Introduction

General Cabling Considerations

Before designing the backbone and horizontalcabling in your Data Center, there are severalfactors to consider:

• ScalabilityCalculate the required life expectancy ofthe cabling infrastructure by determiningcurrent and future requirements for datatransmission between functional areas of theData Center. Ensure ample space to supportcurrent and future number of ports, serversand switches.

• Flexibility andManageabilityClarify how frequently youwill need tomakemoves, adds and changes, and if youanticipate needing to reconfigure functionalareas of the Data Center. Also, determinecabling distances and limitations fromone functional area to another and ensureample pathway space to reroute or addmore cabling.

• AvailabilityDetermine required uptime for the DataCenter and establish level of redundancyfor cabling uplinks, power, and cooling.Determine overall level of security forequipment in the Data Center.

• Total Cost of OwnershipDetermine current and future cost persquare foot of the Data Center based onall scalability, flexibility, manageabilityand availability requirements.

Each of these elements will have a role indetermining the design of each of thefunctional areas of a Data Center and thecabling products selected.

Your Data Center is more than a space that simply houses servers and network equipment –it is a system. The term “system” is defined as “a set of interacting or interdependent entities, realor abstract, forming an integrated whole.” Within the Data Center, the various entities that makeup the systemwork together to protect and manage both current and future equipment, the datatransmitted, and the thousands of connections between servers and switches and the outlying areasof the network. All of these entities are interrelated and connected by the structured cabling system,which designers and end-users are striving to design for better scalability, flexibility, manageability,availability and lower total cost of ownership. Belden understands that designing the Data Centerstructured cabling system is a complex and often confusing task with many options to weigh andconsider, and we’re here to help. That is why we’ve developed this guide as a living document,adding more configurations over time.

Functional Area

The TIA-942 Telecommunications InfrastructureStandard for Data Centers addresses cablinginfrastructure in the Data Center and definesspecific functional areas to help determinethe placement of cabling, components andequipment. Following TIA-942 for functionalarea layout is the first step in establishing awell-designed cabling infrastructure foryour Data Center.

• Entrance RoomThe entrance room is the location for accessprovider equipment, demarcation points andinterface with other campus locations.

• Main Distribution Area (MDA)

TheMDA houses themain cross-connectand the core routers and switches for thecorporate LAN.

• Horizontal Distribution Area (HDA)

The HDA houses cross-connects and activeequipment (LAN, SAN, KVM switches) forconnecting to the EDA(s).

• Zone Distribution Area (ZDA)

The optional ZDA acts as a consolidationpoint within the Horizontal Cabling runbetween the HDA and EDA(s).

• Equipment Distribution Area (EDA)

The EDA is where cabinets and rackshouse end equipment (servers) andwhereHorizontal Cabling from the HDA isterminated at patch panels.

• Backbone Cabling and Horizontal Cabling

BackboneCabling provides connectionsbetween the entrance room,MDAandHDA.Horizontal Cabling provides connectionbetween theHDAand EDA, including the ZDA.

To connect the main core routers and switchesin the MDA to the end equipment located inthe EDA(s), cabling can be designed in varioustopologies, each with its own benefits anddisadvantages.

In a centralized switching topology, BackboneCabling from the MDA runs to switches inthe HDA(s), which connect to the EDA(s) viaHorizontal Cabling. This topology can alsodeploy a ZDA within the Horizontal Cabling.In a distributed topology, the MDA connectsdirectly to the EDA(s) via Horizontal Cabling,eliminating the HDA. To determine whichtopology is best for your specific Data Centersituation, there are several factors to consider:

• Number of ports deployed in the EDA(s)Small Data Centers may not require HDA(s),whereas large number of EDA ports may bemore easily managed in an HDA.

• Distance limitations to reach eachEDA from theMDAMultiple HDAsmay be required to reachEDA(s) in larger Data Centers.

• Cabling capacity of pathwaysto each functional areaAmple pathway capacitymust be availableto converge Horizontal Cabling from EDA(s)to a single HDA.

• Physical space available forpatch panels in the HDAPhysical spacemust be available to locateseveral patch panels in close proximityto switches.

• Level of security and protection requiredfor core switches and serversThe use of a centralized switching topologyin an HDA can limit access to core switches intheMDA and servers in the EDA(s).

• Frequency of moves, adds, and changesMaking frequentmoves, adds, and changescan bemore difficult in a distributedtopologywhere several switches arespread out in EDA(s).

In this topology, Backbone Cabling from theMDA connects to switches in the HDA. Allcabling is centralized in one cross-connectin the HDA and distributed from the HDA tomultiple EDA(s) or rows. This scenario uses athree-connector channel where HorizontalCabling runs from the EDA patch panels to

the HDA patch panels. The cabling from eachswitch in the HDA terminates on patch panelsthat mirror the switch ports. Each switchpatch panel (Equipment Field) is then cross-connected to a second patch panel (CablingField) that mirrors patch panel portsin each EDA.

Benefits of Centralized Cross-connect

• Enables permanent connections to switchesso that sensitive ports are never touched.

• Improves flexibility andmanageabilitywith all moves, adds, and changesmade atthe patch panels in the cross-connect.

• Any switch can be connected to anyequipment location.

• Centralized cross-connect can be placedanywhere in the Data Center to reservepremium cooling space for active equipment.

• Optimizes cabinet utilization by reservingcabinet space for servers.

• Keeps equipment secure if necessary.

• The cross-connect can use eithermodularpatch panels or IDC (Insulation DisplacementConnection) blocks.

Disadvantages ofCentralized Cross-connect

• May require longer copper cable runsto EDA(s) in large Data Centers.

• Requires a greater number of terminationsand patch panels.

• Requires ample pathway space to convergecabling from EDA(s) to HDA.

• Requiresmore space to accommodatepatch panels.

Centralized Cross-connect with a ZDA

While not widely deployed, a ZDA can beused in the Horizontal Cabling from the HDAto the EDA(s). This scenario uses a four-connectorchannel where either one or both patch panelsof the cross-connect are located within a ZDA(interconnect) or a ZCA (cross-connect). The useof a ZDA means that functional areas can beeasily reconfigured within the Data Center, andcross-connects can be located in completelyseparate areas for maximumsecurity and cooling efficiency. On the otherhand, the use of a four-connector channeland ZDA requires the maximum number ofterminations/connectors and patch panels.

Considerations for cabling in the ZDAinclude the following:

• Howmany copper and fiber portsare required in the ZDA?

• The performance ofminimally compliantconnectivity if horizontal cabling betweenZDA and HDA is less than15meters (49 ft).

In this topology, the Backbone Cablingfrom the MDA is connected to switches inmultiple HDA(s) located within an EDA or row,essentially locating network equipment closerto the EDA(s). This scenario uses two-connectorchannels where Horizontal Cabling runs fromthe EDA patch panels to the HDA patch panels.To connect a new server to the network, theEDA patch panel port is connected to theswitch port.

Benefits of PartiallyCentralized Switching

• Minimizes distances of copper cablingruns in larger Data Centers.

• Reduces number of terminationsand patch panels.

• Reduces amount of required pathway space.

• Patch panels and switches can be located inadjacent racks/cabinets.

Disadvantages of PartiallyCentralized Switching

• Reduces security and efficient use ofpremium cooling space by eliminatingability to locate single HDA anywhere inthe Data Center.

• Reducesmanageability withmoves, adds,and changesmade at patch panels in eachrow vs. one central location.

• Reduces flexibility because any switchcannot be easily connected to anyequipment location.

• Reduces scalability because unused switchports in one row cannot be easily allocatedfor another equipment row.

One-connector Channel withPatch Panels Only in the HDA

Another connection scenario for this topologyincludes a one-connector channel where patchpanels are located only in the HDA. Switchesconnect to patch panels in the HDA, whichconnect directly to equipment in the EDA.This connection scenario may be used insmaller applications with few equipmentports, but where isolating sensitive switchports is still desired. One benefit is that themounting rail in the server enclosures could beused 100% for servers since no patch panelsare used in the EDA. However the permanentcabling deployed in the horizontal limitsthe flexibility.

Point-to-Point Connection Scenario

The partially centralized topology can alsoinclude a point-to-point connection scenariowhere switches are located in the HDA separatefrom the servers in the EDA, but no cross-connect or inter-connect is deployed. This optionis the least expensive cabling option as it requiresonly long patch cords that connect directlyfrom the switch to the server, with no patchpanels required. However, the point-to-pointscenario makes for difficult moves, adds, andchanges, and slack management. This scenariois also a poor return on investment becausenew patch cords lengths are required whena new server is added, and patch cords arediscarded when servers are decommissioned.

In this topology, the Backbone Cabling fromthe MDA is connected directly to switcheswithin each cabinet of the EDA, essentiallyeliminating the use of an HDA.

Benefits of Distributed Topology

• Reduces cabling complexity.

• Lowers cabling costs.

• Reduces amount of required pathway space.

• Ideal for situations where one specific areaof the networkmust be separately and/orsecurely controlled.

• Potentially better ROI if planning to useextremely high bandwidth applications inthe near future (40 Gb/s or 100 Gb/s).

Disadvantages of Distributed Switching

• Requires costly switches to support portsin each equipment cabinet.

• Higher initial investment innetwork equipment.

• Requires touching sensitive switch portsduringmoves, adds, and changes.

• Reducesmanageability and flexibilitywithmoves, adds, and changesmadewithin each cabinet.

• Reduces scalability because unused switchports in one EDA are not easily allocated foruse in another.

• More difficult to conductmaintenance onswitches (i.e., firmware updates) since theyare distributed inmany locations.

As the amount of data and storage requiredcontinues to increase, Data Center managersare looking to implement faster backup andretrieval speeds, better scalability to add morestorage, and overall better flexibility andmanageability. As a result, network storage isnow being moved away from other servers toa separate network of its own, known as theSAN. The SAN is strictly dedicated to transmit-ting large amounts of data between serversand storage devices such as disk arrays, tapelibraries, and optical jukeboxes. This is mostoften accomplished using fiber cross-connector inter-connect technology for maximumdata transfer rates.

The use of a centralized SAN cross-connectoffers the following benefits:

• Enables permanent connections to switchesso that sensitive ports are never touched.

• Improves flexibility andmanageability withall moves, adds, and changesmade at thefiber patch panels in the cross-connect.

• Any switch can be connected to anyequipment location.

• SAN cross-connect can be placed anywherein the Data Center for improved securitywith all switch ports mirrored on fiberpatch panels.

Cabling Considerations for the SAN

When allocating space and designing cablingand connectivity for the SAN, there are manyfactors and options to consider.

• Ensure plenty of space for scalabilityby determining the number of serversconnected to the SAN both now andin the future.

• When deciding between a cross-connector inter-connect, determine the frequencyofmoves, adds, and changes and levelof security required.

• When selecting cabling and connector type,and terminationmethod, determine amountof bandwidth required, cabling distancelimitations, return loss budget for theapplication, and level of expertise toconnectorize and install fiber.

Pre-terminated Solutions

For easy, quick, and reliable deployment andreconfigurations in the SAN, pre-terminatedsolutions are an ideal choice. These connectormodules feature multiple pre-terminated fiberconnectors on one side that transition to oneplug-and-go MPO connector on the other.Pre-terminated solutions can provide thefollowing benefits in a SAN environment:

• Faster overall deployment.

• No fiber connectorization expertise required.

• Fast and easymoves, adds, and changes withplug-and-go application.

• Easy slackmanagement andprotection of fibers.

• High density formore space and scalability.

The following Data Center cabling configurationsrepresent typical layouts often encounteredin Data Centers, but they are not necessarilyconnected together within the same DataCenter. The information presented in thesesamples is intended to help the designer of thecabling infrastructure choose the right Beldenproducts to optimize Data Center scalability,flexibility, manageability, availability and lowertotal cost of ownership. Belden can work withcustomers to design alternative configurationsusing the same components to address specificData Center needs.

The configurations detailed on the followingpages include:

• Partially Centralized Inter-connect in a672-port HDA.

• Centralized Cross-connect in a 672 x 672-port HDA.

• EDAwith 96 Copper Ports from the HDAand 48 Fiber Ports from SAN.

• Cross-connect Cabling for a 384 X 720-port SAN.

More configurations will be added over time.

Cable Installation andRouting Guidelines

• Using back-to-back vertical managers withhigh-density fingers in the back providesintuitive routing by better guiding the cables.

• A bundle size of 12 cables is the optimumvertical manager fill ratio. See calculationtables on the following page for capacity.

• Cables should be inserted in a specific orderfor proper management:– When cabling enters the rack fromunder-floor cable pathways, bundles ofcables intended for the upper patchpanels should be routed first. Thesecables should be placed at the bottomof the channel and then connected.Layers of bundles are then laid in anorderly manner on top of each otherwith cables connected to patch panelsrouted from the upper part to lowerpart of the rack.

– When cabling enters the rack fromoverhead cable pathways, bundles ofcables intended for the lower patchpanels should be routed first. Thesecables should be placed at the bottomof the channel and then connected.Layers of bundles are then laid in anorderly manner on top of each otherwith cables connected to the patchpanels routed from the lower part tothe top of the rack.

• Managing patch cords from both sides ina patch panel (ports 1-12 and 13-24)facilitates patch cord dressing and allowsbetter visibility to the port labeling.

• Whenever possible, populate patch cords inthe patch panels by progressing from theouter ports toward the center.

Four Simple Rules for Optimum PatchCordManagement

• Cable slackmust never be left hanging loosein the channel. This can cause “bunching” ofthe cords at the bottom.

• Always use Velcro ties to guide patch cordsand manage slack.

• Always use the shortest cord available forthe connection.

• Create patching zones between CablingDistribution and Equipment fields.

This example demonstrates how to cable a672 x 672-port HDA using a centralized cross-connect. The switch patch panels (EquipmentField) located in the center of each rack bothcontain 14 24-port patch panels for a total of 672ports thatmirror switch ports. Those patch panelsare then cross-connected to patch panels (CablingField) located in the top and bottom of the racks,whichmirror patch panel ports in each EDA.

•Number of ports in each EDA.•Distance limitation to reach EDAs.• Capacity of pathways converging to HDA.• Capacity to install patchpanels close to switches.• Level of security required in HDA.• Frequency ofmoves, adds, and changes.

HDACross-connect Installation Tips:

• AngleFlex™ patch panels allow intuitivepatch cordmanagement and help keep cleanHDA connection fields.

• Locating the Equipment Field in the centerof the rack alleviates congestion onvertical channels.

• Configure AngleFlex patch panels withleft/right cablemanagement per installationguidelines supplied with product.

• Avoid toomuch patch cord slack for optimumoperation. Refer to the table for patch cordlength recommendations.

HDA Alternatives:

• Can be assembled in a high-density cabinet(XHD84-Series). See Product Offering.

•When using the high-density (XHD84 Series)cabinet, use the center and side extensionkits (XHD8443CXF and XHG8443SXF) toincrease the capacity of the verticalchannels and properlymanage patch cords.See Product Offering.

This example demonstrates how a 672-portHDA is cabled using a partially centralizedtopology with inter-connect. Within thisHDA, two 336-port switches each connect tofourteen 24-port patch panels via permanentcabling. From each patch panel, cablingterminates to patch panels or equipmentin the EDA (not shown).

HDACabling Considerations:

• Number of ports in each EDA.

• Distance limitation to reach EDAs.

• Capacity of pathways converging to HDA.

• Capacity to install patch panelsclose to switches.

• Level of security required in HDA.

• Frequency ofmoves, adds, and changes.

HDA Inter-connect Installation Tips:

• AngleFlex patch panels allow intuitive patchcordmanagement and help keep clean HDAconnection fields.

• Horizontal managers below and above theswitch increase flexibility for switch access.

• Configure AngleFlex patch panels withleft/right cablemanagement per installationguidelines supplied with product.

• Avoid toomuch patch cord slack foroptimumoperation. Refer to the table forpatch cord length recommendations.

• Cisco Catalyst switches (shown) should becabled from the right to avoid blocking thecooling fan.

• Manage patch cord slack at the patchpanel level to avoid congesting theentry of the switch.

HDA Installation Alternatives:

This example demonstrates how to cable anEDA containing 96 copper ports from the HDAand 48 fiber optic ports from the SAN. Fromthe HDA, 96 copper cables terminate to two48-port high-density patch panels, which inturn connect to UTP ports on the servers. Fromthe SAN, fiber optic cabling terminates to fourLC adapter modules each equipped with 12 LCduplex connectors for a total of 48 LC duplexfiber ports. The adapter modules are housed ina high-density 1U fiber patch panel.

EDACabling Considerations:

• Maximumnumber of servers allowedin enclosure based on power/coolinglimitations.

• Number of copper ports requiredby each server.

• Number of fiber ports requiredby each server.

• Space for cable and patch cordmanagement, including slack.

• Space required for additionalequipment, such as power andenvironmental monitoring.

EDA Installation Tips:

• Using 30-inchwide enclosures provides betterpatch cordmanagement to the servers.

• Using 1U 48-port patch panels saves 2 RU forserver installation.

• Assembling 30-inchwide enclosures providesa 7-inchwide vertical management channelbetween enclosures.

• Install theKeyConnect™patchpanels per theinstallationguidelines suppliedwithproduct.

• Install the FiberExpress™Ultra 1U shelf per theinstallationguidelines suppliedwithproduct.

• Use a 1U horizontal cablemanager to routepatch cords to the left after exiting from theright of the panel.

• Route copper and fiber patch cords in twoseparate vertical channels. Route fiber patchcords on the same side asCabinetDistributionUnits (CDUs). If two CDUs are used in theenclosure, follow power separation guidelinesper the TIA-942 standard (Table 2 in section7.3.1) to avoid electro-magnetic interferenceon copper cords.

• Avoid toomuchpatch cord slack for optimumoperation. Refer to table for patch cordlength recommendations.

• Use blanking panels to block unusedspaces on the front side of the serversfor optimum cooling.

EDA Alternatives:

• UseMPO-LC 24-fiberModules (AX103729)andMulti-MPO 24-fiber assemblies (NXC-UPFX-PHXFEN-PHPFEN-O-0000) for quickdeployment between EDA and HDA or SAN.

• If cabling is distributed under raised floor,installing the patch panels at the bottom ofthe cabinet will simplify cablemanagementwithin the cabinet.

This example shows how to cable a 720-portSAN using a centralized topology with a cross-connect. A SAN switch containing 384 LCduplex fiber ports connects to 384 LC duplexfiber ports housed in three, 4U fiber patchpanels via permanent cabling. The 4U fiberpatch panels cross-connect to another 720ports housed in five, 4U patch panels in thebottom half of the cabinet. From there, fiberoptic cabling terminates to fiber patch panelsin the EDA. Setting up the SAN as a cross-connect increases security with all switch portsmirrored on fiber patch panels. This set-upoffers the possibility to expand the SAN to720 ports in the future.
