Detector Data Link (DDL)

The DDL will be installed between the detectors and the front-end computers.

The DDL is an integral part of the ALICE data acquisition system.

The DDL provides up to 200 MB/s bandwidth. The DDL consists of three parts:

Destination Interface Unit (DIU): on the front-end computers connected via the RORC (pRORC or HLT-RORC)

Multi-mode optical fiber cable: to bridge up to 200 meters, full duplex LC connector

Source Interface Unit (SIU): on the detector electronics connected to the RCU (prototype 1, 2, 3)

Towards the final DAQ

More realistic setup with respect to installations at Test Beams or at Point 2: Data stream over a long distance Electronics can be controlled remotely PC with LabView is not necessary High bandwidth upstream and downstream Scalable to more RCUs and FECs

Early integration of front-end electronics with theALICE data acquisition system All components are ready DAQ milestone #388 of ALICE

FeC2

The DDL is capable to Control and Configure the Front-end electronics integration with the ECS

Protocols are defined for 4 basic transactions: Sending commands (19 bits information) Reading status (19 bits address, 19 bits reply) Sending data blocks (19 bits address, file to send) Reading data blocks (19 bits address, file to read)

Interpreter is implemented for executing scripts Example of a FeC2 script:

define THRESHOLDS /local/thresholds.data

write_block 0x600 THRESHOLDS

read_and_check_block 0x600 THRESHOLDS

stop_if_failed -1

write_command 0x1ff
