Beyond Today’s Possibilities, No LimitsNo Limits
T here has been a lot of news about TIMTOS over the past months or so
from both local and international media. Twenty-three media companies from 16 countries gathered for TIMTOS 2015 Press Conference at Meeting Room 403, Level 4 at the Nangang Exhibition Center. Given the number of journalists who came, it was somewhat assured that the increase expresses the continued commitment and possibly a positive economic optimism of Taiwan's machine tools industry community.
To get things started, Mr John Hsu, Chairman of Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI), gave the first message. “TIMTOS is expected to bring in US$2.1 billion worth of business opportunities. It is also expected to boost the revenue of several machine tools and machine parts manufacturers to exceed NT$10 billion (US$317 million), such as Victor Taichung, Fair Friend Group, Tongtai Group, Goodway Machine Corp., and Hiwin Technologies Corporation. It is estimated that the annual export value of machinery industry will grow from 8% to 10%, and possibly reach a record high. By the end of the year, the machinery industry should be able to achieve the goal of becoming one of the three major industries in Taiwan worth over NT$1 trillion (US$3.17 billion).
Mr. Yih Jyh KANG Executive Director
of Exhibition Department Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), explained, “TIMTOS 2015 marks the debut of many automated products. For example, the mechanical power press maker CHIN FONG has launched its automated automotive sheet metal production line, which can boost the efficiency of laser welded molding plate and sheet output by over 30%. Another example is FATEK, of FEMCO Group, who has developed two types of fully automated aluminum wheel production lines.”
According Mr. KANG, another highlight of TIMTOS 2015 is the Taiwan Controller Appliance Pavilion, which is exhibited on the fourth floor of the Nangang Exhibition Hall. It features three Taiwanese controller makers (SYNTEC Technology, Delta and Advantech-LNC) and 6 machine tool manufacturers (Goodway, Tongtai, Yang Iron, Manford, Chevalier and Chiah Chyun), who are showcasing the applications of Taiwanese CNC machine tools, such as cell phone case processing and dental implant processing.
Mr. Alan LU, Chairman of Machine Tool Committee, TAMI talked about Industry 4.0. “Many are discussing the technology trend triggered by “Industry 4.0” nowadays. In fact, there were many “smart machines” with
built-in software and connectivity displayed at the IMTS 2014 in the U.S. and JIMTOF in Japan already. Taiwanese makers have the IT advantages to keep up with the specification of smart machines and peripherals. The key, however, lies in the data openness of major controller makers.”
TAMI Chairman of Machine Parts & Elements Committee Mr. King WANG also said something about Industry 4.0. “From a machine part maker’s perspective, I think Taiwanese machine tool manufacturers should invest in developing products that fulfils industry 4.0 and other market needs. Machine part makers, on the other hand, can try to design products according to user needs. Taiwanese machine part makers work with manufacturers around the world. We improve ourselves by working with countries with advanced technology, and we can share what we have learned with our Taiwanese partners to enhance the quality of Taiwanese machine tools.”
Lastly, all eyes of the machine tool world are on TIMTOS 2015, Asia’s top machine tool event that connects the makers, products, and buyers for massive business opportunities. This is a place where smart technology meets a global marker and where innovation spell success.
TIMTOS 2015 transforms and moves up the value chain

TIMTOS Trade Meetings: Facilitating Relationships, Building Contacts
O ne of the interesting things about attending a trade exhibition is the
thought of consistently seeing and hearing information from quality sources, not to mention discovering the latest trends. TIMTOS organizers help you stay on top of the major themes in the machine tools procurement and supply chain management.
In the afternoon of the opening day, about 171 trade meetings were held to link foreign buyers with producers. You could hear and feel the buzz of anticipation that surrounded Room 402a at the Nangang Exhibition Hall. Decision makers who have specifically flown in from Germany, Turkey, USA, Brazil, France, Bulgaria, Romania, UK, Ukraine, Czech, Finland, Australia, Mexico, Slovak, Russia and Spain could only mean that business in machine tools continues to be felt.
Taiwan’s machine tools industry has evolved significantly over the years. From its initial traditional machinery and tools designs, evolving and transforming to serve global markets.
From a supplier's perspective, the TIMTOS 2015 trade meeting is extremely beneficial from an expense and time perspective. In one venue, attendees are able to meet with multiple existing customers and several potential new customers. In the economy today, we all have to be aware of expenses and this was an efficient approach. There is also the ability to meet clients in person and develop stronger relationships. Conference calls are great but in person meetings are still an integral part of the equation. From a buyer’s standpoint, it does mean time out of the office. Daily tasks do not get put on hold for you to attend a trade show. And of course there is the expense of travel. However, it can be a valuable use of time as well. Many suppliers are all in one location. In addition is the networking value with peers in other organizations.
“This is my third time to visit TIMTOS. I am looking for new machine tool concepts and new suppliers that I can bring back to Ukraine. I have already found a lot of manufacturers in the past and have brought
their machines and tools back home. I am sure that I can find a few more potential suppliers after attending TIMTOS business matching meetings,” says Mr Volodymyr Ignatolia, General Director, WEBER COMECHANICS UKRAINE.
“I have visited Taiwan in the past years even before I came to this company. I have found a lot of quality machine tool components and machines made from Taiwan. This time, I’m looking for new suppliers, new designs, and new materials. TIMTOS is a specialised trade fair with a good concentration of machine tool equipment and component suppliers, which makes our sourcing easier. I plan to explore cooperation with new suppliers,” comments Mr Mustafa Kemal Celik, Purchasing Manager at AKYAPAK.
Some of the key buyers are: DOOSAN INFRACORE– Korea’s top machine-tool CNC maker. KOVOSVIT – Czech Republic’s leading high-level digital lathe manufacture. FAGOR – Spain’s renowned automation control manufacturer. FINVAL
– Russia’s vanguard industrial group. WEBER- Ukraine’s famous machine manufacturer. HEMAQ – Mexico’s leading machine tool importer; and TEZMAKSAN- Turkey’s key machine trader.
Target procurement items: vertical machining tools, double-column machining tools, electro-discharge machines, multiple-axis machining tools and CNC metal machining lathes.
Obtaining a face-to-face meeting with a prospective buyer is hard to secure, painful to schedule and expensive to attend. But nothing really beats an in-person meeting with a new prospect. The power and purpose of TIMTOS Trade Meeting in this rapidly connected machine tool world continue to grow with each year. Far from being a relic of a bygone age, today’s tradeshow remains the premier event to learn, interact and maybe even strike a deal with Taiwan’s next generation of innovators. So get on a plane. Go to TIMTOS. Think outside the box. Be open to new ideas. And have a bit of fun along the way.

Taipei Expo Dome presents best forming machines at TIMTOS
Taipei Expo Dome will join the TIMTOS 2015 event in the forming machine
presentation hall. In the previous issue, there were several companies introduced which are for large workpieces. In this issue, there are two more introduced, which are for smaller but critical workpieces.
Metal forming expert in automotive & motorcycle sector: Yih Shen Machinery (YSM)
YSM has been making in press forming machines since the 1980’s and has developed a solid foundation and powerful energy in machine R&D. Recently the company successfully had its high-end press forming machines sold to the European market. Now the European market takes up 20% of YSM's exports, which indicates that Taiwanese products are highly accepted on the international platform.
"Our global arrangement is pretty good as equilibrium, and the primary application
of our machines is in the automotive and motorcycle sectors, such as components: like the tube mount components, brake components , and headl ight mount components," declared Vice-General Manager Lin Ching-Tang. Due to the advanced technology and durability offered by YSM, YSM machines for both sheet and wire rods are widely respected by customers from the automotive industry. With regards to sheet forming, YSM does not adopt the continual mold design but pre-presses the sheet and has the sheet then put onto machines for the forming process, which successfully reduces waste. Together with the all-in-one forming trend now prevalent in the industry, Mr. Lin and his R&D crews have integrated presses, forming machines, tapping machines, welding equipment, and automation into one and this design indeed has helped YSM customers keep their costs down.
40% of YSM machines are for automotive and motorcycle sectors, and another 40% is for Miniature Circuit Breaker sector; the rest is for other sectors. The latest
YSM CNC-39T strip and wire forming machine is of high processing specifications, such as the processing competence of 1.5-6.5 mm wire diameter, 60mm maximal width of strip, 0.8-3.0mm thickness of strip, 150ppm of maximal forming speed, and many other advantageous features. Machine size is optimal at 3500×1800×2350mm with a total weight 6.8 tons.

software converts the STL file automatically to toolpaths in G-code, then sends the G-code directly to your 3D printer. With 3D printing, there’s no need to tweak cutting paths, and no worry about the tool crashing into your work. If creating small 3D objects is your goal, a 3D printer is the right choice.
Author: Tom Owad
Note: Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is a process of making three dimensional solid objects from a digital model. 3D printing is achieved using additive processes, where an object is created by laying down successive layers of material. 3D printing is considered distinct from traditional machining techniques (subtractive processes) which mostly rely on the removal of material by drilling, cutting, etc.
Three notable trends in metalworking & manufacturingASEAN i s mov ing ahead to
forge a strong regional supplier ecosystem and adopting disruptive
technologies that will change the way people live and create products. Rajiv Ghatikar, Vice President and General Manager, ASEAN and Australasia, Siemens PLM Software spoke about three noteworthy trends that will be big in the metalworking and manufacturing this year.
Smart technologies
Smart technology will have the greatest impact on the manufacturing industry. Today’s products and machines are becoming increasingly complex, with operations that depend on internal software that’s typically more complicated than the design itself, not to mention the push to connect products to the Internet. Key to success in this manufacturing environment is to embrace “digitalisation”, a concept that extends beyond creating digital pictures to adopting digital as a fundamental approach to innovation. The next generation of smart products will have
additional dimensions of connectedness and cognitive capability - smart innovation that enables a model-based enterprise in which smart product development is based on "systems thinking”.
Big data in PLM
In this new world of intelligent, connected products, data collected about a product’s operating environment and about how customers use the product can be tapped by product designers as they consider improvements for the next generation. But the value of that information is only optimised when designers apply intelligence and action to this data to improve product automation and production. This is where Big Data will come into play. Recognising the need for segregating the relevant pieces of data from the larger mass of information, companies are diverting their IT spends towards setting up specialised data optimisation laboratories and arming their data centres with state-of-the-art data mining mechanisms. Traditional factory floor data analysis tools, like Manufacturing
Execution Systems (MES), are making way for newer, faster, smarter Product Lifecycle Management applications.
Digital manufacturing
A key point of integration between PLM and various shop floor applications and equipment, enabling the exchange of product-related information between design and manufacturing groups.
For ins tance, le t ' s look a t the automotive sector - in 2012, the ASEAN nations manufactured more than 4.2 million vehicles, including nearly 2.5 million in Thailand. The highest sales were in Thailand (1.4 million), Indonesia (1.1 million), and Malaysia (627,000). It is predicted a 2.2 million-unit increase in passenger car production in Southeast Asia by 2020. With car demand slowing in China and reversing in India, global marques with excess capacity are retooling their strategy in Southeast Asia and taking bold steps into previously overlooked markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and even Myanmar.
With the growing ambition and growth,
come key challenges like environmental issues, safety, information management, and market complexity. Innovation is the only key to solve these challenges. PLM is important for manufacturers to empower businesses to make unified, information-driven decisions at every stage in the product lifecycle. A good example of this is Siemens PLM incorporating cloud capabilities in its software to increase cost effectiveness, improve efficiency and product quality, and speed up time-to-market.
A quick note on geographical trends in manufacturing
While there were a lot of talks about reshoring in 2014, manufacturers from the U.S. and Europe still found the need to shift production closer to the growing Asian consumer markets. They sought outposts such as Singapore that have enhanced their capabilities in advanced manufacturing and other high-tech areas such as robotics and 3D printing. This trend will continue well into 2015.
CNC Machining vs 3D printingA 3D printer’s fabrication technique
is additive (See Note) — most of them use a hot plastic extruder to
“print” a plastic model. This contrasts with subtractive fabrication tools, which start with a solid block of material and use a cutter to remove the excess. Subtractive fabrication is far more common than additive, especially when working with metal and wood. Lathes, mills, saws, drills, and other CNCs like laser and vinyl cutters are all subtractive tools.
The Subtractive Equivalent of 3D Printing
A CNC milling machine or router is the subtractive equivalent of the 3D printer. For the hobbyist, milling is inferior to printing in numerous ways.
Milling inherently causes waste, and without some sort of dust control, that waste gets flung throughout the room.
Milling is more dangerous — while it’s possible that a plastic extruder might overheat and catch fire, I’ve already had a (minor) fire with my CNC router, and there’s the added danger of a blade spinning
at 20,000 rpm sending bits of itself, or even your workpiece, flying at you.
A mill or router is necessarily larger and heavier than a 3D printer and consequently more expensive and more difficult to move. It requires a positioning system that can maintain accuracy when encountering resistance, and motors powerful enough to drive it.
Software preparation is also more complex for milling. After drawing the object you wish to make in a CAD or 3D modeling program, it’s necessary to generate toolpaths with computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software. This involves specifying the dimensions and location of the stock material, the dimensions and characteristics of the end mill (cutter), and speeds for the axes and spindle. The tools to do this tend to be complex, and a bit daunting for the first-time user.
From the user’s perspective, CNC milling is a much more complex process than printing. CNC milling does, however, have a significant advantage over 3D printing: the technology is mature. Home 3D printers are improving at a tremendous rate, but there’s often still a lot of tinkering and
experimentation involved in getting a good print.
What Do You Want to Make?
If your interests tend toward larger and more structural creations, go with milling. Also consider that it’s cheaper to work in wood than in plastic, and that you’re likely to get substantially superior results.
On the other hand, making complex 3D objects is a lot more complicated with CNC milling than with a 3D printer. There are free tools for doing 2.5D milling, but CAM software for 3D milling can be very expensive and difficult to use.
Doing 3D work for 3D printing is much easier. You can design your models in a free program like SketchUp or Inventor Fusion, and then export an STL file. Slicing

Special Report
Unlock the Value of Big DataManufacturers are awash in data.
But too often it’s trapped in data silos, and it can’t be leveraged
to help organizations compete in an increasingly complex market landscape.
Manufacturers can use data as a key currency to unlock value to drive better efficiency and productivity, according to a research report from Aberdeen Research.
But they must take three key steps to leverage data to fuel the potential boost to the bottom line:1. Study data management opportunities and challenges2. Pinpoint data management capabilities3. Prioritize data analysis initiatives
When tackling the challenges and opportunities presented by data, leading companies are 89% more likely than followers to see the need to unlock hidden information from big data rather than just controlling large data sets, according to Aberdeen.
“For example, possible supply chain interruption can be found in a supplier’s performance management data, the same way that downtime due to equipment age
or corrosion is hidden in asset performance management data,” the report notes. “Additionally, data on non-conformance can help predict critical issues like loss of productivity and recalls.”
This highl ights the increasing importance of data analysis to help manufacturers access and act on hidden data.
Seven out of 10 companies in the study rely on dashboards and automatic reporting; however, leading companies are 25% more likely than followers to prioritize investments in analytics to support visual discovery, the report notes.
“Cloud and big data technologies help aggregate data sets across disparate functions to overcome data silos,” according to the report. “Predictive analysis and attention to unstructured data, such as behaviors, helps identify emerging issues. Additionally, manufacturing companies can make a difference by identifying where they can get the most payback for their improvement efforts.”
During the second step of unlocking actionable insight from data, leading
companies understand that a data-driven culture isn’t a competition between IT and business users.
Leaders see IT’s job as managing and maintaining a sustainable data infrastructure. Moreover, leaders are 97% more likely than followers to assign importance to IT’s role in data quality and integrity, the report notes.
“Leaders see managers’ and operators’ jobs as managing business opportunities,” according to Aberdeen. “They provide context for how operations can take action against metrics and information.”
Leading companies are 35% more likely than followers to provide users with proactive, problem-solving solutions they can use themselves to react to changes in metrics.
Finally, to be effective, manufacturers must align data analysis initiatives with the overarching business performance goals.
When prioritizing data initiatives, leading companies are:
34% more likely than followers to integrate data systems to support decisions
70% more likely than laggards to optimize processes when best practices are
identified54% more likely to define best practices
within a data-driven framework45% more likely to use big data and
analytics to combine manufacturing data and to support the enterprise platform
41% more likely to train business users in data analysis and 26% more likely to embed analytics in process monitoring and dashboards
27% more likely than followers to increase operational awareness of risk, including by using predictive analytics to provide early warning of critical issues before they evolve to operational failure
“Unlocking the value of data is more than an idea – it is a ‘must have’ component of corporate information strategy,” the report concludes. “By complementing perception, intuition or opinions with facts, manufacturers encourage feedback, questions that clarify strategies and employee participation. When managed effectively, manufacturing data can help companies grow and support the vision for a knowledgeable and more effective organization.”

Jainnher benefits from Taiwan OEMs
Being the hometown of precision machinery, Taichung city manufactures and exports thousands of machine tool equipment every month. Thanks to the cluster of factories, Taiwan machine tool manufactures can outsource most c o m p o n e n t s t o O E M c o m p a n i e s , through which they are able to survive in the global market with competitive technologies and pr ices . Ja innher Machine Co., Ltd., a grinding machine expert that sells products worldwide, is an exact example of this business method.
Jainnher Taichung has over 120 employees and i t s main p roduc ts include centerless, cylindrical, internal, center hole and double spindle grinding machines . Apar t f rom the des ign, finishing and assembling, all product components are outsourced to OEM companies. Jainnher regularly sends its staff to inspect the OEMs manufacturing process to ensure that it's working at the same pace with its own factory.
At the last stage of manufacturing, the main spindles are enhanced by cryogenic treatment followed by fine grinding. This process can only be done in Jainnher's own factory. Sales Manager of Export Dept. Mr. William Lee explains that OEM factories need more time to get the work done because the surface hardness of the spindles reach over HRC62. Insufficient grinding time could lead to embrittlement. Therefore this part must be processed in its own factory to ensure the best quality.
Ja innher ' s gr inding machines , especially centerless grinders, have gained wide popularity in Mainland China and ASEAN region. Since July 2014, Jainnher have exported 40 units to these areas per month on average. Statistics shows 30% growth in 2014 compared to 2013 in the ASEAN region. In Indonesia, Jainnher's high-performance products are widely applied in Japanese cars and motorcycles. Pakistan showed pleasing sales results for centerless, cylindrical, and internal grinding machines last year. Meanwhile, manufacturers of high-precision products in the U.S. demand for Jainnher's grinding machines.
Mainland China is the company’s largest export market, which accounts for 30% of its output, followed by the
ASEAN region and Europe. Mr. William Lee says in 2015 Jainnher expects to further explore and diversify its overseas marke ts by par t ic ipa t ing to more international exhibitions.

At the TIMTOS 2015 trade show; Chain Tail wil l showcase i ts PBN
permanent magnet brake module with clamping shaft design, which can be directly mounted onto servo motors as a space saving measure. A special safety design has been applied to the Z-axis of the machine tools. When servo motors are dismantled for machine maintenance, PBN can stop the Z axis from slipping, and the internal permanent magnet brake can keep holding the load. Because a spring plate links the connection between brake and brake shaft , there is no backlash at the moment of braking. There is no drag torque or noise while the brake shaft is rotating. About 70% of Chain Tail products are custom made. During
the interview, the company spokesman claimed that it aims to provide customers with the most suitable products for their specific applications by modifying installation dimensions or designs.
Chain Tail products are widely applied in the mechanical transmission fields, such as the automation, machine tool, and electric wheelchair sectors. In 2014 YINSH has launched the new axial force sensor which has been developed by their precision locknuts R&D and inspection lab. This device can closely measure the axial force generated by a locknut and therefore can be used to inspect locknuts during spindle assembly to ensure stable quality. This device can also compare and analyze axial force.
All bearings have specification requirements to regulate axial force, but since the tightening torque is influenced by the size and specification of precision locknuts, compatible gaps, bearing types, the brands used, hardness of the spacer ring, surface treatment of the locknut thread and so on, it is difficult to know the precise combination of these factors where the tightening torque achieves the optimal axial force of the bearing. Furthermore it is not easy to fully understand the static rigidity, dynamic rigidity and cutting stability of the spindle. Conventional solutions rely on the experience of repeated assembly and testing procedures, however since manufacturers constantly update spindle components
