December 2011 Dear friends, If there is one word that sums up the past year for the Arts Council of Princeton, it is collaboration. We saw significant growth in community-wide collaborations this year, including the formation of new partnership programs for teens and for older adults. This past year we celebrated the completion of our year-long “Community Portrait” project and began the community-wide collaboration “Memory and the Work of Art.” We also led 23 arts organizations in the economic impact study, “Arts and Economic Prosperity.” It was, without a doubt, the Arts Council’s leadership in community arts programming and arts education that led to the New Jersey State Council on the Arts’ Citation of Excellence for the third consecutive year, as well as a Governor’s Award for Excellence in Arts Educa- tion. Our successes this past year did not happen by accident. It was truly a team effort by the ACP’s dedicated Board of Trustees, the hardest working staff in nonprofit arts, an army of volunteers, and over 2,000 active members and donors. A planning process that started last October resulted in a new Strategic Plan that was adopted by our Board in June. And, a new business model allowed us to complete the fiscal year “in the black” for the second year in a row, allowing us to begin replenishing our cash reserve fund. Adding significantly to the positive bottom line was our Arts Education program, which reported an impressive 17% increase in tuition revenue. Of course, the ACP faces challenges, and our biggest is the retirement of our mortgage. Earlier this year we launched a “Burn the Mortgage” campaign with a goal to raise $2 million. As we go to press with this Annual Report, we are a little less than half way to our goal. It is our hope that the successes of our programs and operations will provide the inspiration to our supporters who will recognize the incredible potential the ACP has to expand the reach of our services – if we can eliminate the monthly burden of our mortgage payments. We hope you enjoy this report – we certainly enjoyed looking back over the past year as we imagine the future. We thank all of you who have contributed your time, talent and funds to the success of the Arts Council of Princeton. You are the fuel that drives us in our efforts to achieve our ambitious mission of “building community through the arts.” Kind regards, Timothy M. Dear friends,If there is one word that sums up the past year for the Arts Council of Princeton, it is collaboration. We saw significant growth in community-wide collaborations this year, including the formation of new partnership programs for teens and for older adults. Our successes this past year did not happen by accident. COMMUNIVERSITY Festival of the Arts, Spring 2011

The sun shone on Communiversity yet again, and record crowds (estimated at over 40,000) flocked to Nassau and Witherspoon Streets to enjoy great music, food, and general merriment (right). Students from the Westminster Choir College delighted crowds with an artfully choreographed “flash mob” dance in the middle of Nassau Street (above).

FUNDRAISING EVENTS The Arts Council of Princeton holds two annual fundraising events, Dining by Design in the fall and Pinot to Picasso in the spring. This past year’s Dining by Design, held on October 23, 2010, hosted approximately 300 people and netted $73,383 for Community Outreach programs that benefit at-risk youth and seniors. Over 500 people attended Pinot to Picasso on April 29th, 2011 (above). The event raised $65,800 for the Anne Reeves Artist-in-Residence Program and Community Arts Initiatives.

ACP fundraising events reflect the creativity and commitment of volunteers from our Circle of Friends, trustees and staff. (Shown from left to right) Trustee Cindi Venizelos, ACP Director of Community Relations Jeniah “Kookie” Johnson, and Dining by Design event chair Dina Riad.

COLLABORATION AND NETWORKINGThis past year the ACP continued its leadership in commu-nity collaborations with the Princeton Area Arts and Culture Consortium, by hosting monthly meetings of the Princeton Youth Concerns Committee, and by partnering with numerous nonprofit, educational and community organizations on a wide range of programs and projects. A significant collaborative effort, the Arts & Economic Prosperity (AEP) study, (pictured at right) includes 23 Princeton arts and cultural organizations in a year-long national study which is being compiled by Americans for the Arts. The Arts Council of Princeton serves as the lead coordinator for the regional survey, the results of which will be published in June 2012. The ACP also realized significant improvements to its network-ing and internet communications through website, e-commerce and email improvements, and social networking through FaceBook and Twitter.www.artscouncilofprinceton.org

SENIORS & CAREGIVERS

Last year, the Arts Council utilized a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts to deliver weekly arts programming to seniors at Buckingham Place and Stonebridge of Montgomery. At the same time, a 2010 grant from the Church & Dwight Employee Giving Fund enabled the Arts Council to offer free weekly classes to family and professional caregivers in its downtown facility, The Paul Robeson Center for the Arts. The class, led by artist and ACP instructor Eva Mantell (above) was designed to put simple, replicable art techniques and projects into the hands of caregivers.

COMMUNITY PORTRAIT PROJECTDuring 2010 – 2011, the Arts Council of Princeton examined the many ways in which we see ourselves and one other through a series of projects coordinated under the banner Community Portrait Project. The Annual Members exhibition and the Between You and Me exhibition in memory of Bruce Berenson both had portrait themes. Several classes were offered that emphasized portraiture in various media and instructors in the outreach programs used portraits as a jumping off point for their curriculum.

Strategic Plan 2011–2016In October 2010, the Arts Council of Princeton’s Board and Staff came together to address the

challenge of making our organization more effective in delivering arts education, presentation and community programs while stabilizing and growing our operations. From October 2010 through May 2011, the visioning process was driven by a board task force, and informed by staff planning

sessions and input from artists, instructors, students and the general public. The Arts Council’s five-year strategic plan presents the results of this visioning process. Our plan both

honors the Arts Council’s distinguished history and imagines its future. It builds on what we know, and asks us to deepen and intensify our practices. It demands that we advance to a constant stateof innovation. The plan shapes our core values into a new model for community arts programming

for the 21st century—one that ensures continuing excellence, relevance and impact for decades to come. Please look on our website, on the WHO WE ARE page, to see the Strategic Plan 2011-2016 in its entirety.
