The Solution TST engaged with Narrative Science as part of our Data Storytelling for Good initiative. As a result, TST expects that 25-30% of the time once spent on data analysis meetings, between TST Teachers, Coaches, and Principals, can now be spent on substantive topics. For example, identifying key levers of change and developing strong action plans to foster staff culture and student learning. We first worked with TST's Executive Director, Pallavi Abraham, to understand metrics driving performance and decision-making. As an organization, they work to measure and improve teacher retention, school staff culture and programmatic effectiveness through twice a year surveys aligned with the UChicago 5Essentials System. TST uses Tableau to visualize the survey data. They previously were engaging in a manual process to gather benchmark values for each school and format individual reports for all of their stakeholders. Through a series of sessions with the Narrative Science team, three areas of improvement were identified. Quill, our product that puts stories in Tableau dashboards, provides teachers and other stakeholders with automatically generated narratives explaining their data-driven visualizations. Additionally, our technical experts were able to save valuable hours by using a combination of existing and custom code to automate the teams data pulls. Finally, the team collaborated on new, impactful dashboards which utilized new data sources, enhanced visualizations, and streamlined reporting. © Narrative Science 2019. All rights reserved. CASE STUDY Case Study Non-Profit | Education Data Storytelling for Good supports teachers to have a lasting impact on their schools Overview Teachers Supporting Teachers (TST) is a non-profit organization based in Chicago. Their mission is to mobilize and support teacher leaders to have a lasting impact in their schools. Research has shown that teachers are the primary influence on student achievement. However, half of all teachers leave within the first 5 years and are 50% more likely to leave students in urban environments. This teacher attrition costs the country $7 billion annually. TST works to ensure that every student has access to excellent education by working to retain a school's best teachers. Though there are many factors involved in teacher attrition, a lack of meaningful leadership opportunities is a major reason teachers are leaving urban schools. A staggering 92% of teachers wish there were more opportunities to further their careers and professional skills while staying in the classroom. They believe that in order to address this issue, we must invest in teacher leaders. By empowering the best people, those individuals will remain in the classroom and create a school-wide culture of learning and student achievement.
