Ettore Sottsass, the most celebrated designer of his generation and founder of the groundbreaking 1980s design group Memphis, celebrated his 90th birthday in September 2007. To mark the occasion, the Design Museum staged an exhibition explo- ring Sottsass’ remarkable 60-year career and his iconic designs, including glass and ceramics for Alessi and electronic products for Olivetti. The exhibition was the first full scale show of Zaha Hadid’s work in the UK, focusing on the recent extraordinarily productive period in the architect’s work. At the time, Hadid was busy working on projects ranging from masterplans in Singapore and Istanbul, to an opera house in China, a museum in Rome, and a skyscraper in Dubai. She had also re- cently opened two buildings in Germany: a car factory for BMW and the Phaeno Science Centre, for which she was short- listed for the 2006 RIBA Stirling Prize. Less and More – The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams (Nov 2009 - Mar 2010) The exhibition presented a comprehensive overview of the architect’s work, looking at key moments in his development as well as at major recent projects including the Museum of Modern Literature in Marbach, Germany, the America’s Cup Building in Valencia, Spain, the Neues Museum in Berlin and the Hep- worth Museum in Wakefield, Yorkshire.
