Course fees

All full time courses are free to anyoneaged under 19 on 31st August of thecalendar year in which the coursebegins. If you are over 19, there maybe financial help available to you –contact our Customer Services Teamon (01325) 503030 for more details.

Education MaintenanceAllowance

This is a weekly payment worth between£10 and £30 that’s paid directly to you. It’savailable to anyone aged under 19,starting college in September 2009 on acourse of 12 hours or more per week.Throughout the year, there are bonusespaid out if you remain on your course andyour attendance is good. Learner Support Fund

Travel

Which level isright for you?Employers and educational institutions like universities, measure yourqualifications in terms of levels. This will compare the range of routesavailable to you and what level of qualification you will achieve.

Entry Level: Entry Level courses are for beginnersand are designed to assist you in gaining basicknowledge and skills.Level 1: Foundation level courses are designed toallow you to gain basic knowledge of jobs, businessand industry and are the first steps to gaining avocational qualification.Level 2: Intermediate level courses include a diverserange of work activities and allow you to take moreresponsibility for your own studies.

Level 3: Advanced level courses prepare you foremployment and higher education. The range ofactivities you complete will be more difficult, variedand demanding than lower levels.Level 4+: Higher education courses include avariety of complex, technical, specialised andprofessional activities.

What does a diplomacourse involve?

• Principal learning that is specific to theparticular diploma you choose to study.

• Generic learning including functionalskills in English, Maths and ICT as wellas personal learning and thinking skills.You will also complete a project and aminimum of 10 days work experience inan area related to your diploma course.

Apprenticeships offer an increasingly popular way for people to getinto the profession of their choice, with plenty of on-the-job training.

Darlington College has excellent links with major employers ina host of different sectors – all of whom want to help with yourtraining – and gives you the chance to work with our ownindustry-standard equipment.

And as if learning from the best, boosting your teamwork andcommunication skills, and gaining a nationally-recognised qualificationat the same time wasn’t enough, you’ll be paid for your work too.

Learner Voice GroupsThese are regular sessions where thecollege’s Principal and other seniormanagers get to hear your views oncollege life. Various issues are addressedat these meetings and all student feedbackis taken into account, as the college aimsto make your time here even moreenjoyable and rewarding.

Student representatives

Students elected to these positions havevital roles to play. Tasked with givingstudents’ views directly to staff, they areinvolved in making decisions designed tomaintain and improve the quality of ourcourses. Representatives are also part ofinfluential groups, such as the StudentCouncil (see below), and appear on behalfof the college at events such as exhibitionsand parents’ evenings.

Entry Level

Duration: 1-2 years

Entry requirements: No formal qualifications needed to get on tothis course.

About the course: This is a BTEC course. You will study for entrylevel qualifications whilst improving your literacy and numeracy skills.Subject to availability, you can choose from a range of vocationaloptions – hair and beauty, catering, health and social care, metal craftor horticulture for one or two sessions a week. The course can beadapted to meet the needs of individuals. You will be taughtin small groups with additional support. You may spend one year onthis course then transfer on to your chosen Level 1 vocational course,whilst some may benefit from staying on the course for two years.This will provide you with options to experience other vocationalareas and will increase independence. The college works closelywith a large number of outside agencies to ensure a smoothtransition from school to college life and from Pathways to chosencareers. You will also get a taste of what it’s really like in the worldof work by participating in work experience.

Further study: This course prepares you for a Level 1 course.

Career opportunitiesArchitect • Surveyor • Site Manager

There are a wide range of careers in this industry fromarchitecture or surveying to carpentry, joinery andplumbing. If you have an eye for detail and enjoy learningand developing a broad range of skills, then a career inthe construction industry may be right for you.

Why study Construction atDarlington College?• You will learn in one of the largest constructiondepartments in the region.

• Darlington College has strong links with theConstruction Industry Training Board and the CharteredInstitute of Building as well as excellent relationshipswith local and national building companies.

• Study in fully equipped carpentry workshops, brickworkareas and plumbing and plastering workshops.

Construction

Duration: 1 year

Entry requirements: No formal qualifications are required but aschool report and an interview at the college are required. You willneed to have a good standard of written English and you will berequired to pass a skills test.

About the course:

Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

You must be enthusiastic about carpentry and joinery and beadaptable to learn various skills. Topics include being able to holdand put resources away safely, putting up scaffolding, portable powertools, being able to repair hand tools, basic joinery, wood machines,technical drawing and health and safety. This interesting course is apractical experience which is led through tutor sessions, practicalworkshops, group work and tutorials.

Diploma in Plastering

You must be hard working and willing to learn about the skills requiredin this craft. You will learn through practical and workshop sessions.Topics include; safe working practices, building methods andconstruction technology, prepare background surfaces and plastermaterials, produce items from moulds and many more.

Diploma in Bricklaying

Topics you will learn to develop this practical craft include; being ableto hold and put resources away safely, contribute to work relationshipsand providing work platforms, prepare materials and items for use andhealth and safety. You will be taught through a range of tutor ledsessions, practical workshops and group work.

Further study: You will be able to progress on to a Level 2 in therelevant qualification.

Keen to earn while you learn, as an apprentice in construction you willspend most of your time in the workplace and one day a week incollege to gain your qualification. You can study an apprenticeship invarious construction areas at level 2 or level 3. For more details onapprenticeships see pages 16-17.

Apprenticeship

The college offers CIOB Certificate/Diploma in Site Management.

Level 4+ – Higher Education

Duration: 1 year

Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs at grade D or above includingmaths and English, a school report and an interview at the college.You will also be required to pass a skills test.

Alternatively a Level 1 in the relevant qualification and an interviewat the college.

About the course:

Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery

This course will give you practical knowledge and experience andis ideal if you are interested in working with wood. Topics include;manufacturing of basic joinery items, fixing locks, door hanging, fixingskirting and architrave, stud partitioning and linings, setting out jointsand trusses, tool skills and maintenance and health and safety.

Diploma in Plastering

Giving you practical knowledge of industry standard skills, this courseis ideal if you are enthusiastic about plastering. Topics include; safeworking practices, building methods, how to prepare and apply plastermaterials to surfaces, how to fix dry lining and plasterboard products tointeriors, how to form sand and cement screeds, how to apply plasterand much more.

Diploma in Bricklaying

This course is ideal if you enjoy working in a hands-on environmentand learning practical skills. You will learn how to calculate materials,loading and uploading materials, preparing materials for mixing,and health and safety.

Technical Certificate in Plumbing

This course is the first step on the ladder to becoming a plumber.Topics include; key principles (science of water), system knowledge(hot/cold water and drainage systems), working with plastic pipes andfitting, heating systems, building studies and practical training, healthand safety, soldering, jointing and hand bending copper tube. You willspend time in the plumbing workshop for practical sessions and therewill also be theory sessions throughout the course.

Further study: You can progress on to a Level 3 course or as anapprentice in the relevant area.

Level 2 – Intermediate Level

CITB/City and Guilds Diploma in Carpentry and JoineryCITB/City and Guilds Diploma in PlasteringCITB/City and Guilds Diploma in BricklayingCITB/City and Guilds Technical Certificate in Plumbing Duration: 2 years

Entry requirements: 4 GCSEs at grade C or above, a school reportand an interview at the college.

About the course:

National Diploma in Construction

If you want to pursue a career in the building industry then thispractical course will help you gain the skills and qualification needed.Topics include; health, safety and welfare, construction and theenvironment, graphical detailing, measuring, tendering and estimating,building surveying, building regulations, environmental science,construction technology, ICT, CAD and applied maths.

National Diploma in Civil Engineering

This course introduces you to the Civil Engineering area of theconstruction industry, offering an insight to the options that you couldconsider in the future. Topics include; health, safety and welfare inconstruction and the built environment, construction technologyand design in construction and civil engineering, built environment,planning, organisation and control of resources, surveying andmuch more.

Further study: You can progress to a range of courses such as CIOBCertificate/Diploma in Site Management or a NVQ Level 3 or 4 in SiteSupervision/Management.

Engineering needs creative people, organisers and thosewho are good working with others. With an engineeringqualification you could pursue a career in a wide rangeof industries. These include; local authorities, the armedforces, manufacturers in all industries, research anddevelopment companies, IT companies and public utilities.With relevant skills and experience, you could specialisein project management, research and development orconsultancy work.

What if I don’t get the GCSEsI need to do the course I want?

Don’t worry. Once you get your results,come along to our full time enrolment eventin August and we’ll try to work out the bestroute for you to take.There is a wide rangeof courses to choose from, so if you appliedfor a level three course and don’t get theGCSEs you need, you can simply study theLevel 2 course and apply for the next levelup in a year’s time.

Do I get paid for comingto college?

Depending on your personal circumstances,you could be eligible for an EducationMaintenance Allowance (EMA), giving youup to £30 a week, plus bonuses for goodattendance and progression throughout theyear. You must apply for an EMA before youstart college. For more information, or toapply, log onto www.direct.gov.uk/emaor call 0800 121 8989.

Do I have to be in collegeevery day?

That depends on your course timetable.Most full time courses are between 16 to 20hours a week, which could be spread overthree or four days.

Walk The College is a 20-minute walk from the centre of town and the railway station. Darlington Walking maps are available showing walking times for other landmarks in the town all within a 35 minute walk of the College.
