You vs. Train" is a campaign which builds on our work to get the rail safety message across
to children and young people, especially during the school holidays when more youngsters
risk their lives by trespassing on the train lines, unaware of the dangers.
At the heart of the campaign is the story of Tom Hubbard – a young boy who suffered life-
changing injuries in 2014 when he was electrocuted by overhead power cables. Tom suffered
third degree burns across 57% of his body and has been dealing with the serious physical and
psychological consequences ever since.
An additional film, titled ‘Parallel Lines’, shows the impact of trespass on the wider
community. It reminds young people that, even if they’re lucky enough to escape uninjured,
their actions have consequences.
How can you support you vs. Train?
The campaign includes a website, graphics and a consistent set of messages used by all
partners for maximum impact in order to raise awareness of the dangers of the railway
environment and reduce trespass incidents.
Visit the campaign website www.youvstrain.co.uk to download the resources that have been
created to use in schools and within your community to help communicate the importance of
rail safety.
During the summer holidays 2021, your sponsored Police Community Support Officers will be
carrying out increased hi-visibility, targeted patrols at hotspots locations to detect, deter, and
prevent lineside trespass, graffiti, and crime.
If you witness suspicious activity in and around the rail network, please contact us on 101 or
report online at www.northants.police.uk. In an emergency, always call 999.

Force launches new operation to prevent sexual offending as night clubs reopen
Police are launching a new operation to prevent sexual offending in Northamptonshire’s town
centres, as Government restrictions lift and crowds are due to flock back to the county’s
nightclubs.
Operation Kayak begins this Friday, July 23 when non-uniformed officers will start patrolling
hotspot areas of the county’s towns, sending a strong message to potential offenders:
Predatory behaviour will not be tolerated in Northamptonshire.
Officers on Operation Kayak patrols will seek to identify those displaying predatory or
suspicious behaviour like loitering, leering, sexual harassment and inappropriate touching and
when they see it, they will act quickly by engaging with the individual, which may involve a
simple conversation or an arrest if any offences have been committed.
Detective Superintendent Paul Rymarz, the Force’s Head of Crime said: “Northamptonshire
Police is committed to ensuring our streets are safe and Operation Kayak is intended to help
do this by making the county a hostile place for those intent on committing sexual offences.
“This proactive approach sends out a clear message – we are committed to making the
streets safer and this is just one way in which we are working to tackle any unacceptable
behaviour.”

Op Sceptre is Northamptonshire Police's campaign to tackle knife crime. While the vast
majority of people don't carry knives or get involved with knife crime, we are working hard,
with partner agencies, to tackle the knife crime offences that occur and to help prevent them
from happening in the first place.
Knife crime is any crime that involves a knife whether it is used or not and some examples
include:
• Carrying a knife
• Threatening someone with a knife
• Intending to hurt someone with a knife
• Using a knife to injure or kill someone
• Thieves carrying knives during a robbery or burglary
• The involvement of a knife or knives in gang-related offences
• Someone under 18 trying to buy a knife
The idea that carrying a knife for protection is not a good one. It could end up being used
against you potentially causing you a serious injury or even death and you could end up doing
the same to someone else. If you don't carry a knife these things can't happen in the first
place and you, and those around you, are safer.
Even carrying a knife in a public place can result in a maximum prison sentence of four
years, depending on the circumstances, and there is a minimum sentence of six months if you
are found carrying one more than once. Getting a criminal record can affect the rest of your
life, from job prospects to travelling to certain countries.
People who use a knife to injure someone face long prison sentences - ultimately life
sentences for murder and in some Section 18 GBH offences. Also, people who are present
when someone is injured or killed by a knife by someone else can be prosecuted and
potentially be sent to prison for murder - this is called 'joint enterprise'.
It's just not worth it!
If you are worried about someone you know carrying a knife, want to talk to someone about
knife crime or ask advice please call 101 - always call 999 in an emergency such as when a
crime is in progress and/or someone is in immediate danger. Calling with information about
knife crime may feel hard, but there are harder calls. If you have information about knife
crime, you don’t have to call the police. With our 100% anonymity guaranteed, you can speak
up with confidence that no one else will know, call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111

Slow down, save lives - that is the simple message as the volume of traffic on our roads is set
to increase with the full lifting of all Covid-19 restrictions in England.
Officers from across Northamptonshire Police will be taking part in a three-week national
campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding, which runs from Monday (July 19)
until Sunday, August 8.
As part of the National Policing Chiefs’ Council #SlowDownSaveLives operation, officers will be
out in force on our county’s roads looking for those road users who are driving at excessive
speeds.
In the first six months of 2020, the Force has detected 41,799 speeding offences, with a
record number of 9,787 drivers caught exceeding the limit in June. The top excess speeds
recorded increased from 129mph in January to 155mph in June.
With speeding one of the main contributors in collisions and one of the fatal four driving
offences, this campaign aims to reduce the number of people who are killed or seriously
injured on the UK’s roads.
Safer Roads Operations Manager, Matt O’Connell, said: “It’s always disappointing, despite all
the campaigns and warnings about speeding, that so many drivers still choose to drive at
excess or inappropriate speeds.
“Speeding kills – it is as simple as that. It is one of the four biggest dangers while driving and
the difference of even just a few miles per hour can be the difference between life and death.
“It is hard to understand why so many people continue to put their own life and the lives of
others at risk by speeding when the consequences of getting it wrong are so extreme and can
leave families devastated by the loss of loved ones.”
The first week of the campaign will focus on educating drivers of the risks to both themselves
and other road users of driving at irresponsible and dangerous speeds and to encourage
everyone to obey speeds limits.
This will be followed by two further weeks of enforcement. Anyone caught flouting the law will
be reported for the offences and depending on the excessive speed recorded, drivers could
receive a fine, have points added to their licence or be banned from driving.

Modern Day Slavery - Northamptonshire Police has today (Thursday, June 17) launched a
major campaign to raise awareness of modern slavery, with the help of funding from
Northamptonshire’s Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.
The powerful campaign includes a 60-second animation and a suite of powerful visuals and
messages, aiming to raise awareness of what are a growing problem. It encourages people to
look beyond a seemingly ‘normal’ situation to see the real person and their potential
predicament.
The strapline “it’s probably nothing, but….” has been chosen to ‘nudge’ people into
reporting signs – however insignificant they seem. The information provided could be the
missing piece of the jigsaw which enables officers to take swift action to safeguard victims
and bring offenders to justice.

Did you know that 25% of burglaries in Northamptonshire happen because burglars get in
through an unlocked door or window?
Operation Crooked is Northamptonshire Police’s campaign to tackle residential burglaries.
In the past two years we have reduced burglaries across the county by 47%.
But burglaries are still happening and we need your help.
Detective Superintendent Paul Rymarz, said: “Let me be clear that the only thing that causes
burglaries is burglars and our officers are doing everything they can to put these people
behind bars, evidenced by the 47% reduction we have seen in the past two years.
“In an ideal world, having to consider crime prevention tools to stop your home from being
broken into wouldn’t be necessary but the reality is that there are shameless people out there
who will look to burgle your house and steal items that you have worked hard to buy.
“However, research shows that burglars generally don’t like to work too hard to get into
someone’s property, preferring to look for places they believe are an easy target. If I can give
one piece of advice it would be not to give them an easy opportunity – an unlocked door or
window for example”
Tips to prevent your home from being burgled:
Always close and lock windows and doors when leaving the property - even a small open
window could entice a burglar
Use window limiters to allow air in instead of keeping windows fully open, even when you’re at
home
Keep car and house keys out of sight and away from windows and doors
If you’re in the garden, make sure windows and doors at the front of the property are secure
Do not leave valuables on display through windows
Ensure that any side entrance is secure, locked and not easy to climb over, even when
someone is at home
Keep bins away from windows when they’re not being used as they can be used as a climbing
aid for burglars
Going on holiday? Make arrangements to make sure the house appears occupied whilst it’s
unoccupied. Put lights on a timer or ask a neighbour to come and pick up mail and draw
curtains. Don’t advertise being on holiday on social media
CCTV and doorbell footage often helps our detectives identify burglars. Sign up to
Northamptonshire Neighbourhood Alert to register your property as having CCTV
which could help us to detect crime in your area. If you see any suspicious activity in
your area, contact us on 101 or report it online at www.northants.police.uk/ro. If
