SOUTHEAST MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY www.smponline.org Continues through Feb. 6, 2011 Spirit – Bill Armstrong Bill Armstrong’s Infinity series transforms re-photographed and appropriated images to create ephemeral, abstracted and de-materialized color fields and strongly evocative iconic figures. Working with source material as diverse as African masks, Roman busts, statuary and other representations, Armstrong’s finished figurative and portrait images are powerfully suggestive of an unseen presence. Continues through March 21, 2011 LYONIA GALLERY: Bruce Mozert Bruce Mozert, by the age of 20, was already an accomplished photographer in N.Y. City. He came to Silver Springs in the fall of 1938 when they were making Tarzan films. Soon after arriving, he built his first underwater camera case. The underwater pictures he took were so clear that MGM took them to Hollywood and used them. His pictures were picked up by wire services and magazines throughout the world. Mozert became well known for his underwater photographs, as well as his pin-ups and animal photos. He also worked as an underwater motion picture cameraman working with NBC, ABC, CBS and many Hollywood productions. The Southeast Museum of Photography's new Lyonia Gallery presents exhibitions and programs related to the environment, land-use, local history and regional culture in an exhibition space in Volusia County Government's new LYONIA ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER. The museum gallery occupies display space immediately adjacent to the environmental exhibits area of the Center. Feb. 19 - May 13, Stuart Rome - Signs and Wonders Stuart Rome followed in the footsteps of many of the great pro-genitors of natural science and journeyed to the heart of the Florida peninsula. His celebrated landscape images draw their inspiration and take their lead from the writings, journals, and illustrations of many of these important early naturalists. Signs and Wonders is concerned with the relationship between people and their environment. They examine the visual evidence present in the landscape of our cultural priorities and history and expand upon the standard landscape vocabulary to build a complex language of layers, networks and connections in the landscape. CULTURAL www.DaytonaState.edu/TheArts Feb. 1- 5, Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Daytona State College School of Music, Entertainment and Art is proud to be hosting the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, Region IV. As stated on the KCACTF website “Started in 1969 by Roger L. Stevens, the Kennedy Center's founding chairman, KCACTF is a national theater program involving 18,000 students from colleges and universities nationwide which has served as a catalyst in improving the quality of college theater in the United States. The KCACTF has grown into a network of more than 600 academic institutions throughout the country, where theater departments and student artists showcase their work and receive outside assessment by KCACTF respondents.” The very best college and university theater students from nine states will be coming to Daytona Beach. With well over 1,000 people taking part in the festival this is sure to be an exciting time for all involved! While the productions and seminars are not open to the public , we have made special arrangements with University of Central Florida, a KCACTF regional winner, to give an encore performance of their play “Dames at Sea”. Feb. 6, 2:30 p.m. Dames at Sea Produced by UCF Conservatory Theatre, with book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller and music by Jim Wise. “Dames At Sea” is a musical comedy inspired by 1930s Hollywood director and choreographer Busby Berkeley. “Dames At Sea” pays homage to “42nd Street,” complete with the theme of a young girl going to Broadway and making it big — plus an abundance of musical numbers, dancing and tapping. This family-friendly, lighthearted romp will be reprised after competing in Region IV of the Kennedy Center - American College Theatre Festival.
