Dating and Violence and STDs Pg Pg Pg Dating and Violence Dating violence can take many forms, including abuse and rape. What is abuse? Abuse is when one person treats another person in a harmful or offensive way. Dating and Violence: What types of abuse are there? Verbal Abuse Physical Abuse Sexual Abuse Who can be a victim of abuse? Anybody can be a victim of abuse. Male or female Young or old But no one deserves to be abused. Dating and Violence When is abuse the victims fault? Abuse is NEVER the victims fault. However, victims will often blame themselves. Why is that? What is verbal abuse? Verbal abuse is the use of words to hurt, intimidate, or dominate another person. Manipulations is another form of verbal abuse. What is manipulation? Manipulation is the act of trying to control someones actions and opinions by playing on their fears and desires. What is physical abuse? Physical abuse is physical mistreatment to cause bodily harm to another person. Physical abused includes being punched, kicked, shoved, or slapped. Severe physical abuse can lead to serious injury or even death. What is sexual abuse? Sexual abuse is unwanted and repeated sexual actions or activity that is forced on another person. This includes forcing someone to have sex against his or her will It also includes doing sexual things to someone who cant or is too afraid to say No. The use of alcohol and drugs increases the chances of what in relationships? It can increase the chance of abuse in relationship. It can increase the chance of rape too. Who is abuse performed by? Most abuse is performed by people who claim to care about the victims. What is rape? Rape is any sexual activity forced on someone else, including unwanted sexual intercourse, oral sex, or anal sex. Rape can also be called sexual assault. Both males and females can be victims of rape. What is date rape? Date rape is when someone you are dating rapes you. What is acquaintance rape? It is when the victim knows the attacker. What percentage of rape victims are under the age of 18? 40% Why is that number that high, when there is a greater population of people above 18? How can a person prevent date rape and acquaintance rape? 1.Do not drink alcohol or use drugs. 2.Do not go places alone. 3.Make sure your parents know where you are and how long you will be there. 4.Carry money for the a pay phone or carry a cell phone. 5.Avoid rooms that could put you in an uncomfortable situation. What should a person do if they are raped? 1. Go to the emergency room, immediately. 2. Dont change your clothes or shower. 3. Tell your parents. 4. Contact the police. 5. Seek counseling. What is a sexually transmitted disease? A sexually transmitted disease is an infection spread from one person to another person by sexual contact. One in four sexually active teens will be infected with a sexually transmitted disease this year. Can you tell if someone has an STD? No! You cant tell if someone has an STD by looking at them. Most STDs have little to no symptoms. The ones that do have symptoms, usually have visual effects that take place in the genital area. Can you get a STD through sexual contact with an infected person? Yes you can get an STD even if a condom is used, and some STDs cant be cured. What are the three main things that can cause sicknesses specifically STDs? STIs and STDs can be caused bacteria, viruses, and protozoan. What can you tell me about a bacterial infection? A bacterial infection is relatively easy to cure if caught early. What can you tell me about a viral infection? Viral infections cannot be cured with medicines. Your body has to form antibodies to fight off viral infections. Some viral infections cannot be killed once inside the body. What can you tell me about protozoa? A protozoan is a single celled organism. What is the four fluids that can pass STDs? Blood Semen Vaginal Fluids Saliva What is HPV? HPV is the human papillomavirus and it causes genital warts. Transmission: contact with infected skin or open sores, can be spread even no sores are present. Symptoms: Frequently none; warts on the genitals. May lead to cervical cancer in women. Not treatable or curable. What is HIV? HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It is a virus that attacks the human immune system. Makes the body vulnerable to infections that the body could normally fight easily. HIV is the virus that leads and turns into AIDS. HIV can be spread through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. HIV A person can be a carrier of HIV, without having AIDS. A carrier is a person who appears healthy but can pass the disease on to others. A person may be infected with HIV for ten years or more before starting to show symptoms of AIDS. A blood test is the only way of determining whether a person is infected with HIV. What are T-Cells? T-cells are a type of white blood cell that is attacked by HIV. What is AIDS? AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency Syndrome. People with AIDS are more likely to get unusual forms of cancer and infection. AIDS is the last stage of HIV infection. Patients who have AIDS eventually die as a result of the disease. What are genital warts? They are painless growths found on or around the genital and anal areas. An estimated 1,000,000 Americans are infected with genital warts each year. There are 100 strains of HPV. Caused by HPV What is trichomoniasis? It is one of the most common STDs and it causes a genital tract infection. It is caused by protozoan. Transmitted by contact with infected bodily fluids. Curable with anti parasitic drugs. What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)? PID is an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and/or ovaries. It is the most common serious infection in females. What are pubic lice? They are tiny parasites that live in the pubic hair and survive by living on blood. Sometimes referred to as crabs. Cause intense itching. Can be caused by coming into contact with infected person, infected clothing, or infected bedding. Treated with medicated shampoo and prescription lotion. What is chlamydia? Chlamydia is a bacterial disease that produces an infection similar to gonorrhea. Can cause PID and infertility in women. Often has NO symptoms. Pregnant women can pass chlamydia to an unborn baby. Diagnosed through a lab test testing the blood. Curable with antibiotics. What is genital herpes? Genital herpes is a viral infection (HSV types 1 and 2). It causes painful sores on or around the genital and anal areas. Can be transmitted by coming into contact with infected skin or sores. Can be spread no sores are present. Not curable. What is syphilis? Syphilis is a bacterial infection that causes damage to organ over time if left untreated (nervous system). It causes ulcers in the genital area Causes a rash on the bottom of feet and palms of hands in the secondary more advanced stage. Syphillis In last stages (if left untreated) it can cause mental disorders, heart problems, brain damage, blindness, and eventually death. Contact with infected skin or open sores is the way it is spread. Can be treated with antibiotics in first and second stage. Once it reaches third stage no treatment is available. What is Hepatitis B? Hepatitis B is a viral infection. It affects the liver. Symptoms are fatigue, abdominal pain, vomiting, joint pain, and loss of appetite. It is carried by blood, saliva, semen, and vaginal fluids. Pregnant women can pass the disease to the baby during delivery. There is no cure for this disease. However, adults who acquire it can usually recover. Yet, sometimes there are lifelong health problems caused by it. What is gonorrhea? It is a curable infection (caused by _____?_____)that affects the genital tract, the mouth, and the rectum. Often no symptoms. If left untreated in cause sterility and infertility. It can also cause problems with joints and heart if left untreated. It is transmitted through bodily fluids, especially semen and vaginal fluids. Infertility / Sterility What is sterility? It means men are unable to reproduce because something is wrong with their reproductive system or their male sex cells. What is infertility? It means women are unable to reproduce because something is wrong with their reproductive system or their female sex cells. What can you do to prevent STDs or STIs? Only way to prevent STIs and STDs is to avoid sexual activity. ABSTINENCE! What can you do to reduce the risk of contracting an STDs or STIs? 1.Avoid sex with multiple partners. 2.Use a condom when you are sexually active. 3.Get a hepatitis B immunization shot. 4.Become familiar with symptoms of STIs. 5.Know your partners sexual history. **** Continued: Contracting an STDs or STIs 6. Seek medical help immediately if any unusual symptoms occur. 8.If you find yourself infected notify present and past partners. 9.Avoid all sexual activity while being treated for an STI or STD.
