DCNM Slow Drain Analysis – What is Slow Drain?

Slow Drain Explained

• A Slow Drain Device is a device that does not accept frames at the rate generated by the source. In the presence of slow devices, Fiber Channel networks are likely to lack frame buffers, resulting in switch port credit starvation and potentially impacting Inter-Switch Links (ISLs) and/or port channels.

• Slow Drain typically occurs when either a storage or end device is not receiving or sending frames fast enough to ensure that frames are flowing through the fabric

• This creates a situation in which back pressure is felt behind the devices creating the slowness

• Symptoms are usually felt fabric wide

• **Slow drain can impact devices not directly involved in the problem

DCNM Slow Drain Analysis – Slow drain causes

• Edge devices

An edge device can be slow to respond for a variety of reasons:

• Server performance problems: application or operating system

• HBA problems: Driver or physical failure speed mismatches, meaning there is one fast device and one slow device

• Non-graceful virtual machine exit on a virtualized server, resulting in packets held in HBA buffers

• Storage subsystem performance problems, including overload

• Poorly performing tape drives

• ISLs

• Lack of B2B credits for the distance that the ISL is traversing

• The existence of slow drain at edge devices

• Physical

• The most common causes of slow drain type issues is typically related to physical optics and cabling infrastructure!

• DCNM provides online slow drain analysis, and displays list of devices with

potential slow drain issues

• Significant features of slow drain analysis are:

• Automate tedious manual troubleshooting

• Find issues in the fabric quickly

• Automate collection/polling. Set up on demand collection of counters

• Reduce false positives. Fetch list of host, storage and switch ports,

prioritized by slow drain severity by checking the rate of change in

these counters

• Statistically display in bar chart format visually, showing fluctuations in

counters

• Provides symptom priority fields, that can be sorted to find specific

devices and links to their inventory pages

• Cisco DCNM SAN Insights is a new feature within DCNM that visualizes MDS SAN Telemetry data provided by the 32GB product family.

• Cisco has created a fully native integrated in hardware architecture that allows deep frame visibility inline without the needs to specialized hardware. Simple plug in your devices and Cisco’s DCNM SAN Insights goes to work. This feature is available in all of the hardware platforms of the 32GB portfolio.

• For HA on LAN deployments leverage PostgresSQL HA deployment

• For Scale and HA on a SAN deployment leverage Federation where

big scale is required (requires Oracle RAC)

• If using a VM ensure you reserve the required resources to the VM

(this is very important)

• Use server properties file to customize DCNM

• Leverage DCNM End Point Locator to find and map end devices
