What is DEAFinitely Stepping Ahead?

DEAFinitely Stepping Ahead is a programme specifically designed for D/deaf1 or hearing-impaired students in their last year or two of school who are thinking about further education, training or looking for their first job.

Its aim is to help you be sure that your next steps are the right ones, by checking you:

• knowalltheservicesavailabletoyouandknow how to access them;

• canquicklyandeasilyorganiseNZSLinterpreters and people who can work with you;

• caneasilyaccessDeafAwarenessresources;

• havestrategiesforeffectivecommunicationand are clear about what steps you need to take;

• canaccessspecificD/deaf-relatedequipment(new hearing aids, alarm clocks etc)

so you can be confident, independent and successful in stepping out into the world!

language as their first language. Spelt with a small ‘d’, ‘deaf’isusedasanadjectivetodescribehearingloss.

has been developed by a team of D/deaf

people at Deaf Aotearoa New Zealand who once had to make the same decisions that you do.

It contains all the things we wished we

knew before we began our further education,

training and jobs as D/deaf people!

Wearedifferent!Weuseoureyestoget allourinformation,andsohaveadifferentway of looking at the world from other people! It’s not better. It’s not worse. It’sjustdifferent,becausewecandoeverythingbuthear-sowhenweworkorstudywehavedifferentwaysofdoingthings.Weusedifferentwaystomakesurewe can access the information we need and to check that we can do things.

We don’t always do it the same way as other people, but we can do it! We can getgreatjobsandhaveagreateducation.With confidence, knowledge and the right resources, nothing can stop us!

DEAFinitely Stepping Ahead is designed toensureyouhavethetoolstofully ACCESS the programme you decide to do and so ensure you are just as able to succeedaseverybodyelse!

It’s FREE! It’savailableinNZSL,EnglishandMa-ori, andovertimeitwillgoonline.

If you want other people to work with you, they are welcome to be part of it as well.

What’sinvolved?

DEAFinitely Stepping Ahead is a programme built by you, for you.

You get to say how it can be of most use

to you. You can base it around any concerns you have about what

you want to do.

It covers any problems or issues you expect to

face, and you can choose the kind of information

you need.

The programme can run from 3-12 months, depending on your choice of

content, so there’s plenty of time for you, your family, whanau and school to

complete each stage.

We team you up with someone you can easily communicate with from Deaf

AotearoaNewZealand.Theywillthenworkwith you to try and look at those issues

and concerns, and organise the things you need to make sure you are as confident as

possible by the time you start.

Once you are enrolled, we go over everything you can choose from and agree on the best options to suit what you want to explore

we help you to get the ball rolling andworkwithyouuntileverything you need is in place.

Yesitcertainlyis!Youwillworkwithsomeone who you can communicate easily with and you will pick and choose theactivitiesthatsuityou!You’llalso meetotherswhohaveasimilarhearingloss as you.

How will you match me with one of your staffmembers?

We will focus on getting the best communication-flow happening. IfyouuseNZSL,youwillworkwithsomeone using sign language.

If you use only spoken language, you will work with someone you can talk to easily.

If you use both sign and spoken language, we can match you with someone who will do the same.

Ihaveliteracyissues,canIstilldo the programme?

Yes,definitely!

IamMa-ori, do you know anything about working with people who are D/deaf andMa-ori ?

We certainly do, we can connect you with otherpeoplewhoarealsoMa-ori and D/deaf.Weknowyouhavetwoequallyimportant identities both as a D/deaf person andasaMa-ori person so we can contact otherslikeyoutomakesureyouhaveawhanau approach to looking at your future.

CanIstilldotheprogrammeifIamover 21 or under 16 years of age?

DEAFinitely Stepping Ahead is especially designed for people aged 16-22. If you are older or younger than this, talk to us because there may be other ways we can work with you. We want to see you succeed!

Can I bring my Deaf friend?

inallareasoftheirlivesincludinghelpingpeopleaccessinformationandservices, offerDeafAwarenesstraining,facilitateongoingacademicresearchandprovide a resource for local and national government.Wealsolobbyforbetter accesstoopportunitiesandservicesonbehalfofNewZealand’sD/deafcommunities and encourage D/deaf NewZealanderstogoforopportunities tobettertheirlivesandchasetheirdreams.

Asagroup,D/deafKiwishaveanadvantageinthatmanyofusdon’tviewourselvesas‘disabled’and99%arejustaswillingandabletogetonwithittoimproveour qualityoflife,thesameashearing NewZealanders.InthewordsofI.KingJordan: ‘Deaf can do anything but hear’.
