In Week 7 of term 2, Stage 1 held their Project-Based Learning Showcase to conclude 7 weeks of very hard work!
We kicked off our unit with a walking excursion around Erskineville in week 2. We visited 5 local landmarks and used our observations to write and publish books entitled “Why I Love Erskineville” based on the work of Bronwyn Bancroft over the following 5 weeks. We also collected data on how different groups of people interact with the local area, and created maps of Erskineville so that our STEMShare Ozobots could travel around the local community.
THE DEADLY KIDS AWARD
Congratulations to Diarra a proud recipient of the
2019 Deadly Kids Award.
The Deadly Kids Awards is a successful initiative
that has been implemented by the Department
of Education since 2009. This award recognises
the academic achievement, student leadership,
citizenship, cultural development, sporting
prowess and model behaviour in class of
Indigenous students in the Sydney Region.
Well done Diarra!
Y3-6 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL - DAY ONE
FRIDAY 2 AUGUST
ERKO BAND NEWSLETTER
This term the bands have received new music to work on. Senior band is learning ‘Oye Como Va’ and ‘Mana Mana’ (which you may remember as the banana boat jingle!) as well as continuing to work on ‘La Rejoissance.’
Intermediate band have started ‘Roman juggernaut’ and will be receiving another new piece in the next few weeks. It’s a great idea to practice the scale that fits the key signature of each piece before you practice it.
Training band are working on learning different rhythms – using clapping and singing/speaking to help them. We are zooming through the book and I’m very happy with how they are sounding.
Practice tip from Edward: Always try to make your best sound when you practice – even if you are playing long notes or scales.
NSW INTERSCHOOL’S CHAMPIONSHIPS
This year we doubled our snow sports team, with Mimi P and Polly M competing for Erko.
Both girls competed in two events, Alpine and Ski Cross, at Perisher. The girls were amazing, particularly in the Alpine event which was run at night under lights in a blizzard (and foggy goggles only added to the degree of difficulty). The girls were amazing and did the school proud. They had fun, made friends and skied so very well. There were many schools competing from around NSW, some with squads of 160 participants. The girls, although nervous did their very best and placed well.
Sadly after 14 years at Erko this is our final year, we are keen for the school to continue competing so if anyone is interested I am happy to hand over team manager duties.
The City of Sydney is considering a proposal to introduce a marked pedestrian crossing in Ashmore Street, Erskineville, at Bridge Street.
Any further information about the proposal, please contact [email protected] or Tel: 9265 9333

UPCOMING P&C MEETINGS
Meetings are held in the School Library, entry via the Bridge St gate.
Tuesday 13 August (Week 4)
Tuesday 10 September (Week 8)
Please drop in to a meeting when you can – all welcome! To vote at a meeting you need to have become a member of the P&C prior to the close of the previous meeting. You can join anytime online, via the P&C section of the school website.
Please arrive at 6:45pm for a prompt 7pm start.
What’s on the agenda for the next meeting?
As well as our usual discussion topics and updates including the Principal’s Report, the August meeting will cover:
- More details about Erko Berzerko, share your ideas or get involved
- The process for deciding how the P&C should spend our hard-earned fundraising dollars. We will be calling for ideas at our September meeting, so the August meeting is a chance to find out more about our project proposal and voting process.
PRE-LOVED UNIFORM CO-OP Thank you!
Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the uniform co-op last week.
The next co-op will be held on Wednesday of Week 2 next term.
Remember that donations of clean, undamaged uniforms can be left at the office any time, or save them up to exchange for a voucher at the next co-op.
If you have school shirts with stains or holes, we want those too! Please drop them in the box on the stage in the Brown Hall to be upcycled into jam jar covers for Erko Berzerko.
New, ultra-effective Big-A fans have been installed in the Brown Hall, OSHC (Gowrie) Hall and the Library, replacing the old fans and ready to help these spaces cool come summer.
In addition, insulation has been added to the Heritage Building at the front of the school, the Library Building, and the K-2 Building, helping keep classroom spaces cool in summer (and warm in winter) for all kids in all classrooms.
These improvements complement the airconditioning, heating and solar panels funded by the P&C, helping to improve classroom amenity in the most energy-efficient way possible.
Huge thanks to the small but dedicated group of parents who worked to secure a Community Building Partnership Grant to fund these upgrades, and to arrange all aspects of the installation. Thanks Tanya Holloway, Juannola Troy and David Hetherington for all your efforts.

With less than 3 months until the big day, there’s lots of preparation underway
‘DROP DAYS’ FOR YOUR QUALITY
BOOKS, TOYS & BRIC-A-BRAC
Our first Drop Day will be held as part of the next working bee on Sunday 25 August, so get ready to bring in your good quality clean toys, books, bric-a-brac, homewares, jewellery etc.
Unlike previous years, there will be nowhere to leave these donations at school outside of the Drop Days, so if you can’t make it this time, keep an eye out for extra Drop Day dates in future.
To keep our donations manageable and sellable, there are a few things we can’t accept:
• anything broken, dirty, or missing pieces
• clothes, shoes, bedding or towels
• carseats
• bikes
• electrical items
• oversized items (no one wants to carry something huge around the fair all day)
• books with torn/missing pages or scribble
• toys that use button batteries
• baby teething toys
Please think about what you’d buy yourself or give to a friend: if you wouldn’t give it to a mate then don’t donate!
YOUR DONATIONS CAN HELP
Our Erko Made craft stall, Plant Stall and Sweet Little Erko jam stall need your donations of:
• 100% cotton fabric, A4 size or bigger
• Jam jars with metal lids, 300ml or smaller
• School shirts that are stained or ripped • Ceramic ramekins, cups and mugs that could
make new homes for cute succulents
These specific items can be popped in the marked boxes on the Brown Hall stage at any time.
THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Our wonderful stall leaders will need help on the day of the fair, and in the lead-up and pack-up.
If you can help, complete our easy online form and let us know how you’re interested in getting involved.
We are also looking for volunteers with specific skills to be part of the awesome Erko Berzerko entertainment crew. If you can help with any of these, please get in touch with Jo (0407 771 724) or Kate (0412 421 824):
• Audio operator and assistants to run the
sound desk for our main stage entertainment,
preferably with experience in managing sound
for live music performances.
• DJs to provide tunes for the rides and activity
areas.
• Roving entertainers such as magicians, stilt-
walkers, jugglers and other performers to
mingle with fairgoers.
The Erko Made craft stall leaders are keen to see the stall bursting with handmade products from talented EPS parents, but stock is looking a little short this year so Amy (0414 430 159) and Sally (0422 294 989) would love hear from anyone keen to donate handmade items or help with sewing and other crafty skills – if you’re new to Erko Berzerko and not sure what types of crafts to create, have a chat with Amy and Sal and they can suggest items that have been hot sellers in the past.
If you have any other ideas, questions or you’d like to help but you’re not sure how, get in touch with our general Berzerko coordinator, Kristy on 0403 697 117 or email [email protected].
