Fighting WordsDublin2009http://www.fightingwords.ie/whats_the_story/index.php

Fighting Words is a creative writing centre, established by Roddy Doyle and Sean Love. Inspired by 826 Valencia in San Francisco Fighting Words is located on Behan Square, Russell Street, Dublin 1, very close to Croke Park. Fighting Words helps students of all ages to develop their writing skills and to explore their love of writing. Each morning, Monday to Friday, from 10.00 to 12.00, primary school students, to a maximum of 30 children per group, visit the Fighting Words Centre, to write a book.  Helped on by Fighting Words tutors, they write a story which is projected onto a big screen. The children decide on the characters and plot, and write the story  sentence by sentence.  They edit, and make corrections as they go. Meanwhile, a volunteer artist draws an illustration or two, to go with the story. The group's element of the writing takes the story about three-quarters of the way through the plot.  Then the pages are collated, printed, covered and bound  with several blank pages at the end, so each child can write and illustrate his or her own ending, at school or at home.  A photograph of each student  the Author Photo - is incorporated on the back cover of each book.  Each student leaves Fighting Words with his or her own book.04/10/23 2Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

The Candela Structures: Architecture as StorytellingNew York2009How many times have you walked past an unusual building, structure, marking or sign and wondered what it was or how it got there? Cities are layered; traces of their histories hide in plain sight all around us. We might take passing notice of these mysterious clues, and some might even get around to a cursory Google search, but few seek answers with the dedication and enthusiasm of Kirsten Hively and Paul Lukas. What started as curiosity about two unusual waterfront shells snowballed into an extensive research project, exhibition, website and informal fan club. Here, Kirsten reminds us that our city’s forgotten structures and spaces have stories to tell and that “stories are what make a space into a place and connect all the disparate pieces of the metropolis.

BalladsAll over the place2009A ballad is a form of verse, often a narrative set to music. Ballads were particularly characteristic of British and Irish popular poetry and song from the later medieval period until the 19th century and used extensively across Europe and later North America, Australia and North Africa. Many ballads were written and sold as single sheet broadsides. The form was often used by poets and composers from the 18th century onwards to produce lyrical ballads. In the later 19th century it took on the meaning of a slow form of popular love song and the term is now often used as synonymous with any love song, particularly the pop or rock power ballad.

Navigatour/RacontourIreland, 2009For tourists and locals alike, finding your away around Ireland is not always the easiest thing to do. Maps are frequently out of date and GPS devices rarely include details of interesting sights and attractions.Irish entrepreneur John Ward has tackled the problem head on with a new GPS service, that not only helps you find ‘local activities, attractions and accommodation’ in Donegal but also helps bring them to life.Navigatour works with most sat nav devices and includes information about attractions, accommodation, places of interests and quirky sites across Donegal – and will appeal as much to locals as tourists.Even more interesting is Racontour, an audio upgrade which also includes interesting local histories, anecdotes and tales, narrated by locals – “some hilarious, some bizarre but all very interesting”. The audio files are triggered as the driver passes key locations, making it a bit like having a tour guide in the car with you.In order to get some authentic audio material we recorded a radio series called Rambling House where we got some great stories. Storytelling is a vital part of Irish culture so it was great to be involved in this aspect…Culture works very well with technology – it may seem like an odd partnership but in getting across what is great and interesting about this island, we need to work with the technologies that are in people’s pockets. The downloads will be sold via the navigatour.ie website as well as through local tourist offices and there’s an iPhone application currently in Beta. Of course the hard work is in building up the stories and while the company hopes to replicate the model across Ireland, this could be a great one to partner with in your own locale.

Ghost tourDublin Let us put you at your unease on Dublin's oldest and best Ghostbus Tour. We will introduce you to the dark romance of a city of gaslight ghosts and chilling legends.

The bus itself is a unique attraction, it is a mobile theatre decorated in the gothic style and features a live storyteller who takes you on a spellbinding trip through Dublin. Once onboard, we take advantage of this atmospheric setting to spirit you away to a world of felons, fiends and phantoms and put you in the mood for being both charmed and spooked at the same time.

En route you learn the real origins of Dracula and his Dublin born inventor, Bram Stoker. We stop at the College of Physicians to recreate the strange activities of Dr. Clossy, whose spirit is still seen walking the corridors carrying a bucket of human entrails. We visit the site where Walking Gallows, the notorious judge, jury and hangman dispatched his victims in a most gruesome fashion.

Multicultural Storytelling for Literacy Empowerment Harare, Zimbabwe, 2006

MUSTLE Africa uses storytelling and interactive workshops to encourage basic literacy among youth, and to raise awareness of other cultures and social issues. In April 2006, MUSTLE collaborated with Streets Ahead, a project working with street children in Harare, Zimbabwe, to dramatise a Ghanaian Anansi story as part of the Harare International Festival of the Arts. In August 2008, MUSTLE launched "Street Home", a free quarterly newsletter intended for those working in the community development, education, and youth arts fields, and specifically those working with vulnerable children and young people living on the streets. The newsletter will also be a medium through which streetchildren can share their experiences and stories.

IDP Voices

Colombia/Georgia2006IDP Voices used personal, participatory dialogue, ICT, and printed material (a book) to provide a "window" on the actual experiences of a group that may not otherwise have had the capacity to share their stories. The core strategy involved enabling people in both Colombia and the Republic of Georgia to see the phenomenon of displacement within a personal context. The idea is that, by looking not only at the displacement, but at the entire cycle of someone's life, a deeper understanding may arise of the impact of displacement.

Invisible ChildrenUganda and United States2003Motivated to raise awareness of "the unseen war" in Northern Uganda, 3 young filmmakers from the United States (US) are using storytelling in an effort to promote international advocacy to sustain the peace process and garner support for programming for those living through the conflict. Invisible Children revolves around a documentary film, an action campaign, and the provision of educational scholarships, mentorship, and the rebuilding of secondary academic institutions. The action campaign includes events held in the US; for example, April 2007's Displace Me used storytelling to personalise the situation of those in northern Uganda. More than 68,000 people in 15 US cities gathered to experience for one night what it was like to be displaced; their voices were heard and actions were seen by national media, members of Congress, the White House, and - hopefully - the international community.

KathaIndia1988

Katha has been working since 1988 to help children understand life through stories that link schools back to their communities. It enables 108,000 children living in urban poverty to tell/write/enact/enjoy stories, and through this process access relevant education for all-around development and social inclusion. Katha has found that stories initiate student activism, hone young readers' leadership in ways that spawn community resurgence, and help lift them out of poverty. Stories can inspire appreciation of other cultures and perspectives - which Katha calls vital for a heterogeneous India. "We see translation as a counter-divisive tool. Our quality schools and publishing programmes bring stories to culture-link classrooms, inform our teachers' work and training, and facilitate work with women and communities

StorybankIndia2006Launched in June 2006 and completed in February 2008, Storybank was an exploration of the power of stories to engage, stimulate, and challenge. The research endeavour, which centred around ethnography work carried out at VOICES and their community radio site in Budikote village, produced a repository of content that captures the essence of local community life, gives insights into their needs, and relates their prior experiences of technology. Cameraphones and digital library software were used to create a short audiovisual story - one that can give voice to people who cannot read and write or use the internet to record and access textual information. A large touch-screen display in the village's community resource centre features the villagers' short stories (up to 6 images and a 2-minute audio track, made on mobile phones donated by Nokia). The stories appear as a dynamic visual collage: groups may watch them together and download them to phones for later viewing.

The MothNew York1997-

The Moth, a not-for-profit storytelling organization, was founded in New York in 1997 by poet and novelist George Dawes Green, who wanted to recreate in New York the feeling of sultry summer evenings on his native St. Simon's Island, Georgia, where he and a small circle of friends would gather to spin spellbinding tales on his friend Wanda's porch. After moving to New York, George missed the sense of connection he had felt sharing stories with his friends back home, and he decided to invite a few friends over to his New York apartment to tell and hear stories. Thus the first "Moth" evening took place in his living room. Word of these captivating story nights quickly spread, and The Moth moved to bigger venues in New York. Today, The Moth conducts eight ongoing programs and has brought more than 3,000 live stories to over 100,000 audience members.

John W. Nordstrom, Founder NordstromHe was born Johan Nordström (later anglicizing it to "John") in the "twin-villages" of Alvik-Ale, near Luleå, Sweden, and 60 miles from the Arctic Circle. Nordstrom's father, a blacksmith, wainwright, and part-time farmer, died when Nordstrom was eight. Three years later, Nordstrom's mother took him out of school to work on the family farm. He emigrated to the United States at the age of 16. Arriving in America with $5 to his name, he worked his way across the continent taking jobs on railways and in mines, lumber camps and shipyards, eventually arriving in Seattle, Washington in 1896.While working at a sawmill he read a newspaper account of the discovery of gold in the Klondike and headed to Alaska to make his fortune. He invested in a claim on Gold Run, but his right to the claim was challenged and a lawsuit was filed. Nordstrom was delighted when another party offered him $30,000 for the claim. He sold it, split the money with his two partners, and returned with his share ($13,000) to the warmer climate of Seattle.n Seattle, Nordstrom attended business school, spent $2,500 building two rental houses on Capitol Hill and decided to join his friend, Carl Wallin, in the shoe business. He and Carl opened Wallin & Nordstrom, a shoe store, at Fourth Avenue and Pike Street in 1901. From that first shoe store grew the Nordstrom retail empire. John Nordstorm retired in 1928 selling his stake to his sons Everett Nordstrom and Elmer Nordstrom. Everett and Elmer also acquired Carl Wallin's share of the company. John's third son Lloyd Nordstrom joined the company as a part owner in 1933. Members of the Nordstrom family still own 20% of Nordstrom Inc and closely supervise the chain.[1] Ironically John Nordstrom never had a passion for the shoe business, although he continued to show up at the shoe store almost daily into his mid 80s to chat with customers.[2] His initials (JWN) are used as Nordstroms' ticker symbol on the New York Stock Exchange.

Scott Adams, Creator of DilbertAdams worked closely with telecommunications engineers at Crocker National Bank in San Francisco between 1979 and 1986. Upon joining the organization he quickly entered a management training program after being held at gunpoint twice in four months as a teller.[1] Over the years his positions included: management trainee, computer programmer, budget analyst, commercial lender, product manager, and supervisor. During presentations to upper management he often turned to his comic creations to add humour.[1] He studied economicsand management for his 1986 MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.Adams created Dilbert the character during this period; the name came from ex-boss Mike Goodwin.[1] Dogbert, originally named Dildog, was loosely based on his family's deceased pet beagle Lucy.[1] Periodic attempts to win publication with Dilbert and non-Dilbert comic panels alike failed, including with The New Yorker and Playboy (not necessarily with the same comics).[1] However an inspirational letter from Jack Cassady persuaded Adams to keep trying.[1]

He worked at Pacific Bell between 1986 and June 1995, and the personalities he encountered became the inspiration for many of his Dilbert characters. Adams first published Dilbert withUnited Media in 1989, while still employed at Pacific Bell. He had to draw his cartoons at 4am in order to work a full day at the company. His first pay-check for Dilbert was a monthly royalty check of $368.62.[1] Gradually Dilbert became more popular, and was published by 100 newspapers in 1991, and 400 by 1994. Adams attributes his success to his idea of including his e-mail address in the panels, thus facilitating feedback from readers.

Jack WelchCeo of General ElectricJack Welch was born in Salem, Massachusetts to John, a Boston & Maine Railroad conductor, and Grace, a homemaker.Welch attended Salem High School and later the University of Massachusetts Amherst, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. While at UMass he was a member of the Alpha chapter of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity.Welch went on to receive his M.S. and Ph.D at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1960.Welch joined General Electric in 1960. He worked as a junior engineer in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, at a salary of $10,500 annually. While at GE, he blew off the roof of the factory, and was almost fired for doing so.[2] Welch was displeased with the $1,000 raise he was offered after his first year, as well as the strict bureaucracy within GE. He planned to leave the company to work with International Minerals & Chemicals in Skokie, Illinois.Reuben Gutoff, a young executive two levels higher than Welch, decided that the man was too valuable a resource for the company to lose. He took Welch and his first wife Carolyn out to dinner at the Yellow Aster in Pittsfield, and spent four hours trying to convince Welch to stay. Gutoff vowed to work to change the bureaucracy to create a small-company environment.

Welch was named a vice president of GE in 1972. He moved up the ranks to become senior vice president in 1977 and vice chairman in 1979. Welch became GE's youngest chairman and CEO in 1981, succeeding Reginald H. Jones. By 1982, Welch had disassembled much of the earlier management put together by Jones.

Ben Cohen, Co-Founder Of Ben & Jerry’s Ice CreamRaised in the town of Merrick on Long Island by his parents Frances and Irving, Cohen first met and befriended his future business partner, Jerry Greenfield, in a junior high school gym class in 1963.[2] In his senior year, Cohen found work as an ice cream man before heading off to attend Colgate University upstate.[1]

Over the next decade, Cohen pursued his interest in pottery as he mixed further education - Skidmore, the University Without Walls program, the New School, and NYU - with a vast variety of menial labor - gigs as a McDonald's cashier, a Pinkerton guard, a deliverer of pottery wheels, a mop-boy at Jamesway and Friendly's, an assistant superintendent, an ER clerk, and a taxi driver - before eventually settling on work as a craft teacher at a private school for emotionally disturbed adolescents. It was during his three years at the Highland Community School that he began experimenting with making his own ice creamBy 1977, Ben had decided to go into the food business with his old friend Jerry Greenfield, and in May of the next year, the two men opened Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream Parlor in Burlington, Vermont. They had initially intended to start a bagel business, but found the equipment costs prohibitive and switched to ice cream instead, choosing Burlington as a location because it was a prominent college town which lacked an ice cream shop.[1] In part, their distinctive style of ice cream was developed to compensate for Ben's anosmia - his loss of smell and near-loss of taste - as Ben kept adding larger and larger chunks to the ice cream to satisfy his need for texture in food.[3]

Ben & Jerry's became an instant hit in Burlington, drawing crowds with ice creams that mixed fresh local cream and milk with wild new flavors and "large portions of whatever ingredients they felt tasted good on the day of making."[4]

Ben resigned as Chief Executive Officer in 1995.[5] Ben has not been actively involved with the company since the Unilever acquisition in 2000, apart from his membership on the advisory board.

CeolCarmel DunneCarmel is the Founder and Director of Ceol and believes passionately in the provision of early music education for all children, regardless of socio-economic background or learning ability.

Ceol began in 1999 to provide music programmes for the children of Ballyfermot, addressing the problem of inadequate music education in schools. Ceol developed its own unique methodology enabling teachers to deliver the music curriculum in a way that reaches every child. It was hugely successful, not only nurturing valuable music skills, it also had huge benefits both in attendance rates and academic achievement amongst the children in this disadvantaged area.

This is supported by international research which shows evidence of the links between early music education and academic competencies.Ceol is now rolling out its model to schools throughout the country and has expanded its programmes to include pre-schools. Ceol is working with over 340 educators who teach over 12,000 children, across Ireland, providing teacher training DVDs, lesson plans and resource materials, an on-line Forum and personal training, for primary school teachers. It has been shown to work on many levels, building confidence for teachers who were nervous about teaching many parts of the music curriculum. It is expected that their children will thrive not only in music, but in languages, maths and science also.

Ceol aims to target all children, at all pre-primary and primary levels in Ireland enabling a critical mass of Irish children to be musically literate and opening new avenues of opportunity for them.

"Ceol aims to complete the education of every child through music"

An Cosan1996The basic philosophy of the Shanty Education and Training Centre, is underpinned by one belief – that Adult Community Education is an individual and community transformative act, that the social exclusion and poverty experienced by the women and men of our community can be challenged and transformed through education.

Women suffer most from poverty and it is here that our educational programmes begin. Our focus is primarily on women and we operate out of feminist pedagogy. This means that we teach in a way that is women-centred and responds to a woman’s specific needs. It has also been proven by research and is reflected in our experience that a woman’s own education is a key factor in motivating her children to stay with their education. Therefore, investment in women’s education is central if we wish to transform poverty in areas of disadvantage.

This focus on women does not exclude men. Men are welcome to enrol in most of our classes and do. There are men on our staff, our working groups and on our board.

Lucy’s Coffee and TeaLucy Bonds admits she was nervous when her quaint little coffee shop on Birmingham’s Southside got a Goliath of a neighbor – Starbuck’s Coffee.Eighteen months later, Lucy’s Coffee & Tea is still going strong, supported by many of the loyal fans who have enabled the shop to celebrate 12 years in business this year.Bonds first gained her love of coffee in 1989 after moving to Seattle, Starbuck’s hometown. The Greensboro native moved back to her home state of Alabama in 1992 and says, “I knew Birmingham was the best place to start a coffee business.”She first started selling coffee from a cart near Tracy’s Cafeteria at University Boulevard and 20th Street South and within three years set up a shop across the street.Bonds credits the “hometown feel” and close presence to UAB for much of her success, along with Birmingham’s reputation as home of several independent coffee shops and two major coffee roasters – Royal Cup and Red Diamond Coffee & Tea.Most small coffee shops would get nervous with a Starbuck’s next door. How have you done it?It was a big challenge having the biggest of the big open next door. But it really has been fine. There has been so much support from the community.I really do believe that people enjoy that small-town, mom and pop approach. The essence of Lucy’s is a feeling of home.

GIY (Grow It Yourself) IrelandMichael KellyGIY is on a mission to encourage people from all walks of life and of all ages to grow their own food and to provide them with the practical skills they need to do so successfully.

At a local level the organisation establishes GIY groups that get growers together on a regular basis to learn from each other and exchange tips, produce and war-stories. Launched in September 2009, already there are over 70 GIY groups around the country with close to 5000 members. GIY Ireland aims to set up a group in every town in Ireland.

Activities include monthly meetings, talks and demos; garden visits, seed and seedling swaps; produce bartering, mentor panels and grower’s meitheals . The word meitheal describes the old Irish tradition of people in rural communities gathering on a neighbour’s farm to help save the hay or some other crop. In the grower’s meitheals, small groups help with a growing-related task in a member’s garden.Membership and meetings are free, and open to people interested in food growing at all levels, for example from growing a few herbs on a balcony to complete self-sufficiency. Founder Michael Kelly is a freelance journalist, author and ‘good-lifer’ based in Dunmore East, Co Waterford.

“GIY Ireland is about more than growing vegetables – it’s about growing communities.”

Key issues are not just about access but also quality – helping children and young people to go beyond the 3Rs (reading, writing, arithmetic) to realising their full potential to enable them to positively shape their futures and that of their communities and countries. We believe that we need an education system that also develops the 3 Cs: Character, full Capability and Commitment to others. This requires many changes: including a shift from a more instructive based approach to experiential learning within a values-based ethos. We view change and development as a process and see ourselves as a catalyst for change and growth within individuals and organisations.  We view leadership as essential and espouse a servant-leader approach, serving the cause and our partners.

JobcareWhen Paul Mooney established Jobcare in 1994 the unemployment rate in Ireland was 14.7%, and higher in some areas of inner city Dublin. Paul sought to bring a new type of response to the problem of how unemployment can hit at the heart of an individual. Through skills development, work experience, on-the-job training, and practical support within a caring and encouraging environment the Jobcare team has assisted many people towards not only meaningful employment but also towards changing how they and their communities see themselves.

During the years of economic growth in Ireland Paul perceived that one group was being left behind. Ex-offenders were finding little opportunity to re-establish themselves within society. So Paul extended Jobcare’s services to ex-offenders and those preparing to leave prison. Recidivism is a serious problem in Ireland, and studies show that meaningful employment after release from prison can significantly reduce the odds of an individual re-offending.Trasna, a programme of individualized coaching, training and education, along with paid work, provides an opportunity for participants to forge a new path for themselves and their families within their communities.

Looking at the participants who have already gone through the programme, Trasna has not only made significant savings for the State in terms of prison costs, it has also cut the re-offending rate for this group of individuals down to less than 10% when the national average is 50%. At a personal level, the lives of these men and women have been transformed and hopes and dreams are becoming a reality - many are now in paid employment, enrolled on college courses, and involved in youth or community work.04/10/23 32Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Rise Foundation

Singer Frances Black set up The RISE Foundation in 2006 to assist families of addicts to understand the nature of the disease of addiction and the profound effects it has on relationships. The idea came to her after she spoke out about her own recovery from addiction, which generated a huge reaction around the country. She was inundated with people looking for help for family members and Frances realised that families in this situation were finding it difficult to find out where to go to access help.

This subject being so close to her heart, Frances went back to college to study to be an addiction counsellor and now works with people who are trying to step into recovery from this disease, as well as their families.Through her work, Frances discovered that there was very little awareness about the effects of addiction on families and decided to set up The RISE foundation which now has a working group in Dublin and Belfast. It aims to break the cycle of addiction, to free families from the heartache of a loved one in addiction and to rediscover relationships in families 'lost' to addiction.

“I want to change the way people view addiction and to reduce the shame and stigma associated with addiction.”

Dia Art Foundation The Dia Art Foundation is a non-profit organization

that initiates, supports, presents, and preserves art projects. It was established in 1974 by Philippa de Menil, the daughter of Houston arts patron Dominique de Menil[2] and an heiress to the Schlumberger oil exploration fortune, and art dealer Heiner Friedrich, Philippa's husband; the couple wanted to support projects "whose nature or scale would preclude other funding sources."[3] The name “Dia,” taken from the Greek word meaning “through,” was chosen to suggest the institution’s role in enabling artistic projects that might not otherwise be realized.Dia holds a major collection of work by artists of the 1960s and 1970s, on view at Dia:Beacon, which opened in the Hudson Valley in 2003. Dia additionally maintains long-term site-specific projects in the western United States, New York City, and on Long Island. Dia’s permanent holdings include artworks by artists who came to prominence during the 1960s and 1970s, including Joseph Beuys, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Agnes Martin, and Andy Warhol. The art of this period represented a radical departure in artistic practice and is often large in scale; it is occasionally ephemeral or site-specific. Today, Dia commissions, supports, and presents site-specific installations and long-term exhibitions of work by these artists, as well as those of younger generations.

Artangel

Based in London but working across Britain and beyond, Artangel commissions and produces exceptional projects by outstanding contemporary artists. Over the past two decades, the projects have materialised in a range of different sites and situations and in countless forms of media.

Each new project evolves from a singular commissioning process, born from an open-ended conversation with an artist offered the opportunity to imagine something extraordinary. Artangel’s work is powered by the belief that artists are capable of creating visionary works which impact upon the way we view our world, our times and ourselves in unusual and enduring ways. Many Artangel projects are given shape by a particular place and time. They can involve journeys to unfamiliar locations, from underground hangars to abandoned libraries. Or sometimes they can offer unfamiliar experiences in more familiar environments – a terraced house, a department store or daytime television.

This open-ended approach to the artistic process has seen Artangel generate some of the most talked-about, contentious and acclaimed art of recent times, including work by Francis Alÿs, Matthew Barney, Jeremy Deller, Douglas Gordon, Roni Horn, Steve McQueen, Michael Landy, Brian Eno, Gregor Schneider, Robert Wilson and Rachel Whiteread.

Dalai Lama Center for Peace and EducationThe Vancouver-based Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education is an embodiment of His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama’s life-long commitment to compassion and inner well-being. Founded in 2005 by the Dalai Lama and Victor Chan, the Center is envisioned as a world-class institution, firmly grounded in Vancouver yet present and influential on the global stage.

The Center has no religious or political affiliations. It promotes peace through education, personal transformation, and dialogue. The Dalai Lama believes that vital, sustainable communities depend upon many small, individual acts of compassion and helpfulness. By thinking less about ourselves and more about the well-being of others, we enhance our growth and happiness. By helping others, we contribute to the greater good. Along the way, our lives and the lives of others are transformed.

The pleasures of good food can also help to build community and celebrate culture and regional diversity.Clean:When we talk about clean food, we are talking about nutritious food that is as good for the planet as it is for our bodies. It is grown and harvested with methods that have a positive impact on our local ecosystems and promotes biodiversity.Fair:We believe that food is a universal right. Love letters to the Future

Produced by the Emmy® Award winning production company Xenophile Media in Toronto, Love Letters to the Future is a project designed to raise awareness about climate change.

Imagine what generations in the future will think of us if we don't do anything about climate change. And then try to imagine that future differently. What would you say to a generation 100 years from now?

The project is collecting video love letters to the future from the public, and is also collecting filmed statements from those in remote locations, such as Raratonga, and the Soloman and Cook Islands, who are most effected by climate change.

A time capsule being built in Toronto will preserve the 100 best messages uploaded to www.loveletterstothefuture.com, as voted on by the public. It will be sealed in December, to be re-opened on December 13, 2109. To ensure our love letters are still around 100 years from today, they will be stored using Monolith™ cards, a technology incorporating analog and digital data pioneered by the Imaging and Media Lab at the University of Basel.

The project's goal is to collect a critical mass of love letters and present them to the world at a live event during the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in mid-December. A selection of the best time-capsule messages will be projected at the live event and read out by a (soon-to-be-revealed!) celebrity.

Anyone can be a part of this project! Create your love letter to the future – as a video, image or 140 character text – and upload it to:www.loveletterstothefuture.com

Users can also add pros and cons about results. Hunch was launched publicly on June 15, 2009, and since then has been fully open and available to the public.[1] The website has reached a total worldwide site traffic of 1.2 million unique visitors in February 2010.Hunch was co-founded by Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake[2] with an 11-person team of MIT graduates.[3] The company is located in New York City.[4] On December 7, 2009, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales announced that he will be joining Hunch.com as Board Member and advisor.

Camelot Guardian Scheme

Set up in Holland to combat the serious threat of squatting, Camelot installed a number of pre vetted, key workers known as Guardians to live in these properties under a license rather than a tenancy. This way the property was protected by virtue of being occupied preventing it from being squatted in; while the license ensured that neither the building owner nor the Guardian were tied to each other for longer than the initial three-month agreement.

Unseen ToursHomeless people in London are now finding employment as tour guides, giving visitors a unique perspective on the city's streets and monuments. The program was the brainchild of volunteers of Sock Mob, a local group that brings clean socks, food supplies and friendship to London's homeless. Group organizers received a small grant from an organization that funds social entrepreneurship to launch Unseen Tours. After three months of training, four homeless guides now take groups of tourists on regular excursions throughout the city. The guides get to keep most of the cash fees the participants pay to take the tour, helping them to secure an income for food, and eventually, housing.

Instead, Information is Beautiful contains visually stunning displays of information that blend the facts with their connections, their context and their relationships - making information meaningful, entertaining and beautiful. This is information like you have never seen it before - keeping text to a minimum and using unique visuals that offer a blueprint of modern life - a map of beautiful colour illustrations that are tactile to hold and easy to flick through but intriguing and engaging enough to study for hours.

CoddleCoddle (sometimes Dublin Coddle) is an Irish dish consisting of layers of roughly sliced pork sausages and rashers (thinly sliced, somewhat fatty back bacon) with sliced potatoes, and onions. Traditionally, it can also include barley.Coddle is traditionally associated with Dublin, Ireland. It was reputedly a favourite dish of Seán O'Casey and Jonathan Swift, and it appears in several Dublin literary references including the works of James Joyce. The dish is semi-boiled, and semi-steamed in the stock produced by boiling the rashers and sausages. Some traditional recipes favour the addition of a small amount of Guinness to the pot, but this is very rare in modern versions of the recipe. The dish should be cooked in a pot with a well-fitting lid in order to steam the ingredients left uncovered by water. The only seasoning is usually salt, pepper, and occasionally parsley. It could be considered a comfort food in Ireland, and is inexpensive, easy to prepare and quick to cook. It is often eaten in the winter months. In the days when Catholics were not supposed to eat meat on Fridays, this was a meal often eaten on Thursdays as it allowed a family to use up any remaining sausages or rashers.

The 40 FootThe Forty Foot is a promontory on the southern tip of Dublin Bay at Sandycove, County Dublin, Ireland, where people have swum in the Irish Sea all year round for some 250 yearsIn former times it was kept solely as a gentlemen's bathing place and the gentlemen's swimming club was established to help conserve the area. Due to its isolation and gender-specific nature it became a popular spot for nudists, but in the 1970s during the women's liberation movement, a group of female equal-rights activists plunged into the waters, now it is open to women and children as well. The gentlemen's swimming club still exists and is open to both genders, it expects voluntary contributions to the upkeep of the area. There is no definite explanation for the origin of the name. It has been speculated that it may have been called the Forty Foot after the 42nd Highland Regiment of Foot (now known as the Black Watch), a regiment of the British Army, which is said to have been stationed here. Other suggestions forwarded include the depth of the water (actually less than 40 feet) and the width of the road leading to the bathing place.

Horses in the city

The horse market at Smithfield, Dublin takes place on the first Sunday of every month. People come from all over Ireland to trade horses and equipment. It's absolute chaos, with young kids galloping across the cobbles on distressed looking ponies, horses whinnying, gardai chasing jaunting cars on their bicycles. A big part of the horse scene involves the keeping of animals, by Dublin urban youth, in gardens or public areas. The Dublin Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says that the market facilitates the sale of horses to under-16s, who are then unable - or unwilling to look after them. Amongst the dozens of horses visible, I did see a couple of examples of cruelty - the most obvious one of all was by an elderly man, kicking his pony in the stomach for no apparent reason. There's talks by Dublin City Council of moving the market out of the city - as Smithfield becomes increasingly gentrified, the more urbane of the urban dwellers in the surrounding apartments are apparently unimpresssed with the smell of horse shit once a month!

Molly Malone

The song tells the fictional tale of a beautiful fishmonger who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin, but who died young, of a fever. The name "Molly" originated as a familiar version of the names Mary and Margaret. While many such "Molly" Malones were born in Dublin over the centuries, no evidence connects any of them to the events in the song.[1][2] Nevertheless, in 1988 the Dublin Millennium Commission endorsed claims concerning a Molly Malone who died on 13 June 1699, and proclaimed 13 June to be "Molly Malone day".[1]

In fact the song is not recorded earlier than 1883, when it was published in Cambridge, Massachusetts.[3] It was also published by Francis Brothers and Day in London 1884 as a work written and composed by James Yorkston, of Edinburgh, with music arranged by Edmund Forman. The London edition states that it was reprinted by permission of Kohler and Son of Edinburgh, implying that the first edition was in Scotland, though no copies of it have been located.[4] According to Siobhán Marie Kilfeather the song is from the music hall style of the period, and while one cannot wholly dismiss the possibility that it is "based on an older folk song", "neither melody nor words bear any relationship to the Irish tradition of street ballads." She describes the story of the historical Molly as "nonsense".

The band formed at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in 1976 when the members were teenagers with limited musical proficiency. Within four years, they signed to Island Records and released their debut album Boy. By the mid-1980s, they had become a top international act. They were more successful as a live act than they were at selling records, until their 1987 album The Joshua Tree, which, according to Rolling Stone, elevated the band's stature "from heroes to superstars".
