the incredible students, famil ies a n d t e a m m e m b e r s

w h o are at the heart of the daily life of The L e a r n i n g

C o m m u n i t y.

The t imes w e are in cha l lenge all of u s to give deeply

of ourselves to c o m e t h ro u g h o n our pro mis e to our

chi ldren, particularly chi ldren of color a n d chi ldren in

lo w - inco me co m m u n i t i e s — t h at they have the quality of

educat io n they are so undeniab ly des er v ing of receiving.

This year, with your help, w e d id just that, a n d w e

g ra d u ate d our first cohort f ro m our E n g l i s h as a S e c o n d

L a n g u a g e certif ication course.

systems to rapidly re s p o n d to threats a n d also to proactively

inform statewide pol icy a n d pract ice with considerat ion of our

i m m i g r a n t c o m m u n i t y m e m b e rs .

Middle g ra d e r s s p e a k out! After t he Pa r k l a n d shoot ing , our

6th, 7th a n d 8 t h graders felt c o m p e l l e d to look into local g u n

legis lat ion and, as a result, advocated for the p a s s a g e of bill

#H7891, p re s e nt i n g their rationale to legislators a n d local leaders

in front of Central Falls City Hall.

A n d s p o ke o u t aga in! They also joined their peers f r o m other

districts in a respectful protest at t he State House.

districts o n the state standard ized test. We ach ieved this result

even as R h o d e Is land is re co g n i ze d as h av i n g t he m o s t s ign i f icant

a c h i e v e m e n t g a p in t he country, a c c o rd i n g to t he A n n i e E. C a s ey

W h a t is it l ike to b e a st u d en t h ere at T h e L e a r n i n g C o m m u n i t y ? W h a t wo u l d yo u say are s o m e of t h e t h i n g s that h ave b e e n consistent over t i m e here?

Yo u c a n c o m m u n i c a t e with teachers, they really care. They he lp you with your school work a n d in your life. E a c h student is g iven the opportuni ty to have a great educat io n a n d c o m m u n i c a t e with everyone. Yo u b e c o m e like family, create b o n d s here that he lps t h ro u g h o u t your years here.

The teachers always e n co u ra ge k ids to g e t work d o n e a n d ke e p go ing . They also explain w hy you will n e e d this in yourlife a n d with your career. The L e a r n i n g C o m m u n i t y h a s b e e n consistent with lett ing s tudents k n o w educat io n is very impo rtant w hether you g o to col lege or not.

W h a t are your d r e a m s for t h e future?

I want to b e a pho to grapher or pediatrician.I loved w h e n I was at L C to g o read to the K indergar ten class The L e a r n i n gC o m m u n i t y always e n c o u ra g e d m e to look at m y go a l s a n d stay focused, w h e n I felt like g i v i n g u p or procrast inat ing teachers always kept m e fo cused a n d did not letm e give up. Yo u c a n c o m m u n i c a t e withteachers, they really care. They help youwith your school work a n d in your life.

W h a t wo u l d yo u say to s o m e o n e w h o w a n t s to k n o w ab o u t T h e L e a r n i n g C o m m u n i t y ?

My m o m attends conferences, parent cafes a n d s he is g iven the c h a n c e to m e e t everyone a n d as k quest ions a n d talk to teachers. S h e co uld co ntact the school at any t i m e for anything. I h a d a s ib l ing w h o g ra d u ate d a n d a s ibl ing w h o is n o w in 5th g ra d e so I still g e t invited!

We h a d a c h a n c e to focus o n i m m i g rat i o n in 7th g ra d e a n d s hared our stories of w h at our famil ies went through. Visitors c a m e in to hear our stories a n d hear ing u s m a d e a difference s ince the visitors were impo rtant peo ple a n d they heard w h at w e h a d to say.

Are there any p eo p l e or ex p er i en c es that h ave i nf l u en c ed yo u here?

O n e of m y teachers in 8th g ra d e h e l p e d a lot a n d gave m e great advice. H e always kept m e o n track a n d t a u g h t m e it was impo rtant to work hard for m y future.H e always s aw the potential in m e a n d reassured m e a n d m a d e it clear w hy the work w e were d o i n g is important. H e was not just a teacher, b u t also a fr iend – h e was m y strongest influence.
