Dear Parents and Carers, In May we celebrate Our Blessed Lady, Mary mother of Jesus. The Catholic pracƟce of assigning a special devoƟon to each month goes back to the early 16th century. Since the best known of those devoƟons is probably the dedicaƟon of May as the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary, it might come as a surprise that it wasn't unƟl the late 18th century that this devoƟon arose among Jesuits in Rome. In the early years of the 19th century, it quickly spread throughout the Western Church, and, by the Ɵme of Pope Pius IX's declaraƟon of the dogma of the Immaculate ConcepƟon in 1854, it had become universal. May crownings and other special events in May in honour of Mary, such as public recitaƟon of the rosary, stem from this Ɵme. Sadly, such communal events are rare today, but we can take the month of May as an opportunity to renew our own devoƟon to the Mother of God by dusƟng off our rosaries and adding a few more Marian prayers to our daily rouƟne. In school we are encouraging students to use the prayers of the rosary either individually or in groups and have opened the chapel at breaks and lunchƟmes for students to make their own devoƟons to Our Blessed Mary. This prayer is also commonly said at the end of the rosary, in morning prayers, and during the prayers at the end of a Low Mass in the TradiƟonal LaƟn Mass. HAIL HOLY QUEEN Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! Our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and aŌer this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. On Sunday 7th May students from De La Salle met Bishop Alan as they joined with over 800 young people in the Rite of acceptance for ConfirmaƟon. This year 800 young people across Essex and the east end of London will receive the sacrament of confirmaƟon at Pentecost weekend which falls on 4th June 2017. Please keep our young people and all those preparing for the sacrament of confirmaƟon in your prayers. Thank you to all the catechists, parents and sponsors who have supported them on their journey. We wish you all a very Blessed Pentecost. Chapel Now open for Prayer and Reflec on
A few addi ons have been made to the Chapel, to help make this a more comfortable and reflec ve space for everyone. The Chapel will be open every break and lunch for anyone to spend some me reflect, if they wish. Some classes have experienced a me of Medita on in the chapel, making good use of the new bean bags and cushions. Guided Medita on is wonderful form of prayer which involves relaxing the body and focusing on a piece of scripture. Miss Warren ‐ School Chaplain

Bletchley Park
Ms Patel and I decided that Bletchley Park would offer our departments the chance to extend the learning opportuni es of those students who have been iden fied as gi ed, talented or able within our subjects. Bletchley Park has a rich history, featuring prominently in the allied victory during the Second World War. This is something that has recently been recognised in Benedict Cumberbatch’s ‘The Imita on Game’. Alan Turing and his team contributed to the war me success by cracking the Germans’ famous Enigma code, something they did with mathema cs. Therefore our trip was aimed at extending their historical context and prac cal maths skills. Our day began with an early start of 07:30. We made good me to Milton Keynes, which was built beside and a er the Bletchley Mansion. We started our day with a tour of their museum, which exhibits some of the features of
Bletchley’s history. We then divided into two groups to explore the grounds. My group began with a display of Turing and Gordan Welchman’s famous Bombe machine which was used to decode the original enigma messages. The talk, while fascina ng, was also very mathema cal (for a history teacher at least) and involved rather more simultaneous equa ons than I cared to remember!
A er we examined some of the ‘huts’ where staff, mainly young women, of Bletchley Park worked with the vital documents they had received. Here the students were able to put their own code‐breaking skills into prac ce. We then had a tour of the en re grounds and mansion. Though slightly chilly, we enjoyed seeing the various sights of Bletchley: the room where the staff were made sign to the Official Secrets Act; the garage containing the motorcycles that the swi dispatch riders used and the mansion that gives Bletchley its name.
Our me in Bletchley ended with a workshop, where our students had the opportunity to put their newly acquired skills to the test. They had to decipher a message that had been sent in Morse Code, then decrypt it using the Enigma codes we had been given, and then translate it from German to English before using it to plot coordinates on a map. I was slightly dazed having listened to the instruc ons! As two groups found to
their cost, a single mistake with the Enigma machine meant star ng from the very beginning again. As we worked through this, we began to get a feel for the sheer enormity and intricacy of the work the people of Bletchley Park managed.

Having finished in Bletchley Park, the students were rewarded with two hours shopping in ‘The Centre’ and everyone had a well‐deserved rest before we went home. As is our trend on trips, the students excelled themselves and did our school proud, by their behaviour, decorum and manners. Thanks to Miss Reilly, Miss Kilbane, and Mrs Abbot for helping on this trip. Mr Boylan—Teacher of History

The PE Department
“Remember qui ers never win and winners never quit” Senior District Athle cs On Wednesday 3rd May, Year 10 and 11 had their District Athle cs at the Spor ng Village. The senior athletes set off to the first major compe on of the Athle cs season. Compe on is always tough, especially against the larger schools; Woodlands, Mayflower and Billericay. Students were aiming to get into the final and finish within the first 8, as these posi ons score points for the school. The De La Salle athletes did the school extremely proud and there were so many outstanding performances. There were green vests in most finals and students were finishing in high places. Highlights of the a ernoon were:
Abiemwense Igiewe‐Oghogho blitzing the 100m race and winning for the 5th year running. The girls relay team leaving the other schools for dust and winning the 4 X 100m relay.
Chelsea Chukwuazi confidently winning the 300m by about 50m again. Chloe Murphy hurdling like there was no tomorrow and finishing a close 2nd.
Ramyle Hall showing his compe tors what he is made of and launching the discus out of sight and finishing 2nd. Here are all the students who got into the final and achieved top 8 finishes:
The overall points for the girls is 98 and they are currently in 2nd place. The highest team score since records began in 2000 (by 1 point). The boys have 53 points and they are currently in 5th Overall De La Salle is 3rd. The department has high hopes for this year and now it is all down to De La Salle’s KS3 athletes to keep training hard and finish in those top 8 posi ons.
Come on De La Salle, we can do it!
Training every morning, lunch and a er school. Check your emails or look at the metable outside the PE office. Miss Rothwell ‐ Curriculum Leader PE

Mavericks vs Sirens On Saturday 6th May myself, Mr Futcher and a mixture of Year 7, 8 and 9 netballers, went to see Herfordshire Mavericks netball team play Sirens. It was a chance for the girls to see a very high standard of netball being played. There was a lot of fantas c intercep ons, excellent court play and brilliant shoo ng. The girls were able to see how fast the game is and how quickly goals can be scored. The game was very close but unfortunately Mavericks lost although a very enjoyable evening was had by all. The girls behaved exemplary and were a credit to our school. Thank you to Mr Futcher for accompanying us. Miss Davies ‐ Teacher of PE
