Letter from the Executive Director and Board President

Debra FeistBoard President

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the board, staff, volunteers and survivors at DAWN, thank you for your heartfelt and much needed support of our mission to end domestic violence. This year has been a year of transition and change for DAWN.

A slowly rebounding economy, fewer resources and increased needs for services have combined to create challenges for all non-profits, including DAWN. The demand for DAWN’s life-saving services skyrocketed in 2010 as more people faced tumultuous and unprecedented economic and social upheaval. We take seriously our responsibilities as one of King County’s leading provider of services for victims of violence and abuse.

While our client needs soared, DAWN’s funding suffered due to the prevailing economic environment. Unfortunately, many of our supporters were unable to donate at prior levels. Our fund raising Gala was down 30% from the previous year and contributions from individuals were down more than 17%.

Even still, the board of directors, staff and volunteers continued to provide passionate leadership and support for the mission of DAWN. We remained deeply committed to eradicating domestic violence and providing the services that restore hope, healing and spirit in the lives of this community’s women and children.

Letter from the Executive Director and Board President, continued

Thanks to service and support from a broad range of individuals and organizations, we have been able to continue to find innovative ways to help survivors move from crisis to confidence. Volunteer time, funds and gifts-in-kind directly enabled DAWN to achieve several milestones in 2010, while building on the foundation of our core strength—providing the critical services and education necessary to foster healthy life transitions and establish independent, violence-free lives.

With generous support from our community, expansion of DAWN’s House, our emergency confidential shelter, began May 5, 2010 and was completed this past April. Capacity was increased by 50%; adding four new bed rooms for families. In addition, the kitchen and laundry room went through a major remodel to accommodate the increase in residents. We are already near full capacity. We are very proud of our new facility; many generous donors have provided beautiful furnishings, appliances, building materials, landscaping, and many volunteer hours to bring this dream to life. Thank you one and all!

Additionally, we were able to restructure our volunteer advocacy training and establish DAWN’s DV Institute, which offers more options to meet training and community education needs such as DV & Economic Justice and Abuse in Later Life. Volunteer options were broadened beyond serving on our crisis line to opportunities to serve throughout the agency: from our crisis line to shelter, as part of the development and administrative teams, and as of our many support groups.

Letter from the Executive Director and Board President, continued

Volunteers now have more support, mentoring, training, available resources, and are fully integrated as members of the DAWN team.

Because of the incredible hours of service contributed by volunteers, we were able to increase our capacity to directly serve survivors and focus more on education and social change, including more legal clinics to serve low-income survivors in need of legal advice.

Finally there are many organizations whose generous contributions made it possible for DAWN services to reach those in need. While there are too many organizations to mention here, we want to acknowledge Griffith Floor & Tile, Washington Multi-Family Housing Association, The Medina Foundation, and Northwest Children’s Fund.

It has been a challenging yet fruitful and wonderfully affirming year and we look forward to sharing it with you.

Warm Regards,

Cheryl BozarthExecutive Director
