The Big Green is one of five squads from the powerful Eastern As- sociation of Women’s Rowing Colleges (EAWRC) to appear at this year’s Championships. Yale, Brown, Princeton and Racliffe (Har- vard) will all join Dartmouth at the Championships. Last time it raced, Dartmouth’s Varsity Eight took fifth in a close Grand Final at the Eastern Sprints, behind the EAWRC’s other qualifiers. Both the Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four took fifth in their respective Grand Finals, pushing the team into the NCAA Championships. This marks the first time since 1998 (also qualifying in 1997) that Dartmouth has sent its entire team to the NCAA Champion- ship, finishing eighth in the prior showings. Under the old format that awarded at-large bids to Varsity Eight boats, the Big Green sent a boat in 1999 and broke a seven-year drought with a Varsity Eight bid in 2007. While the 1999 squad took 11th of 16, the 2007 Big Green crew was just .42 seconds away from winning the Petite Final, still finishing an impressive eighth overall of 16. Since 1997, eight of the NCAA Women’s Rowing Team Cham- pionships have been won by EAWRC crews, with Brown taking home seven, including 2008, 2007 and a share of the title in 2006. An EAWRC school has finished second in five of the contests as well, including two of the last four.
