Ambiente 2009
TOP FAIR
sprach mit Nicolette Naumann, Bereichsleiterin der
Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH.
What are the key trends for 2009, the most exciting new
products and the best designs? International retailers will
find the answers to all these questions at Ambiente where
some 4,600 exhibitors from 100 countries are presenting
their latest product worlds for the tabletop, kitchen,
housewares, giving and living segments. TOP FAIR spoke
to Nicolette Naumann, Event Manager for Messe Frankfurt
Exhibition GmbH.
Ms Naumann, Ambiente has made some impressive additions to its design range by extending Loft to include two more hall floors. What can visitors expect to find in this transformed area? Loft is Ambiente‘s design rendezvous and covers everything from the young avant-garde to established global brands. In ➜ Hall 6.1, styles are influenced by exhibitors such as Anthologie Quartett, Artificial, Authentics, Chilewich, Henry Dean, Design House Stockhom, Fatboy, Hey Sign, Klein & More, Konstantin Slawinski, Norman Copenhagen, Reichenbach, Paula Navone and Stefanie Heringe. In ➜ Hall 6.0 this year‘s new exhibitors include Helit Innovative Büroprodukte, Time & Style Prestige Japan, Yonobi, Memento Italy und Umbra U+. Rounding off this portfolio of high quality, unconven tional design are visitor attractions such as Talents, our sponsor-ship programme for young designers, the new Next area with its young niche suppliers, Japan Style (a shared stand) and the On Design lecture area.

What was decisive in your decision to take a more designoriented approach? Design is becoming an increasingly important element in the buying decision. People have had enough of fast consumption. They are looking for authentic products which suit them and underline their personal-ity. There is noticeably more demand for values like quality and sustainabil-ity. What used to be an enjoy-it and throw-it-away society is now looking for potential heirlooms, classics and soul soothers, a blend of heart and reason. This is also apparent in Trends 2009, which clearly reflects a shift away from the fast pace of life in recent years.
Trends 2009 is an important orientation tool for retailers. What is the main focus of your 2009 presentation? The highly emotional character of the presentation will have a long-term impact and make the nature of the individual styles more comprehensible. Retailers will take away easy-to-remember images for the 2009 trend year. In this context, our aim is to offer our visitors clearly structured, easy-to-apply information. The numbers one to four are more than just design and contextual elements, they also denote the four themes running through the presentation and are repeated in both the Trendbook and the various lectures.
What other special features does Ambiente 2009 have to offer? The key feature of Ambiente 2009 is its familiar layout which makes it easy for fair visitors to find their way around. This year, an interesting feature of Dining, in itself a leading international trade fair, is the number of companies celebrating anniversaries at the fair. These include Glaskoch, KitchenAid and Leifheit. I would also like to draw the attention of fair guests to the Design Plus Award and the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, which provide an excellent, industry-wide insight into the current product world.
Thank you very much for talking to us, Ms Naumann.

Serving up great ideas
In the Talents special exhibition area in ➜ hall 6.0, at 29 dif-
ferent stands young creative designers from 14 countries are
presenting exciting ideas for table settings and a modern,
urban lifestyle.
Tomás Alonso is showcasing a plate and cutlery combination with a cloth napkin as a permanent style element. With her “Spoon for the First Bite“ Katja Bremkamp has applied herself to the gourmet trend towards exclusive mini morsels. These young avant-garde designers are happy to let emotions and decorations flow, displaying them with functional surprise effects like Aryun Park from Korea: only when you look more carefully will you notice that her porcelain dog is a quality tea set for one!. Concrete, once considered crude, has been given the rare honour of joining ceramic and porcelain. German designer Alexandra Gauß has given her beautifully structured concrete bowls a graceful appearance with translucent coloured silicon. The wide spectrum of opportunities opened up by structure and light inspire young designers like J. Luis Navarro to produce explosive creations.
Ecology and sustainability are set to become mega trends. Adam Jozef Groch, winner of the Polish Pro Deko Award 2008, has designed a bag for carrying flowers called “eco-bag“ which can be manufactured from recycled paper or natural fibres. Berlin designers Nina Farsen and Isabell Schöllhammer make more out of less. They offer intelligent concepts for interior design in limited spaces. For instance, their “repaper“ wallpaper doesn‘t just serve as a wall decoration, it can also be a shelving system or a cloakroom.

Sustainable innovation
Design can do more than just look good. Design Plus pro
vides proof of this. At Ambiente 2009 a total of 24 exhibitors
from 15 countries won awards in this year‘s international
competition.
29 products which offer more in terms of their concept, quality, sustainability and usability have been honoured with awards. Established brands such as Alessi, Arzberg, Guzzini, Iittala, Menu, Royal VKB and WMF have demon-strated that sustainable corporate success is the result of innovative spirit. Young companies such as Nordprodukt and designers such as Alexa Lixfeld were also able to assert themselves with unusual ideas and convincing con-cepts. Alexa Lixfeld first attended Ambiente in 2007 as part of the Talents initiative in support of young designers. The products selected for the 2009 awards come primarily from the table, kitchen and housewares sectors. These include the attractively shaped “Form Gourmet“ dishes, “Nest 8“, which is a stackable kitchen set, and the practical lemon grater “Palm Zester“. The jury was also impressed by a number of home accessories such as “August“, a rechargeable LED lamp, and personal accessories such as a pair of gloves for parents called “MamaMia“. The Design Plus Award has been handed out by the “Initiative Form und Leben“ (Design and Life Initiative) since 1985. It is sponsored by Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH, the Rat für Formgebung (German Design Council) in Frankfurt, and the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, DIHK, in Berlin.
graceful - couture-like - feminineThe new classic is exquisite, luxurious and yet still casual. This modern interpretation favours pale colours, gracious decorations, delicate details and surprising mixes of materials. The ornamentation is more refined than ever, while the surfaces are decorated with art deco, art nouveau and Asian motifs. These are joined by subtle graph-ic elements and remarkable portrayals of animals.

nO Design!
Matteo Thun is associated with a wide variety of
disciplines. These include architecture, design, art,
communication and university teaching. Yet he cannot be
confined to any one of them. He has never allowed his take
on current developments to be restricted by the
boundaries of any one subject. Below, he advocates
design that goes beyond stylised self-presentation to
rediscover the fundamentals.
Zwilling „T WIN 1731” ➜ 9.1 • E03
Was setzen Sie dagegen? NO Design!
Mr Thun, which products have made the strongest impression on you recently? I’m interested in authenticity – Zwilling‘s first knife designs, for example. These knife designs served as the basis for our knife series “Twin 1731”. The series is named after the year in which the Zwilling brand was established. We combined the richness of experience and the tradition of the brand and reinterpreted them. The combination of light, balanced lines, manufacturing expertise and valuable raw materials makes these new Zwilling knifes very special objects – the user and the onlooker can feel this with their hands and with their eyes.
Memphis was once your way of rebelling against uninspired and purely functional design. Today you also speak out against over-design. What‘s behind this position of yours? NO Design! For me, NO Design represents an iconic form that has been stripped of all superfluous elements to make the shape and function as pure as possible. This means that the true essence of a “thing” is what‘s really important – NO Design is what I have named this simplicity, this purity.
You have a Ph.D. in architecture. What role does architecture play in your product design? On a large or small scale, in architecture and in design, I work according to the motto that true luxury means the simplicity and directness of things. Only true, reliable, pure and unmistakeable prod-ucts have a positive influence on our lives. They give us the gift of trust and are all the more convincing because they are self-explanatory.
What is it about a project that makes you accept it, be it a design or archi-tecture project? It has to challenge me to find new solutions and to improve things for the user. For example, Messe Frankfurt’s Press Centre is a major platform for the work of many journalists. This presented me with the challenge of creating a “soft”, flex-ible ambiance in which the individual areas are marked by varying intensities of light. The warmth of the natural materials and the “vertical garden” serve as a counterpoint to
the technology, which disappears from view

Gesichtsfeld verschwindet.
as far as possible. Another point which I find very important is the brand identity and the location. In October, we completed the new HUGO BOSS store in the Meatpacking District of New York. The diagonal wooden structure, which, as a superstructure, already covers the façade of the Hugo Boss Unit in Switzerland, serves here as an interior design. It symbolises the interaction of the brand’s various lines – a completely new merchan-dising concept for the brand. The interior is an attempt to embody the “anima” of the Meatpacking District and represents a naked aesthetic that harmonises with the “Genius Loci”.
You say: “My style is no style.“ Why do you reject easy recogni-tion? I leave that to the star architects. Each of our architectural designs is built to harmonise with the “Genius Loci” and to allow for the project’s requirements and the needs of the client. This is very similar to product design – we integrate into our design the brand’s philosophy and its immediate requirements, and we always search for the true essence of a “thing”.
Mr Thun, thank you very much for talking to us.

Successful with originals
Reisenthel attaches great importance to its brand and its
own original designs. Two brand new products embody the
company’s strategy particularly well. It also has a number
of other interesting new products. We interviewed Peter
Leinberger, national sales manager at Reisenthel.
“airbeltbag” has original airplane safety belt buckles and “streetshopper” is made of a material normally used for boat sails – what led you to select these original mater ials? Why should we be satisfied with anything less than the original? Why should our customers? Reisenthel takes the problem of imitations very seriously and we use all the means at our disposal to fight it. This is part of our strategy of always emphasising originals in our own product development. Besides this, the recognition effect that a customer experiences with the “airbeltbag” is very important: “I know that, I’ve used that!” And if you take a look at “streetshopper” you‘ll see that sail cloth has an attractive appearance and is
extremely tough and 100% reliable as well! By the way, this cloth has been available
for years. The safety belt buckle has as well. But in our field and for our purposes, both of them are new. “airbeltbag” and “streetshopper” are a combination of original design and original materials.

Der „airbeltbag“ verweist aufs Fliegen, der neue „street-shopper“ aufs Segeln. Welche Anmutung wollen Sie ver-mitteln?
The “airbeltbag” points to the experience of flying, while the new “streetshopper” invokes sailing. What impres-sion are you trying to make? In both cases, the impression is dynamic and functional, aesthetic and practical, all at the same time. Of course, there is a sporty element in there as well. “airbeltbag” and “streetshopper” are more than a simple means of carrying or storing things – they are the expression of an innovative lifestyle that does not hesitate to display itself to the outside world. The metal buckle makes “airbeltbag” suitable for dynamic young men as well.
How do you manage to conquer people’s hearts over and over again? We show them the beauty of everyday life. Our products satisfy the desire for aesthetics and quality. They embody
utility, and yet they are lively and colourful. People who wear, carry, or use them have more fun. They are pro-
ducts that solve problems and don’t cause any.

How do you protect your originals from imitations? When large chains launch cheap imitations into the market, that‘s the end of our business with that particular product. That‘s why we don‘t only want to protect ourselves; we want to protect our retail partners as well. We try to include special details in our product designs that make it possible to protect them by filing utility model applications and registering our designs in the Design Register. We exhaust all legal means in our efforts to fight imitations. We have been very successful, even when our opponents have been large companies.
How do you help retailers increase their sales? We have quite a bit to offer when it comes to marketing concepts, displays and shop systems. These make it possible for a retailer that has just begun offering our products to display up to six collections of small pieces – e.g. “mini maxi” collections – in a very small space.
Reisenthel is a traditional trading company with an unusual strategy: instead of looking for pioneering styles on the international markets, you develop them yourselves. What are the advantages of this approach for your customers? Many trading companies search the international markets for products, and many find them. The only problem is that they all find the same thing, which means that the products are interchangeable. We don’t want to take that path; that’s why we generally design our own products. This means that our products can’t be so easily compared with or replaced with others. The most important thing is to offer products that guarantee ourselves and our retail partners a unique place in the market.
Mr Leinberger, thank you for talking to us.

A contrast to extravagance and the new traditionalism Recently trends have been very much determined by an array of
white tableware in extravagant shapes. Villeroy & Boch now provides a contrast to this with its “New Cottage“ series, redefining white tableware in the modern country segment: subtle, restrained and comprehensible. This tableware series integrates nature while exploring key lifestyle themes such as “healthy eating“. The design is strikingly delicate, light and modern, com-municating country style in soft, slightly organic shapes with leaf motifs in discreet variations. “New Cottage Basic“ is the undecorated version, “Green Garland“ is the decorated version.
Villeroy & Boch‘s classic collection “Arden Lane“ reinterprets the traditionalism of “Re-Think und Re-Mix“. The series has been produced using the original “Anmut“ design, which roughly translates as ‘grace‘ and was developed by Karl Leutner for Villeroy & Boch in the 1950s. The design has now been given an innovative decor which creates an entirely new balance between masculine and feminine elements. Points that look like studs stand for masculinity and technology while other elements are more reminiscent of chains of pearls and add the feminine touch.

A linear design, completely transparent crystal and a subtle interplay of thicknesses are the distinguishing features of the new “Sasso” collection designed by Biagio Cisotti and Sandra Laube. The curved lines of the glasses call to mind stones polished by the sea. You have to touch and hold “Sasso” to fully comprehend the interplay of shapes.

Cooking and dining
The diversity of indulgence
Modern lifestyles influence people‘s eating habits in all
kinds of ways. This shapes their expectations of kitchen-
ware and tableware. Above all, they want more flexibility.
B. Gesundheit, New Work, Umwelt, Globalisierung oder Individualisierung, in Essstilen niederschlagen, die zugleich Lebensstile reflektieren.
In a survey of “Food Styles“ conducted by the Institute of the Future, Hanni Rützler and Anja Kirig reveal how mega trends such as health, “new work“, the environment, globalisation and individualisation are reflected in eating styles, which, in turn, reflect lifestyles. One of the most important results was that over and above the basic function of eating, people are becoming more interested in the pleasures and ceremonies of eating. It‘s all about a new “aesthetics of eating“ which appeals to all our senses. In recent years a lot of attention has been given to sight and smell. Now the focus is on entertaining our taste buds, with different con sistencies, for instance. The ingredients are easily recognisab-le,“ explains Hanni Rützler. “Communal cooking and eating events focusing on sensory experiences“ are organised in an attempt to provide a coun-terbalance to the excessive individualisation which has gained the upper hand in most other areas of people‘s lives. These are seen as a conscious demonstration of lifestyle. The effects of globalisation are no less multi-facetted. The new “fusion food“ approach to cooking has seen an upsurge of worldwide interest in Asian cuisine and has inspired new fast food and convenience solutions. Interacting with this interest in Asian cuisine is a return to local cuisine, to local produce which people trust, to “terroir“. This is also one of the main themes of “Green Style“ in which “wellness, business, regional products and healthy recipes“ combine to deliver new sensory experiences. (www.zukunftsinstitut.de, www.futurefoodstudio.at)
Manufacturers of cookware and tableware have reacted to these various trends and created some interesting products.
“Form 2006“ / Arzberg
Everything for the gourmet‘s table - ArzbergWhether it‘s your coffee break at the office, your midday snack or a relaxing
evening with friends: modern collections should be just as good for healthy recipes as for international cuisine. Created by designer Peter Schmidt, “Form 2006“ seems predestined for this role. Picking up the “oven to table“ trend, “Form 2006“ has now been extended to include pieces developed in collabor ation with Kolja Kleeberg, head cook and owner of the prestigious Berlin restaurant “Vau“. They add a touch of professionalism and quality to any kitchen. The multi-talent among them is a new, small bowl. Delicacies can be taken straight out of the oven and served in the bowl on the matching saucer. Used as a lid for soup bowls, it can also keep croutons crispy and soup warm. The new plate is equally multi-purpose. It‘s just the right thing for bread, salad, or even the salad dressing jug. It can also be used as a lid for the bowl.

The new direction of design
Italesse entrusts its art direction to a young international
star designer and draws attention to itself with a com-
pletely new image.
Founded in 1979 in Trieste, Italesse has become a landmark pro-ducer in the industrial and Ho.Re.Ca sectors. The company has now decided to enter the retail sector enabling consumers to have fun at home offering aperitifs and holding dinners and parties using unusual pieces.
For this reason Italesse began 2009 by entrusting the company’s art direction to Luca Nichetto, a young international star design-er. Luca Nichetto first worked with Italesse in 2007 – when creations such as “Titan” and “Stripe” were developed. This is now a real partner-ship which has lead to a total restyling of the company’s image without altering Italesse’s philosophy. A new product homogeneity which guarantees functionality and beauty is achieved by means
of communication techniques such as colour scheming, packaging, and advertising. A single colour, violet, binds together the entire
Italesse production. Subtle colours like ruby red and warm grey reinterpret existing creations. The result is both astonishing
and innovative. Among the new products are stylish utility objects such as the anti-slip, water-proof “Big Barmat” and
“Suitskin”, the new apron designed by Luca Nichetto which adds a touch of professionalism to the private bar. Italesse’s glasses give real style to any party. For instance, there‘s the beautiful “Martini Beach” glass series from the new “Beach” product line which also features “Brew Beach”, a new unbreakable, multi-functional stemmed glass.

This is the true story of Ballarini Paolo e Figli S.p.A, an Italian company based in Rivarolo Mantovano, Italy. Going back five generations, it has had the ability to anticipate market developments and to succeed in its mission to create new quality concepts for the kitchen.

In the 1960s the company took the strategic decision to concentrate its efforts on non-stick cookware and in 1967 the first pan coated with “Teflon®” made its appearance.
Major investments were made by the fourth generation of the family, Giuseppe, Angelo, Guido and Roberto. They are now running the business with the fifth generation, Alessandro and Luca Ballarini.
In 1996, a new modern plant for the production of porcelain enamel and high-end forged aluminium quality cookware enabled Ballarini to increase its strong presence in the European markets. It has been par-ticularly successful in Germany, which is considered one of the most challenging markets in terms of new quality standards and technologies. Almost 30% of Ballarini‘s total turnover comes from the German market. Three years ago Ballarini opened a branch in Montabaur, Germany.
A new German headquarters, also in Montabaur, was recently set up to emphasise the increasingly important role that the German branch, direct-ed by Klaus Schmelzeisen, plays in Ballarini’s development strategies.
Ballarini is proud to have obtained UNI EN ISO 14001 certifica-tion for its commitment to minimising environmental impact. Brand new technologies for an eco-sustainable production and a dry painting system (which uses no solvents or volatile substances) are major features of this commitment. Another important milestone in the history of Ballarini is “Thermopoint“, a technology which saves energy and maximises the durability of the non-stick coating.

Unusual design is also the hallmark of Bayreuth-based porcelain manufacturer Walküre. “Commonplace prod ucts are not what we‘re about.“ This sums up the company philosophy rather well. Walküre prefers to go for clear-cut, timeless and yet striking designs. An example of this is its buffet platters whose edges have been softened with smooth curving contours. They are in line with standard catering sizes, opening up all kinds of opportunities for creative buffet presentation.

Philippi – angels from abroadSometimes, even angels are in a hurry – particularly if they are give-aways and have to fly in from China in time for a company event. In June 2008, when the German subsidiary of Japanese cosmetics manufacturer Shiseido approached German designer Philippi to order advertising materials, it soon became clear in the sub-sequent meeting that this was going to be another rush order. Shiseido wanted to give away 2,000 “Angelo” key rings – 500 of which were needed in September. So it was off to the drawing board without delay as various samples had to be produced for approval. As Christian Schlomka, production manager at Philippi explains, “Customers have no idea how many steps are involved in a project like this. That’s why we always have to work so quickly.” The decision was made at the beginning of September. The unbranded “Angelo” was to be presented in an elegant black fabric bag bearing the Shiseido logo. At last, the go-ahead for the production in China could be given and by the end of September the first 500 pieces were ready for the company event. As Schlomka recalls, “The other 1,500 pieces were sent by ship to Germany at the end of October.” Angels are always punctual – even when they have to fly in from China.

Blomus – the measure of successHigh quality is the key motto of Blomus, an advertising media specialist. A manufacturer of bathroom equipment and sanitaryware had approached the firm through an advertising agency looking for a suitable free gift to mark the launch of a new collection of bathroom cabinets. As Bernd Schüpphaus, head of sales at Blomus explains, “The target group for this campaign was architects and commercial furnishing companies. For this reason, the product had to be of a high-quality – and had to match the slogan ‘the measure of success”. The bathroom specialist selected a stainless steel measuring tape from Blomus‘ product range. Blomus was to manufacture 1,500 pieces, discreetly per-sonalised.“ It is quite natural that companies who place orders with us are keen to have their logo discreetly placed, but still easily recognisable so that it will be a constant reminder of their firm. This is why we always focus on high quality and durability. In this particular case, we engraved the logo, using a laser technique, in anthracite grey on the matte stainless steel surface.“

ausgezeichnet.
In 2004 the Elvis tape dispenser received the Promotion Gift Award for the most innovative
advertising article.
Koziol – a real life rock starThe requirements of the new pharmaceutical customer from South Germany were quite clear. They were looking for a promotional article which would appeal to the emotions and could be personalised, an item – discreet but noticeable – which could become part of the daily routine of doctors‘ practices and advertise a new medicine for controlling high blood pressure. The people at Koziol, a company specialising in design located in the Odenwald area of Germany, didn’t take long to come up with something. As Uwe Thielsch, head of Koziol’s Incentives & Promotion Department, remembers, “The only possible article was ‘Elvis’, our adhesive tape dispenser.” Little Elvis really had to prove his flexibility to fulfil the order from the pharmaceutical company. The first step was to spray the dispenser in a special colour and print a four-colour logo on the leg. The logo was also printed on the adhesive tape. Finally, an agency designed a leaflet and special packaging to go with the desk-top rock star. The customer ended up with a high-quality give-away - the Elvis tape dispenser costs EUR 15 in the shops and is even a collectable. As Thielsch says, “There’s no need for Elvis to remain alone. Our keyboard cleaner “Winnitwo”, the notepad holder “Jimini” and text marker “Hugo” would also look great on doctors‘ desks.”

Nostalgic Art – creative works of artThe metal postcards manufactured by Nostalgic Art are also geared to people with a passion for collect ables. These small and nostalgic metallic works of art are very popular promotion items, nevertheless customers still need competent advice. “In preliminary discussions with our customers, we must first establish whether our medium suits the brand,” explains Carsten Rathnow, key account manager at Nostalgic Art. “A nostalgic product like a metal postcard is very suitable for traditional brand names or company anniversaries.” The big advantage of metal postcards is that you can design them any way you like – almost any motif is possible. ABUS, a manufacturer of security locks, appreciates this freedom and has been ordering metal Christmas cards manufactured by Nostalgic Art for years. The manufacturer is happy to offer advice and assistance to its customers in selecting a motif. “One year, ABUS wanted to promote the theme of “mobile security”. Our idea was a Santa Claus riding a bicycle and carrying a sack full of security locks.” After the initial meeting with a customer in which the creative design is discussed, it takes about eight to ten weeks before the product is finished. The manufacturing process alone takes four weeks.

Spice it upTroika can certainly not be accused of a lack of inspiration when it comes to gift design. This German designer label has launched a collection that is full of new ideas and exciting interpretations of wellknown products. For example, the “SPICY TRAIN” comes from the land of exotic spices right to your dining table. And the salt comes along for the ride! The stainless steel used in this set is suitable for food contact applications and reminds you of a historic steam engine. It is connected to the car behind it by means of a magnet. The practical closure can be opened by simply turning it anticlockwise. The good old pepper and salt grinder set has thus been reinvented to grace your table in a modern and dynamic form. “BIRD HOUSE“ is aimed at a different target group: designoriented animal lovers. This bird feeder is made of gleaming stainless steel. At a height of 40.5 cm, it fits into any flower or plant pot.

Kitchen gamesWertheimbased company StiefelmayerContento has also taken on the familiar salt and pepper grinder set and created its own unique design. At first glance, it is obvious who the target group is for this interpretation: boardgame fans of all ages. These witty pieces contain highquality ceramic grinders for salt and pepper – for longlasting play! The pepper and salt grinder is 5.8 x 15 cm and is available in black, white, orange, red and green.
h concept / +d: a message of joy in each designIn 2002 h-concept (pronounced ‘ash’-concept) originated from the desire to convey Japanese design to the world. Under the umbrella of the +d brand, h-concept developed decorative interior products which told their own stories in collaboration with other designers. At Ambiente 2009 +d is showcasing an impressive range of novel design ideas. For instance “Cao maru”, the soft and expressive “furrowed“ faces from Makiko Yoshida which are just great for letting off steam. “A white bookmark“ from Yuko Tokuda and Yumiko Komiya tells its own story. Sandwiched between the pages of a book it is caught “between the real world and a fictional world.“ With his “Numbered Mugs“ Takuya Hoshiko adds a “third dimension“ to numbers which are otherwise seen as two-dimensional. He gives them “the ability to be picked up and held in your hand“. “Picnica“ conveys more of a cuddly toy feeling. Tomohiro Kato created this rabbit shaped bag in the hope that people would care for objects in much the same way as they care for living creatures.

LEBEN Ltd. has
specifically designed
its “nonoji“ spoon series for modern Japanese rice dishes
with foreign origins. Breaking away from conventional
forms, “nonoji“ spoons can be used effortlessly – also in
Western eating cultures.
Splendid ergonomics The beautiful, streamlined design flows from the use of special ergonomics omitting unnecessary elements: • The straight design makes it easier to cut food and apply finger pressure. • The edge of the spoon has been flattened and the thickness of the metal reduced to make it easier to scoop up food. • The shape of the spoon fits your lips and its depth is just right for bringing the contents to your mouth. • The handle provides an easy grip and good balance. The asymmetric shape of the spoon is due to the positional relationship of the hand to the mouth. ”nonoji” spoons are available as right-handed and left-handed spoons.
”nonoji” - straightforward manufacturingIn 2000 the president of LEBEN, Atsushi Takabu, began the development of the first products of the ”nonoji” brand. The goal of the brand is to use straightforward methods to create a regular production of items of lasting value. Beauty and functionality combined in perfect harmony. The basis for this is a deep understanding of a product‘s fundamental purpose.

Marko Karvo from the Lido de Paris guests at the Tiger Palace Variety Theatre
Come and experience an exceptional magician in the
anniversary revue at the Tiger Palace Variety Theatre,
Germany‘s leading variety venue.
Magic became Marko Karvo‘s lifelong passion at a very early age. When he was just 13, he was already amazing his friends and teachers with his magic.
When he was about 16 he saw “Night of the Magicians“ on television. That was when Marko first heard about the world-famous Lido in Paris. From that moment on, it was his great ambition to perform there one day. While he was at school he vigorously pursued his hobby and de veloped his now classic magic act with mysterious birds. In 1983, he won the “Junior Magic Championship Prize“ in Finland, his home country. This reinforced his passion for magic and was influential in his decision to turn his hobby into a career.
He began his professional career by taking part in all kinds of ‘magic competitions‘ and the entertainment world very soon became aware of this very exceptional talent. In 1996 he was invited to attend the Monte Carlo Magic Festival, where he was immediately awarded the ‘Silver Wand‘. This award smoothed the path to making his childhood dream come true. It was followed by an engagement at the Lido in Paris that was to last six years, one of the longest-running attractions in the history of the Lido. During this time over 2.5 million visitors came to see the much admired Finnish Master Magician.
Marko Karvo can be seen until 21 February 2009 in the Autumn / Winter Revue at the Tiger Palace Variety Theatre along with other exceptional international artists who perform impres sive acrobatic acts.
business-training
“Dialogue in the Dark“
“Speak, so that I might see you.“ These words were once
spoken in broad daylight by the Greek philosopher Plato.
Participants of “Dialogue in the Dark“ will immediately
understand what he meant. This is where business teams
and executives on all levels will begin to see things differ-
ently.
A blind escort leads the participants through a pitch-black world of darkness with 5 different rooms covering an area of 500 square metres. Your neglected senses will return to life. Information you might otherwise have ignored will fire your imagination. In complete darkness everyone has to rely on their blind escort and on each other. Only those who speak are visible. A dialogue might begin, an exchange of ideas. We now know that when perceptions change, the effect is lasting. This can be put to the test in a very enjoyable manner in the “Taste of Darkness“ restaurant where culinary delicacies are served in the dark – a unique voyage of discovery for your taste buds! The “Casino for Communication“ adds yet another dimension to the experience of dialogue. Different communication games are played at nine tables. They all have one thing in common: you only have a chance of winning if you join in. Event organiser DIALOGMUSEUM has developed informative evening programmes, business workshops, seminars and training courses such as “Pimp your Communication“ and “Blind Confidence“ which use a change of perception as a valuable impulse in team processes. “Casino“ and “Dialogue in the Dark“ events followed by finger food tasting sessions in the “Taste of Darkness“ restaurant have been particularly popular recently. These events are suitable for groups of 30 or more. The “Casino for Communication“ next door is also a popular location. Darkness is a wonderful medium for unusual presentations!
