DAWSON ELEMENTARY The Dog’s Ear January 2016 Striving for Excellence UIL Academic Champs Dawson Elementary has captured the title of first place District Academic champions for the third straight year. They attribute their success to practice and the support of their teachers who coach them in various events such as spelling, oral reading, math, and writing. Parents also play an important role in student success by helping them study for these events at home and by helping them get home from after school practices. Contest winners this year are as follows: Art for fourth grade, Marlee Parker, 5 th place. The team placed second and also includes, Haley Wheat and Melanie Martinez. The 5 th grade team placed third overall and includes Madison Davis, Natalie Sykes, Tiffany Hall, Paris Sanchez, and Elizabeth Benton. Madison Davis place first in the contest and had a perfect score. This is her second year to receive a perfect score. In chess puzzle for second grade Henlee Brooks won 1 st place, Emma-Jade Guerra won 3 rd , and Brant Boatright placed 6 th . Their team was first overall. Third grade chess puzzle winners were Daniel Keele 2 nd and Ana Harper 6 th . Fourth graders placing include Andrew Hopson, 1 st and Devon Brock 6 th place. The team also included Bryce Bode, and they won 3 rd place. The 5 th grade team took 3 rd as well and includes Jase Elkins, Brytan Petty, and Gabe Hawthorne. Jace took 3 rd individually. In 5 th grade Dictionary Skills, Alexandria Kammerer won 2 nd place, and Jace Elkins, 4 th . The team including Paris Sanchez won 1 st place. The Listening Skills team made up of Cade Onstott, Paris Sanchez, and Alexandria Kammerer won 2 nd place. Onstott took 2 nd and Sanchez placed 6 th . The Maps, Graphs, and Charts team won 2 nd place. Alex Kammerer took 1 st , other team members were Brook Martinez, and Ashlyn Matthews. The Social Studies team won 3 rd overall and includes Kylie Rogers, Paris Sanchez, 4 th place, and Alex Kammerer, 5 th place. The fourth grade music memory team including Andrew Hopson, Tanner Williams, and Haley Wheat won third place team. In number sense, our 4 th grade team took first with every member placing. Andrew Hopson, 1 st , Colby Springer 3 rd , and Rosendo Jaramillo, 4 th . Fifth grader Alexandria Kammerer placed 4 th in number sense. In oral reading , 4 th grader, Marcella Bryan won 3 rd place. Fifth grade oral readers swept the top three places. Maggie Crawford, 1 st , Brooke Martinez, 2 nd , and Cade Onstott, 3 rd . Third grade story teller Andrew Hall won 2 nd place and second grader Henlee Brooks placed 6 th in story telling. Places for ready writing were as follows, third grade, 1 st place, Tamia Valenzuela and 5 th place, Ana Harper. In fourth grade, Colby Springer won 4 th , and Marcella Bryan placed 6 th . All Dawson spelling teams placed in this competition. Third grade placed 3 rd , including Breana Cook, with Tamia Valenzuela winning 2 nd , and Ana Harper, 5 th . In 4 th grade Kassidy Skonetski placed 2 nd . The team won 3 rd and also includes Marcella Bryan, and Rika Bryant. The 5 th graders took 1 st place Important Dates to Remember Fri.
