DIRECTOR

Mike Lewis Executive Director

THANK YOU again, to our many volunteers; we cannot thank you enough. For those unfamiliar with what goes on in our Nashville warehouse, when we need help packing 1,500 family food boxes so 300 can be sent with each shipment of supplies, we have an automated phone system that calls approximately 90 church congregations in the area and over 900 individuals to tell volunteers we need their help. DEADLY TORNADOES WITH 170 MPH WINDS STRIKE

SOUTHEASTERN STATES Twenty-three lives lost in EF4 tornadoes

“Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of

Christ.” - Paul advises the Galatians

(continued from the desk of the Executive Director)

Normally, with a two day notice, 200-250 volunteers will come to our

warehouse to help. If the latest disaster were a larger scale, such as a hurricane that hits multiple states, or some major disaster that is getting a lot of air time on television and radio news, we will have a line of volunteers waiting outside to get in to help. CCDRE is blessed with a large number of volunteers in this area and surrounding counties who care about others, and want to help those who are hurting, and this is one way they can help. These volunteers man both sides of 300 ft of conveyor rollers that go through part of the warehouse, and pack 1,500 family food boxes exactly alike, in about 1 ½ hours. Each family food box weighs about 60 lbs. There are two other groups on whom we are very dependent. Most Mondays and on some Thursdays (if they are available) a group of 5-7 women come to the warehouse about 8:00 A.M. and work until noon.

These women pack important boxes we send on our supply trucks such as personal care boxes, and our infant care boxes. Lastly, but certainly not least, →

our volunteer truck drivers! These men drop what they are doing in many cases, and come to the warehouse as quickly as they can. In some cases they will be pulling away from

the warehouse in less than 2 hours. THANK YOU SO MUCH! In addition to what has already been reported, additional heavy rains across Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota caused the winter snow and ice to start melting, raising the rivers above flood stage in many areas in Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds estimated the recent flooding reached at least $3 billion in damage. The President approved Ms. Reynolds’ request for disaster relief in 57 counties. Heavy flooding took place around Omaha, Nebraska and shipments of supplies were requested by the Bellevue church, the Nebraska City church, and the Fremont church so they could help those flooded in those areas. Human lives were lost, but many farmers’ lives depended on farms in these areas for their livelihood. Eight years ago in 2011 the flooding was also bad, and many invested every penny they had to make their farms productive again. Now, eight years later, their farms are wiped out again. One predicted that 50% of the farmers will not recover from this flood. One farm lost 700 hogs. →

The water rose so fast that the family barely had time to get out. We thank you for your continued prayers for those affected by these disasters and for this work. We thank you for your support so that we might always be ready to send supplies to turn over to the leadership of a local church of Christ so the Lord’s church can help others in need.

JUSTICE FOR “JUST DORCAS”

Gratitude and apology are due our friend, Dorcas Curry. In the January 2019 Newsletter we failed to give credit to Dorcas Curry for writing the interesting article on page 4 titled “INDISPENSABLE TRUCK DRIVERS” The story was told to Sister Curry by Bro. Thomas Gill, Jr., both members at Schrader Lane Church of Christ in Nashville, and she wrote the article for us to put in our Newsletter. We thank her for the fine article and apologize for this omission. Sister Curry is an author, and writes under the pseudonym ‘JustDorcas.’

CAUTION!

The Associated Press reports an estimated 6,227 pedestrians were killed on U.S. roads last year, a 4% increase from 2017, and the highest number in 28 years. Analysts say the increase is partly due to Americans shifting from passenger cars to SUVs, and partly because more drivers and pedestrians are distracted by cell-phones. The Automobile Association of America (AAA) also warns drivers about using cell phones while driving. Eighty-five percent of drivers are distracted by their phones, which is only one source of the distractions that cause nearly 4,000 crashes every day. Texting while driving takes your eyes off the road an average of 4.6 seconds, and at 45mph, you traveled the length of a football field without looking up! Wait until you can pull over safely to answer, call or text on your phone.

COASTAL OFFICIALS FOCUS ON RISING OCEANS & EXTREME WEATHER State officials along the East and Gulf Coasts have pushed for projects valued at billions of dollars to protect populous coastal regions from rising oceans and extreme weather. In Maine, leaders are seeking a public vote on a $50 million bond to fund a steel waterfront infrastructure to protect against rising sea levels. Florida’s Governor proposed investing $2.5 billion to protect the Everglades and the appointment of a chief science officer to address environmental concerns. Louisiana’s Governor pledged $55 million in state surplus and about $300 million in offshore oil revenue for coastal and levee improvements. In Massachusetts, where a tidal surge in 2018 pushed the water level at Boston Harbor to the highest ever recorded, the Governor proposed raising taxes to generate more than $1 billion over the next decade. About a third of the U.S. population lived in coastline counties along the Atlantic or Pacific oceans or the Gulf of Mexico in 2016 according to the Census Bureau. Major weather events cost more than $306 billion in 2017, breaking previous records, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. - Adapted from a WSJ article by Jennifer Levitz, Cameron McWhirter, Valeris Bauerlein

Trucks rolling across the nation aiding disaster survivors

Editorial DON’T LET YOUR PAST DICTATE YOUR FUTURE “Get up and go…” Paul was on his way to Damascus looking for men and women who believed in Jesus so he could take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. It was common knowledge in Damascus that Paul had severely harmed the believers in Jerusalem. Jesus knew that Paul had gone from synagogue to synagogue and beat those who believed` believed in Jesus. Jesus knew that Paul stood had stood and watched as faithful Stephen was Stephen was stoned to death, even held the clothes of the executors. If awards HAD had been given to those who did the MOST most harm to the church, Paul would have gotten first prize. Jesus appeared to be oblivious to all of this as He recognized the zeal, dedication and steadfastness of one whom He chose to take the gospel to the Gentiles. As steadfast as Paul was in his con- victions it was going to take a momentous act on Jesus’ part to get Paul’s attention. Thus the miraculous vision on the road to Damascus when Jesus knocked Paul to the ground, blinded him and told him, “Get up and go into the city and it will be told you what you must do.” Jesus didn’t tell Paul he would have to go back and correct all the sins he had committed, He just said, “Get up and go…” Many of us today succumb to the superficial pleasures and direction of the natural man and may have to be knocked down before recognizing we have the heavenly Father Who loves us and has a purpose for each of us. Some past sins we might be able to correct, but for firm, true, genuine stalwart believers in Jesus Christ, John, son of Zebedee, tells us “if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin.” Based on His grace and our faith, the blood of Jesus cleanses us from past, present and future sins. It is our responsibility to “get up and go” and tell others about our wonderful Savior, what He has done for us – and them.
