OverviewThe DT9841 is a USB/DSP Function Module withembedded processor for DSP and real-time controlcapability. The 6U module has standard connec-tions for analog input, analog output, trigger andclock.The DT9841 module runs completely separate fromthe PC to avoid Windows latencies. Once your pro-gram is loaded on the module, it does not need hostintervention and can run on its own. With 2 Mbytesflash memory the module can run automatically.The DT9841 can continue to run, monitor and con-trol data even if the host PC becomes disconnectedaccidentally, ensuring the security of mission-criticalapplications.

High-Performance Data Acquisition and DSPThe DT9841’s efficient hardware architecture lets youperform analog input, analog output and signal pro-cessing simultaneously. The memory is shared by theanalog I/O and onboard processor (and intermodulecommunications). Each subsystem on the board hasits own high-speed pathway in and out of memory, andeach pathway has its own independent DMA controller.This allows A/D and D/A subsystems to operate with-out processor intervention.

Sigma-Delta A/D and D/A Data ConvertersAnalog input and output circuits feature advancedsigma-delta converters for improved ac performance.Sigma-delta A/D converters offer the following advan-tages:• Simultaneous sampling by independent A/D con-

• Reduced noise and improved accuracy result from64x oversampling on each input

• Elimination of errors due to aliasing and high fre-quency noise using the built-in "brick wall" digital fil-tering system (external anti-aliasing filters are notneeded)

• Excellent low-level signal-to-noise performanceimproves dynamic accuracy on low-level signals

• Excellent differential linearity assures consistentlyaccurate data conversion across the full input range.

Sigma-delta D/A converters provide automaticinterpolation between data points for smoother out-put. Signal reconstruction is performed by an 8xdigital interpolation filter followed by 64x oversam-pling.

A Complete DSP Programming EnvironmentThe DT9841 can be used by developers, programmersand high-level applications software package users. Adeveloper is able to use the DT9841 with TI CodeComposer under Windows 2000 or XP.

DT9841 Software OverviewThe host software for the DT9841 provides a means ofinstalling and configuring the DT9841 from the host,tools for downloading and executing DSP programs, anAPI (Application Programming Interface) for writinghost programs to communicate with running DSP pro-grams, an API for building utilities, diagnostics, etc,and sample programs that use the two APIs.

Host Communications LibraryThe library provides the API for the DT9841 so thatyou can write host-based programs for communicatingwith the DT9841. It allows other software components

to easily be layered on top of it later.When you are writing your own DSP code for theDT9841 with TI Code Composer, you may need towrite a corresponding PC-based program that com-municates with the DT9841. To do this, you need ahost communication library that you can call fromyour host-based program. This library hides thedetails of the communication channel between theprogram and the DSP chip. In the case of the DT9841, the library hides thedetails of the USB interface and provides a stream-based model of communication in its place. ThisAPI meshes with the DSP BIOS model, which youmay be using to write your DSP programs on theother side of the USB link.

Application Programming Interface An API for Windows is provided with the DT9841and supports stream, message, and low level I/Oto/from the DT9841 board. The API is broken into four categories of functions -Board, Channel, Messaging and Hardware func-tions. The typical user program will rely on only theBoard and Channel functions. The last two cate-gories are typically very specialized user programs.

• Board Function - Provides facilities for opening, clos-ing, resetting boards and downloading programs.These functions operate on an entire DT9841 boardrather than a subsystem within the board.

• Channel Functions - The channel functions are oper-ations on a single communication channel between aprogram running on the host and a program runningon the DT9841. At any given time, multiple channelscan be opened between the host and a DT9841.Each of these channels is a unidirectional-bufferedbyte stream.

• Messaging Functions - The messaging functions giveaccess to the lower level host-to-DT9841 messagingsystem.

• Hardware Functions - These functions provide thelowest level access to the DT9841 hardware.

Utility ProgramsThe DT9841 ships with two utility programs:

Download ProgramA command line program that downloads a namedCOFF file to the DT9841. These binary image filesare the compiled output files from Code Composer.

Diagnostic ProgramA command line program that will run a series ofdiagnostic tests on the DT9841 board and verify itsbasic functionality.

DSP Example ProgramsProvided with the DT9841 are several simple exam-ple programs that illustrate how to program theboard via the Code Composer cross developmentenvironment. These programs illustrate how toaccess a single major subsystem or feature of theboard.

Analog Inputs — Built-In Channel Expansion CapabilitiesThe DT9841 has eight 24-bit differential inputswith an input signal range of +/- 10 volts. The reso-lution of 24 bits allows LSB recognition down to sig-nal levels of +/- 5nV. All eight A/Ds are clocked atthe same time for simultaneous sampling. Externalclock and triggers on the module allow you to addadditional modules, in a master/slave configuration.Program the first module to provide the master clockand synch up additional modules to expand up to64 simultaneously sampled channels.

Analog OutputsThe DT9841 features two 24-bit delta sigma analogoutputs, clocked with the A/D conversion clock.The module also features software selectable 20kHzfilters on the D/A outputs.

Digital I/OThe DT9841 features 24 digital I/O lines: 8 inputs,8 outputs and 8 programmable as digital I/O orup to three counter timer functions.

User ConnectionsThe DT9841 has two 68-pin standard connectorsfor the Analog I/O, DIO and C/T. A single USBcable ships with each DT9841 module. An AC to DCpower supply is available separately.

USB 2.0 CompatibilityThe DT9841 module is both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1compatible. USB 2.0 extends the speed of the con-nection from 12 Mbps on USB 1.1 up to 480 Mbpson USB 2.0, providing an attachment point for next-generation peripherals which complement higherperformance PCs and user applications. USB 2.0 isboth forward and backward compatible with USB1.1, resulting in a seamless transition process forthe end user. In fact, USB 2.0 uses the same cablesand connectors as USB 1.1.

500 V Isolation Protects Your DataBecause USB modules reside outside the comput-er, they are susceptible to groundspikes. Thesespikes can cause system crashes and may evencause permanent damage to your computer. TheDT9841 features 500 volts of galvanic isolation thatprotects your computer from groundspikes andensures a reliable stream of data.

IntroductionImagine adding data acquisition capabilities to yourPC as easily as plugging in a mouse or a keyboard.Just connect a compact data acquisition module toyour computer (you don't even have to powerdown), install the supplied software, and connectyour sensor directly to the module. In minutes, andwith state-of-the-art accuracy, you're capturingdata: temperature, pressure, sound level, whateveryou need. And you have done this without pro-gramming, without opening up your PC, withouteven thinking of IRQs, board configuration, powerrequirements, or connection schemes. This convenience and power are available today,thanks to the USB, a serial expansion bus, and toData Translation’s range of USB-compatible dataacquisition function modules. Together, the USBand these modules promise to greatly simplify theway people perform data acquisition on PCs.

Easy InstallationSince ease of use was primary in the creation of theUSB, many features have been designed in to makeUSB devices among the easiest to install. To begin,USB devices are true "plug-and-play." There is nosetting of address lines, interrupts, or configurationjumpers. The host PC automatically identifies aperipheral when it is plugged in, and searches forthe software necessary to operate it. The first time adevice is used, the user is prompted to install thedrivers and application, a process that takes just afew minutes. Ease of installation means USBperipherals can be shared between computers, evenbetween laptop and desktop models. USB devices are also external to the computer –there is no need to open up the computer to installthem. This external location also provides perform-ance benefits for noise-sensitive devices like data

acquisition peripherals. They are away from thecomputer's noisy motherboard and power supplies,and closer to the sensors they will be measuring.Hot-swappable USB devices are designed to beinstalled or removed while the computer is running.Peripherals no longer need to clutter the workspacewhen they aren’t needed. Just plug the device in,use it, then remove it when done.

USB Data Acquisition Modules Provide HighPerformance and Ease-of-UseData Translation’s USB modules for data acquisi-tion were designed according to the specifications ofthe USB standard, for power and performance notoffered anywhere else. The modules are all com-pletely powered from the USB, and serve as theirown screw terminal panels, with removable termi-nal blocks that accommodate all user connections. For greatest data integrity, all Data TranslationUSB modules use a data transfer technique thatassures no loss of data. When gathering data, everypoint is important. Circuit designs that deliver mostdata points, but occasionally drop values, are notacceptable for serious work. As recommended by the USB standard, the USBmodule's circuitry, including all user inputs andoutputs, have 500 V isolation to the USB and hostcomputer. Since the USB module is external to thehost computer, this protects both computer andinput device from damage. It also eliminates voltagespikes that can shut down the operating system orresult in inaccurate measurements. Why the PCI Bus for Data Acquisition?Data Translation manufactures a wide range ofdata acquisition hardware for use on the high-per-formance PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect)bus. This includes boards like the DT3010 Series,DT3001 Series, and DT301 Series. By takingadvantage of the PCI bus, these plug-in boardsoffer convenient and affordable high-performancesolutions for demanding data acquisition applica-tions.

What Is the PCI Bus?The PCI bus is an integral part of today’s high-per-formance personal computer systems. Conceivedand designed as a way to give peripheral compo-nents high-bandwidth access to the host processorin a PC, the PCI bus is a board-level expansionstandard with important benefits to anyone whosework involves PC-based data acquisition. In replac-ing the aging 3 to 5 MB/s ISA (Industry StandardArchitecture) expansion bus, the PCI bus breaksopen the bandwidth bottleneck by providing a 132MB/s (theoretical), 95 MB (typical) burst-rate high-way. In addition to its high bandwidth, the PCI busfeatures master/slave operation to reduce latencyand offload the host CPU. Other advantagesinclude plug-and-play autoconfiguration to simplifyinstallation; processor and platform independence,which lets designers easily develop PCI peripheralsto run on other platforms than the Pentium PC;and a specified migration path to 3.3 V, which sim-plifies the design of portable systems.

Benefits of PCI for Data Acquisition ApplicationsFor data acquisition, the high-bandwidth of the PCIbus allows simultaneous, realtime gathering ofgap-free analog and digital input data, along withoutputs for analog stimuli and digital control.Data acquisition boards built for the PCI bus canfeed acquired data directly to the PC’s memory,minimizing the need for onboard memory. UnlikeISA boards, which run the risk of overflowing databecause they need a large onboard memory buffer,

PCI data acquisition boards do not leave gaps inthe acquired data. In other words, PCI boards donot lose data like ISA boards can if the bus doesnot respond fast enough to the board’s request totransfer data.High bandwidth also ensures gap-free data transferby allowing several subsystems to be active simul-taneously rather than sequentially. For example,Data Translation’s DT3010 and DT3000 Series PCI-based boards feature continuous performance,which provides gap-free simultaneous A/D, D/A,and digital I/O operation at full-rated throughput.To do this, the boards have circular buffers thatstore multiple values that are transferred acrossthe PCI bus simultaneously to take advantage ofthe high bandwidth. The DT3010 board features anA/D throughput of 1.25 Msamples/s from onechannel, up to 32 analog inputs, two analog out-puts, up to 16 digital I/O lines, and four usercounter/timers. The DT3003 board features anA/D throughput of 330 kHz from one channel, upto 64 analog inputs, two analog outputs, and eightdigital I/O lines.Because boards on the PCI bus can transfer with-out intervention from the host CPU, data can besimultaneously acquired and processed in realtime. For example, as data is sampled, the hostCPU can perform a mathematical operation, plug-ging the results into a spreadsheet for analysis.Moreover, by adding digital I/O functions, you canset up real-time collection and control experimentsthat would be impossible to conduct across the ISAbus. For example, a data acquisition system run-ning on the ISA bus would run out of bandwidthcarrying just two analog outputs and one analoginput, each running at 200 kSamples/s. Plus, dueto the plug-and-play feature of the PCI bus, systemresources are all configured automatically. What is Machine Vision?IntroductionA machine vision system inspects and separatesthe good parts from the bad by automating repeti-tive tasks. Designed for a dedicated purpose, suchas LCD inspection, ball grid array and alignmenttasks, or multi-function tasks such as gauging, barcode reading, robot guidance or presence verifica-tion, a machine vision system is used in manufac-turing where accuracy and reliability are important.

Components of a Machine Vision SystemA machine vision system contains many compo-nents that directly impact its performance: cam-eras and optics, lighting, part sensor, frame grab-ber, PC platform, inspection software, digital I/Oand network connection. Creating a machine visionsystem requires planning and attention to detail.First off, be certain of the final goal. Is it to meas-ure or gauge, detect the presence of an object or amark, recognize and identify patterns, compareobjects, match them to a template or guide a robotor machine? Once the goal has been identified, thenext step is to design the tests needed to inspectthe part.

Hardware FactorsWith these tests in mind, you need to evaluate yourhardware requirements. Knowing how much timethe vision system will have to inspect each partdetermines the minimum clock speed of the PC.Another important consideration is camera selection,because it is directly tied to the application. A mono-chrome camera is used in the majority of inspectiontasks, because it can capture 90 percent of theavailable data and is less expensive than color. Colorcameras are used to acquire color-specific images. Ifa part is stationary, a standard interfaced camera isused while a progressive scan camera is used toobtain a sharp image that is in motion. Frame grab-bers connect the camera to the PC. The goal of ananalog frame grabber is to convert the image fromthe camera to digital with as little change as possi-ble. The goal of a digital frame grabber is to formatthe image from the camera properly before it istransferred to the PC for processing. Because of theiruse in manufacturing assembly lines, frame grab-bers should tolerate vibration, dust and heat. Data

A goodmachine vision system will not perform optimally ifthe optics or lighting is poor. Optics are lenses thatproduce the best image resolution while the light-ing illuminates the key feature being inspected. A machine vision system can only do what it hasbeen programmed to do. There are many variablesto consider that can occur during inspection suchas changes in colors, finishes or backgrounds, sur-rounding lighting, and changes in position or orien-tation. Each of these can trigger false failures.Proper camera mounting, secure lighting positions,constant and repeatable part/component position-ing and blocking of ambient lighting can help elimi-nate many common set-up and false-failure prob-lems.

Software ConsiderationsSoftware is the cornerstone of any machine visionsystem. The software determines the length of timeneeded to generate and debug inspection tasks,what inspection operations can be performed andhow well these operations can be performed.Machine vision software packages generally take oneof two types of development approaches: graphical orcode-based. A graphical development environmentlets developers with little or no code experience use amouse to quickly create applications. The disadvan-tage, however, is that flexibility is limited if a greatdeal of customization is required or if an application-specific vision tool must be developed.The code-based approach uses a common languagethat allows for complete customization and for usein compatible programs. The disadvantage is thatthis approach requires code knowledge and takeslonger to develop.Data Translation’s machine vision software package,DT Vision Foundry, is a single package that providesboth development environments. Therefore, a devel-oper can choose how he wants to create applicationsbased on the application requirements, the time con-straints, and his own expertise.

In this example, the Contour Classifier Tool, which provides OCR capabil-ity, was used to read letters on a curve while the object being inspectedwas in motion.

The company in this example needed to read 2D Data Matrix bar codes,possibly damaged, at any angle. The 2D Data Matrix Tool auto-detectedthe size of the matrix and read it in the rotation of 360 degrees. The Toolreported the angle, the x-centroid and the y-centroid, and easily read dam-aged codes.

Using a combination of DT Vision Foundry tools, a complex application involving the location of coordinates on a cylindrical objectwas solved. The manufacturer needed to know at which point on theobject to make a cut. The DT Vision Foundry program found the presenceof the point and provided the coordinates.

In this example, a medical company needed to insure that the stopper ineach vial was secure. The problem was solved by measuring the distancefrom the top of the stopper on both left and right sides to a point on the vial.The Search Tool with sub-pixel analysis capability was used to determinethe exact location of the stopper. Frame Grabbers for Imaging and Machine VisionNo matter what the application, images are more thanpictures – they’re data. Our frame grabbers provideaccuracy and reliability, test after test.

Introduction Frame grabbers are PC plug-in cards that captureand convert an image(s), supplied by a video source,into digital data. Video sources can include: videocameras, camcorders, VCRs, television broadcasts, X-ray equipment, CT scanners and many others. Theframe grabber also stores, processes and enhancesimages to be analyzed or displayed on a video monitor. Frame grabbers are used in machine vision, thermalimaging, high-resolution medical imaging/diagnostics,surveillance/security, digital microscopy, high-accura-cy gauging, astronomy, etc. Data Translation suppliesa range of frame grabbers for these types of applica-tions. Because they are designed for high-speed, accu-racy and real-time acquisition and work with a rangeof video sources, they are the ideal solution for a cus-tomer’s image acquisition needs.There are two types of frame grabbers: those designedfor industrial and scientific applications and thosedesigned for multimedia applications. The former isused in applications requiring high speed, accuracyand the ability to use a range of video sources forimage acquisition. To do this, a frame grabber mustbe designed to maximize every stage in the imageacquisition process.

Typical Stages in Image Acquisition Connecting video sources to the frame grabber isknown as the video input stage. The next stage,known as analog-to-digital conversion, translates theincoming video, which is in analog form, to digitaldata that a computer can use. The interface and con-trol stage handles real-time data delivery to a hostcomputer’s memory, where the image is manipulated,formatted or analyzed in some fashion. Once theimage is processed, the next step is to communicatewith an outside event, depending on the results gath-ered from the processed image. For example, if a pro-gram has been set-up to inspect the print quality of alabel on a bottle and the image captured from thelabel doesn’t meet certain criteria, there must be away to perform some action on the bottle, such asrejecting it from the assembly line. This is known as acontrol or outside event. A frame grabber must com-municate with an external device, such as a roboticarm, to perform this action. This is known as the digi-tal input/output stage. Frame grabbers that provide

this function save the cost of purchasing, installing,programming and connecting a separate digital I/Ocard.

New Era in Image ProcessingRecently, a coalition of manufacturers along with theAutomated Imaging Association Camera Committeejoined forces to design a newer, faster, general-pur-pose communications interface. Camera Link becameknown as the interface standard to simply and inex-pensively connect frame grabbers with digital cam-eras. Instead of a spaghetti cluster of wires and termi-nators, camera and frame grabber manufacturershave built-in two industry-standard 26-pin connectorsinto their products. Cable manufacturers have alsodesigned Camera Link cables to complete the picture.

Ready-to-Run Imaging ApplicationDT-Acquire is a menu-driven, ready-to-run softwareapplication that allows you to acquire, load and saveimages using your Data Translation PCI frame grab-ber. Using DT-Acquire, you can verify the properoperation of your board by acquiring a single frame orperforming a passthru operation.

Choose Your Image Acquire OptionsDT-Acquire offers you full control of parameters,including:
