IntroductionThis presentation outlines a vision for a new multi-functional building for the College of

Design, Construction and Planning:

DCP Collaboratory

The Need for a New Building• DCP is adopting more collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches to

learning and research, which existing facilities are not designed to support;

• DCP is working to significantly increase its research output but presently lacks the facilities to keep pace with cutting edge technologies;

• DCP aspires to recruit world class faculty and top talented students but it currently lacks the facilities to attract them;

• DCP’s existing facilities are inadequate to meet the growing space needs as student enrollments increase.

CATALYST BUILDING• Downtown Gainesville• Home of the Florida Institute for Built Environment

Resilience (FIBER), a 26-researcher institute.

INFINITY HALL• Off-campus UF-affiliated dormitory

housing the Digital Fabrication Lab• Laser cutters, 3D printers, waterjet

cutter, CNC mill, and fabrication spaces

RINKER HALL• Home of the Rinker School of

Construction Management• Classrooms, offices, BIM lab, materials

labs

FINE ARTS COMPLEX• Architecture and Fine Arts Library,

shared exhibition and lecture halls• DCP studios, offices, spray booth,

range of collaborative and multidisciplinary learning and research

activities can take place.

qualities that we espouse as a College

Creative Collisions Commons (C3)• A reconfigurable, multi-functional space within which students,

faculty and staff can collaborate on a formal or informal basis. • Will have a variety of reconfigurable furniture arrangements that

will support individual, small group and medium-sized group interactions.

• Will serve as the College’s ‘Living Room’.

Research Hub• To house all DCP collaborative research centers and institutes such

that faculty and graduate students can freely exchange ideas and

work collaboratively to undertake research.

• The Hub will have hot-desking facilities for graduate students, with

shared meeting, collaboration and refreshment facilities for the

research centers.

Digital Modeling and Fabrication Spaces

• Will enable larger multidisciplinary groups of students to work together on digital models, simulations, and fabrication.

Large Multipurpose Hall and Seminar Rooms• A large multi-purpose hall that is able to accommodate lecture

audiences of 150 – 200 (the College currently has no such facility). • Will serve as exhibition/gallery space with a mixture of permanent

and changing displays. • Should have retractable dividers that can split the hall into several

smaller seminar rooms for various College or academic unit functions.

Educational Spaces• Will offer instructional laboratories and collaborative studios with a

number of physical and technological capabilities to support design-based learning and teaching.

• Includes flexible furniture, multiple displays and inputs, built-in video conferencing, rolling panels that can be used for pinups, space dividers, etc.

Exterior Workspace• An outdoor multipurpose covered space that can support many

different kinds of activities such as maker space, group work, discussion, collaboration and engagement.

• The space should be equipped with flexible, multipurpose furniture that adapts to a group’s or individual’s task.

Additional Considerations• Facility should meet applicable LEED and WELL Building standards• Facility should be a living, learning laboratory for our students:

• Some exposed construction elements• Reconfigurable building systems

• Student groups need to track the project from design to completion• A digital twin of the facility will be needed
