D .. R~,wLnr-, FIRST Commencement Exercises were obsened in 1771, just one year after Eleazar Wheelock opened his little college m Hanover. They Y.ere reported m the Sew Hampshire Ga=eue of Portsmouth for September 23 in this y.ay: "On Wednesday the 28th of August was held the first Commencement at Dartmouth College in this Province Y.hich was atlended by His Excellency Governor Wentworth Y.ith man) members of His ~1ajesty's Council. a numerous and respectable Body of the Clergy and other Gentlemen and a Concourse of People beyond all expectation. The following Gentlemen, Messrs. John Wheelock and Samuel Gray, independent Students, and Messrs. Levi Frisbie and Sylvanus Ripley, educated for Missionaries among the remote Indians. Candidates for the first Degree, performed the appointed Exercises of the Da\ under the Conduct of the Reverend President Wheelock, to the entire approbatfon of the Honorable Trustees present and obtained the Admiration and Applause of a crov.ded Audience. The Exercises consisted of an elegant English Oration upon the Vartues, succeeded by an Anthem; a Philosophical Oration in Latin, a Syllogistic Disputation, and a Valedictory Oration in Latin, folloY.ed by an Anthem, composed and set to Music by the )Oung Gentlemen Candidates for a Degree."
We learn from other sources that the exercises Y.ere begun and ended with pra)er. "'ere held in the open air near where Reed Hall no"' stands. on a platform of rough hewn board~ Y.ith a single plank for an ascent, and Y.ere folloY.ed by refreshments for the whole aud1ence, consisting of an ox roasted "'hole on the campus and a barrel of rum, both pronded by the mumficence of the Gm·ernor. The four young men Y.ho received their degrees had all taken the first three years of their college course at Yale.
From this simple ceremony of near!} two centuries ago the elaborate exercises of today with all their pomp and circumstance have gradually de\·eloped. The external characteristics have varied greatly over the years, but the central core for which all the rest exists, the granting of degrees, remains essentially unchanged.
The earliest Commencements were held in vanous and generally inadequate quarters. until the erectton on the north side of the Green in 1795 of the College Church. All the Commencement exercises from 1795 to 1907 inclusi,·e were performed m this building. but were transferred in 1908 to the then new Webster Hall. With the great expansion of the College after World War I this too could no longer accommodate the croY.d. and in 1932 the exercises moved out of doors. to the beautiful tree-shaded lawn b) the Bema in the College Park. When Pres1dent Eisenho.,.,er accepted the College's invitation to be present at the Commencement of 1953. it was immediate!:. foreseen that a much greater space would be needed to prO\ ide for the e.\pected throng of '1sitors, and the Baker Librar} Ja.,.,n v.ith its eas) extension onto the Green was chosen. It proved so serviceable a meeting place that all Commencements )ince have been held here.
From 1771 to 1834 the exercises generall:. took place during the last \\eek in August, from 1835 to 1871 10 Jul). and smce 1872 in June, change~ caused b} modifications in the College calendar. Originall) Commencement occupied but a single day, but a~ the College gre\\o, related activities sprang up and \\ere ass1gned to the two preceding days. From 1792 the two undergraduate Literary Socteties, the Theological and the Musical Societ1es, and the Ph1 Beta Kappa Society scheduled orations, concerts, and dramatic exhibitions. All were open to the public and fre-
quently aroused greater interest than the exercises of Commencement itself. For many years members of the graduating class delivered the orations before their respective societies, but later they united in inviting a distinguished speaker from outside the College to address them. Perhaps the most celebrated of these orations was the address on ''Literary Ethics" given before the Literary Societies of the College on July 24, 1838, by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
On the Sunday before Commencement in the College Chapel the President preached the Baccalaureate Sermon to the graduating class. This practice continued until the exercises of Wednesday moved in 1939 to Sunday to conform to weekend customs of the outside world. The Baccalaureate Address on Commencement Day by a distinguished recipient of an honorary degree then superseded the sermon.
Class Day was instituted by the senior class in 1854. An account of it is preserved in the journal of an undergraduate, who tells us that the exercises were held on Monday afternoon in the chapel; that after an opening prayer and music by the Woodstock Brass Band, three seniors presented, in order, an oration, a poem, and "a very fair song called Happy have been these da}'S, boy.s." T hen the class formed a procession, crossed the Green and saluted the President, ''after which they took their march to the large Pine Tree on Observatory Hill. There they sang the hymn When shall we three meet again? While singing this, they had encircled the tree. When this was through with, each one in order took, from an evergreen wreath , a little sprig or a flower as a memento of their parting and of their four-year course in College. The procession then marched back and disbanded." This year's Class Day is a direct descendant of that first one.
The exercises of Commencement Day itself have undergone many changes. At first the Salutatory was the highest honor. but from 1816 on the Valedictory took that place. The Salutatory was always in latin, the Valedictory in English. The early programs included orations, disputations, and dialogues, the last often expanding to several speakers and taking on a dramatic form. In 1793 a dialogue on "The Trial of Louis XV r·· required the use of ten speakers. The orations for half a century gave opportunity for the seniors to display their accomplishments in the languages. In 1807 the program listed orations in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Chaldaic, and French, and six in English. The oration in French on "The Degeneracy of Modern Italy" was given by George Ticknor, later to win fame at Harvard as the first Professor of modern languages in America. The last Greek oration was delivered in 1849; the Salutatory continued to be spoken in Latin until 1897.
The number of speeches ranged from ten to twenty during the early part of the nineteenth century, but increased after 1825. In 1835 President Nathan Lord, imbued with the curious notion "that ambition and emulation are selfish principles, and therefore immoral," abolished all competitions, ranks, and honors for students, and decreed that since there was no longer any recognition of honors, every member of the class must take part in the Commencement exercises, debvering a ten-minute oration on an assigned subject. Forty-eight such speeches were given that year, the exercises lasting all day, with an hour's intermission at noon. The result was what might have been expected; the audience was exhausted and bored, and, as one reporter noted, the exercises "did no credit to either the class or the College." After four years of this, a measure of relief was found by assigning parts to only one half of the class, chosen by lot! This was still too long, wearisome, and fruitless, but it continued throughout Lord's administration. After his resignation in 1863, the assignment of honors and careful selection of speakers were promptly resumed. The number of speakers was gradually reduced to six in 1898. to four, then three in the 1920s. and one in 1939, chosen by the Commencement Committee. His speech is entitled "Valedictory to the College."
The official language of Commencement until 1827 was latin, and all announcements were made in that tongue. Even the English orations were introduced as in lingua vernacula. On one occasion President John Wheelock announced loudly "Musica ex:pectatur~" Nothing happened, and he repeated it twice with increasing emphasis, then staring at the unresponsive band shouted "Play up!" Until 1892 the President retained the custom of conferring all degrees in Latin; since then he has used a dignified English translation. The first Honorary Degrees were conferred in 1773, and with few exceptions have been bestowed in all succeeding years.
~1usic has always been a part of the exercises. Through the eighteenth century anthems and other pieces of sacred music were introduced into the program to break the monotony of speeches. After its organization, the Musical Society of tne College provided the vocal selections. Instrumental accompaniment soon followed, but not until 1805 was a band for marching employed. Later the band also furnished concerts during Commencement week and dance music for the ball on Commencement evening.
Milton's Paraphrase of Psalm cxxxv1, sung to the tune of Nuremberg, was first used at a Dartmouth Commencement in 1895, at the suggestion of President Tucker, "as a stately but choral piece of psalmody [that] seemed to lit the early history of the College." It has since been sung at every Commencement except two. The custom of singing a stanza of Richard Hovey's "Men of Dartmouth" near the close of the exercises dates from 1910.
The academic procession has always been one of the interesting and important features of Commencement. The order of march during the first half-centur) , with some variations, consisted of the undergraduates, the candidates for degrees, two and two, the beadle alone, bearing a white staff. the President alone in his official robes, the Trustees, the Faculty, the Reverend Clergy, Gentlemen of Liberal Education. and "other respectable characters." Forming at the President's house (later at the Chapel), the procession marched about the Green and entered the auditorium between the split ranks of the students. After the Civil War the undergraduates no longer attended the ceremonies, the seniors alone forming the split ranks, and the line of march was lengthened at its end by the numerous alumni present, headed by the fiftyyear class.
The President's official robes, worn at every Commencement. consisted of the traditional cap and gown, although President Lord substituted for the cap a tall, shin), black silk hat, which he kept on during the conferring of degrees. The President's special insignia at Commencement since 1785 has been a badge of office. originally called a "jewel," worn suspended by a silver chain around his neck. This medal is elliptical in shape, measuring 4¥. by 3 inches. Its face is a rounded surface of beaten gold, beautifully wrought, enclosed by a raised beaded border of silver. At the top is engraved the sun, and below, in high relief. four human figures representing the fable of the old man and his three sons with the bundle of sticks, and the aphorism, "Unanimity is the strength of society." The back of the badge is of plain silver, bearing a heraldic shield above this inscription: "The Gift of JOHN Fl.UDE. BROKER.
Gracechurch Street, London, 5th April, 1785, TO the PRESIDENT of OARTMOUTHCOLLEGE.
for the time being at Hanover in the STATE OF !\lEW HAMPSHIRE."
Another historic item is the Wentworth Bowl presented by the Governor of the Province of New Hampshire, his Excellency John Wentworth, at the first Dartmouth Commencement in 1771. The silver bowl was given to President Eleazar Wheelock on that occasion, to be handed down to "his Successors in that Office." The Wentworth Bowl is of the "monteith" type with a scalloped rim, made in Boston by Daniel Henchman and engraved by Nathaniel Hurd. These two Yankee craftsmen were friends of Paul Revere in silver work. The Dartmouth Bowl has often been used by the
lnscnption o f the Wemv.orth Bov.l (also known as the Wheelock !\1ontetth)
>resident of the College and his v.tfe for serving punch on ceremonial occasions of :::ommencement. Small replicas of the bov.l are no\\. presented each year by the Alum-11 Council of the College to outstandtng Dartmouth men v.ho receive the Dartmouth \lumni A\1-ard .
At the first three Commencements, v. hen Go,·ernor Wentworth was present, the :>eadle, later called the marshal. was the High Sheriff of the Province, from >ortsmouth. Subsequently his duty was performed by an upper-ranking officer of the \1iliua, and from 1820 to 1844 by the High Sheriff of Grafton County. a resplendent igure with cocked hat and sword, gold lace and sash. In recent years the Dean of the :::ollege has sened as head marshal, v.ith a retinue of assistants from the Faculty.
fhe original \\Caring of gov.ns by members of the Faculty at Commencement coninued until about 1820, and occasionallY for some time thereafter. The custom then 'ell into disuse, not to be revived until 1908. when the exercises moved into Webster 7fall. Then for the first time the Faculty blossomed out in full regalia, including the Jrilliant hoods that have smce made the procession a pageant of color.
All undergraduates wore short gowns in the earliest days, but soon discarded them. fhe candidates for degrees thereafter dressed simply, in v.hatever v.ere their best :lothes. often of homespun. Students in more comfortable circumstances strove to be ·ashionable. Judah Dana 1795 recorded that his Commencement dress consisted of a Jlack coat, \\aistcoat, and small clothes. large silver buckles, black silk gimes, and a Jlack cocked hat. "v. ith my hatr cued down with a black ribbon and head and hair Jov.dered v.hite as the dnven snow." In 1827 the speakers appeared in black stlk robes 1ired for the occasion: in the 1830s they are reported to have worn dress coats with ;wallow tails: in 1840 "a black surplice gave dignity to the appearance of the ;peakers." At the Commencement of 1865 the entire senior class was clothed in "long Jlack coats, light gray trousers, and tall silk hats." There was no permanent umfor-
mity of dress. however, unttl 1892. when the present plain bachelor's gov.n was adopted for all graduatmg classes. The red ribbons worn by some of the candidates are the insignta of membershtp m the honor societ) of Phi Beta Kappa.
From the very beginning Commenceme~t took on for the non-college residents of the tov. n and countryside the nature of a holiday. They enjoyed the barbecue furnished b\· the Governor in 1771. In 1794 a local diarist noted "On Thursda) August 28 the Commencement \\as supplemented with a horse race." And m the first two-thirds of the nineteenth century the inhabitants for twent) miles around celebrated Commencement in much the same manner as fall muster or the agncultural fair. On that dav a huge throng packed the village to overflowing, not to listen to the academic exerci~es but to revel in the sights, sounds, and tastes upon the campus. The entire south end of the Green and nearly half of the sides had every available spot occup1ed by booths and tents. from which ''ere dispensed all kinds of food and drink. patent medicines, knickknacks and gewgaws, soap a nd cologne, and an endless variety of miscellaneous articles. Jugglers. mountebanks. sideshows, and auctioneers v.ere numerous. At the 1833 Commencement 11 is said there were thirty gambling places open on the Green. and twelve auctioneers shouted so loudly that the) could be heard inside the meetmg house during the graduation exercises. With the moving of Commencement into July in 1835, a busier time for the country folk, and with strenuous efforts on the part of the authorities of both college and town, these unpleasant features were graduall) eliminated. In the present centur) most of the noise and revel£) has been of a more legitimate sort. the natural accompaniment of class reunions.
To ev·ery graduating class its ov.n Commencement IS a memorable one, but in the long history of the College five have been particularly notable. That of 1819 v. as marked by a dignified celebration of the happy conclusion of the Dartmouth College Case. Daniel Webster 1801 'ol-as its most distinguished guest. In 1853 an unprecedented throng gathered to hear Rufus Choate 1819 deliver his famous eulogy on Daniel Webster. The Centennial Anniversary in 1869 of the founding of the College brought to Hanover a greater number of visitors than ever before, including nearly one thousand graduates of the College from the classes of 1804 to 1868. The presiding officer was the Chief Justice of the Umted States, Salmon P. Chase 1826.
At the Commencement of 1953 ten thousand people were seated on the Baker Library lawn on a perfect June day to see Prestdent Dv.ight D. Eisenhower receive from President Dtckey Dartmouth's honorary degree of Doctor of Lav.s and to hear his epoch-making address. Brief, forceful. and complete!) extemporaneous, it de,·eloped into a blockbuster of national and international importance when he came to his solemn and earnest climax: "Don't join the book-burner:.! Have courage to look at the truth and fight evil with knowledge~" This little speech made banner headlines across the countrv. started discussion here and abroad. and elicited innumerable editorials from jo~rnahsts.
The Bicentennial Year of Dartmouth College was officiall) opened v.ith the Commencement celebration in June of 1969. This gained historic importance not only from the mere fact of marking the College's 200th year and the opening of its third centur) but also from the participation in the e~ercises of the ninth Earl of Dartmouth and his Countess, \\hO came from England to do honor to the college that bears their name. Their gracious speeches at the unveiling of the Bicentennial Plaque and their sincere pleasure at the bestov. a! b) the College upon each of them of the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws made evident once more the unbroken continuity of Dartmouth from its founding to the present day.
Academic Attire THE rRADJTro--: ... L P"GEA~TRY of an academic procession, such as the one which opens today's Commencement exercises, is one of the impressive spectacles of our time. Its significance is attested by the array of handsome gowns and vividly colored hoods "om by members of the Board of Trustees, the Faculty, and other officers of the College. These display the symbols of scholarly attainment.
The earliest illustrations of gowns worn at Oxford University somewhat resemble cassocks worn by English teachers who found good use for the hood. or cowl, as protection against weather. A uniform American system of academic heraldry indicates the level of a degree displayed by the costume; also the field of study in which it was earned, and the institution by which it was granted.
It is the hood which provides academic regalia its color and offers the most information about its wearer. The silk lining of the hood bears the color, or colors, of the degree-granting college or university; its velvet facing reveals the color assigned to each area of study. The Doctor's gown may bear velvet trimming on the front and sleeves - such as dark blue for Doctors of Philosophy (Ph.D). A few institutions, mostly overseas but some in this country, authorize the wearing of colored robes. departing from the traditional black, and brightly displaying the official colors of the university. The cap and gown signifying Dartmouth's doctoral degrees have been green since 1967.
The American mortarboard. derived from the soft Oxford cap, is black. Its tassel, for holders of the bachelor's and master's degrees, is usually black, although gold tassels rna) be worn by holders of doctoral degrees and heads of institutions. The tassel is worn on the right side of the cap by undergraduates, on the left by holders of bachelor's and higher degrees.
The edging, or facing, velvet of academic hoods indicates the area of study The principal scholarly fields seen in the Dartmouth procession today include:
Arts, Letters, Humanities White Business Administration Nugget Economics Copper Education Light Blue Engineering Orange Fine Arts Brown ancluding Ar..:hatccture La" Purple Library Science Lemon
Medicine Green Music Pink Philosophy Dark Blue Physical Education Sage Green Public Administration Peacock Blue including Foreign Service Public Health Salmon Pink Science Golden Yellow Theology Scarlet
The colorful ceremony of awarding honorary degrees is featured by placing a hood over the shoulders of recipients. The silk lining of the Dartmouth hoods is Dartmouth green, and the velvet edging corresponds to the honorary degree awarded, as listed above.
