Ettore Sottsass, the most celebrated designer of his generation and founder of the groundbreaking 1980s design group Memphis, celebrated his 90th birthday in September 2007. To mark the occasion, the Design Museum staged an exhibition explo- ring Sottsass’ remarkable 60-year career and his iconic designs, including glass and ceramics for Alessi and electronic products for Olivetti. The exhibition was the first full scale show of Zaha Hadid’s work in the UK, focusing on the recent extraordinarily productive period in the architect’s work. At the time, Hadid was busy working on projects ranging from masterplans in Singapore and Istanbul, to an opera house in China, a museum in Rome, and a skyscraper in Dubai. She had also re- cently opened two buildings in Germany: a car factory for BMW and the Phaeno Science Centre, for which she was short- listed for the 2006 RIBA Stirling Prize. Deyan Sudjic is Director of the Design Museum in London. Founded in 1989, the Design Museum is the UK’s cultural champion of design and wins internatio-nal acclaim for exhibitions of modern design history and contemporary design. Before joining the Design Museum in August 2006, Deyan was Dean of the Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at Kingston University, visiting profes-sor at the Royal College of

Art and the Academy of Applied Art in Vienna, and the Observer newspaper’s design and architecture writer. He was Director of Glasgow 1999, UK City of Architectu-re, and in 2002 was Director of the Venice Architecture Biennale. From 2000 to 2004 he was Editor of Domus, and Founding Editor of Blueprint magazine from 1983 to 1996. Deyan has published many books on design and architecture. In 2004 Deyan was awarded the Bicentenary Medal of the Royal Society of Arts for the promotion of design, and was made an honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He was made an OBE in 2000.
