    Organizing Data by:

    Using Line Plots

    Describing Data (mean, median,mode,

    and range)Making Charts or Graphs(bar

    Line Plots

Line plots are diagrams that organize

    data on a number line

If your data is numerical, one way toshow it would be with a line plot

Heres a way to make a line

    plot.

Find the least and the greatest numbersin your set of data for your line plot.

Choose a sequence that will fit yourdata.( arrange the numbers by 2s, 5setc.what ever works best for your data)

Put an x on the line plot to represent

your dataWrite a title for your line plot.

    Mean/Average

To find the mean oraverage of a set ofdata you first :

Add the numbers Count the number of

    data

    Divide the total of

the numbers by thenumber of data.

    6,4,6,5,7,7,4,9=48

    There are 8 sets of

    data

    Divide 48 by 8 = 6

    To check, 8 x 6= 48

    Median

The median number ofa set of data is thenumber found in themiddle.

Arrange your data inorder from least togreatest to find themiddle number.Sometimes you willhave two middlenumbers.

    Mode

The mode of a set of data is the number

that occurs most often in the data.

You may have more than one mode.4,6, and 7 are your modes in this set of

    data.

    Range

The range of a set of data is found by

subtracting the least number from the

    greatest number.

    9 4 = 5

In this set of data the range is from 4 to

9 with the exact range of 5.

    Bar graphs are

    another way to show

    data.

Double bar graphshelp you to compare

    data.

    Line graphs

    Line graphs are

    good for showing

    changes in data

    over time whenworking with dates.

    Double line graphs

can help you showeven more data and

    compare data.

    Circle graphs/Pie Charts

    Circle or pie charts

    are another way to

    show data, and

    compare data topercentages or

    fractions of a whole.

    Pictographs

    Pictographs are

    often used to show

    data in newspapers

    and magazinesbecause they get

    your attention.

    Each picture

    represents a specific

    number of data.

    In conclusion

Organizing data makes it easier to readand understand.

Using graphs and charts helps to get

    the attention of your audience

Charts, line plots and graphs are waysto organize data so it is useful to you.

Comparing data is easier when it isclear and specific.
