KING DAVID
• While Saul was still king, the Philistines were challenging the Israelites. They were led by a warrior named Goliath
• Though Goliath was bigger and stronger, and was armed with better weapons, David declared his faith in God
• David hit Goliath in the forehead with a stone hurled from a sling. Goliath fell dead and David cut off the Philistine’s head with his own sword.
• When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they fled.
• After the death of Saul, al the tribes of Israel proclaimed David as their king
• David made Jerusalem in Judea the capital of his kingdom
• David brought the Ark of the Covenant to a tent he had appointed in Jerusalem
• The Israelites traveled to the place of the Ark often. Its presencein Jerusalem helped unite the people
• Though David was a great king, he was not perfect and he fell into serious sin
• David fell in love with a woman named Bathsheba. She was already married to a soldier named Uriah.
• David ordered that Uriah be put on the front line in battle, where he was killed.
• David married Bathsheba, but God was displeased
• God sent the prophet Nathan to show David his failings
• David repented and vowed to follow God more closely
• David was known for his music and poetry.
• It is believed that he wrote many of the psalms, prayer-songs found in the Old Testament
• During his life, Jesus would have prayed the psalms; they were prayers commonly said by those who practiced Judaism
• Jesus would be called a “Son of David”; the Savior was born into the family of David
• David ruled over Israel for over 40 years
• When he died, he was buried in Jerusalem, the “City of David”
