' lines, creating lots of occasions to score for everyone,
they were helped by the powerful Yahya MIAH who got a lot of rebounds creating uncountable second
chances for Bolingbroke’s team.
This was a great first day of Basketball for Bolingbroke where
our players learned about the game in a real scenario. At the
end of the competition we ended in the 4th position but Mr
Fernandez’s took a very positive view of the teams first
performance especially as this was the very first competition
for our young players. Very well done to all involved.
Seriously nervous before the match
Pleased with themselves after their first
match.

NEW SPONSORS
The pupils, parents/carers of Bolingbroke Academy would like to thank John Thorogood, our sponsor for
the last two years, for their generosity. Thanks to their donations, we have raised nearly £15,000 which will
enable the school to fund a number of projects, primarily the minibus. This year John Thorogood will spon-
sor a local primary school and we wish them well.
We would like to welcome our new sponsor for 2015: Rochford Stokes on Lavender Hill. Like John Tho-
rogood, Rochford Stokes are one of the few local independent estate agents in the area. One of the two
owners is a Bolingbroke Academy Dad, so we look forward to their
support and to working with them in raising more funds in 2015!
Rochford Stokes will also give back to the school 20% of their fee whenever a parent/carer/friend of Boling-
broke Academy chooses their agency to sell or rent their property.
