DB Group's environmental work - climate goals for reduced carbon dioxide emissions
DB Schenker’s common climate objective is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20% per ton-kilometre by 2020.
DB Schenker in Sweden has set itself an even tougher objective - halving the emissions per ton-kilometre by 2020.

Our comprehensive environmental objective
Reduce our carbon dioxide emissions in every transport assignment by 50% through to 2020.

Schenker sends out two surveys to its partner transport operators once a year.
The survey is sent by email and the answers are collected in a database.
One of the surveys deals with vehicle specific questions - Euro class, fuel consumption, etc.
The other survey deals with 'soft questions'.
The answers are evaluated centrally and some of the hauliers are contacted.
The answers are sorted by Schenker district and sent to the corresponding ‘head office’ for a personal review between the haulier and the district manager.
In 2008, responses were received from hauliers representing 89% of the vehicles in Schenker’s national transport.

Different methods of transport – a comparison
TrainTrains are generally very energy
efficient and nearly always the best alternative for land transport from an environmental point of view, particularly in Sweden where trains run on electricity produced from hydro and nuclear energy (electricity generated by coal is not as environmentally friendly).
TruckNew trucks are often more energy
efficient than older vehicles, but it is the regulated emissions such as particles (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NOX), sulphur oxide (SOX) and hydrogen (HC) that have decreased with every new Euro class.
ShipShipping is often energy efficient
because of the large amount of goods transported per unit - speed also affects fuel consumption.
The current drawback is the high nitrogen and sulphur oxide emissions. Better fuels and cleaning techniques are available.
AirplaneAir transport requires a lot of energy
and is therefore linked with high carbon dioxide emissions for each transported unit. The developmental focus here is on more energy-efficient engines and renewable fuels.

A new emissions report will be launched in 2009.
The customer can access the emissions report by logging in to ‘MySchenker’ - login details can be ordered from Customer Services.
