Questions
The Intersection ofPolicy and Practice
WHAT ARE GREEN JOBS?
Reduce the use of fossil fuels Decrease pollution and greenhouse gas
emissions Increase the efficiency of energy usage Recycle materials Develop and adopt renewable sources
of energy Protect wildlife and ecosystems
The Intersection ofPolicy and Practice
WHERE ARE GREEN JOBS?
Middle-skill jobs requiring more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelor’s degree
Majority will be transformed from existing jobs, requiring a redefinition of skill sets, methods and occupational profiles HVAC technicians learning geothermal
pump installation Carpenters focusing on energy
efficiency and weatherization Electricians learning solar panel
installation Maintenance technicians from coal-
fired plants learning to perform similar tasks on wind turbines
The Intersection ofPolicy and Practice
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Energy Efficiency – Building Construction38% of CO2 emission are from
residential, commercial, and public buildings Green building design and construction Renovation of existing buildings Energy Management Systems Manufacture of renewable materials
LEED Certification – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
BPI – Building Professionals Institute
The Intersection ofPolicy and Practice
RENEWABLE ENERGY: SOLAR ENERGY
Active Solar Technologies include photovoltaics (solar panels) and solar hot water
Passive solar includes orienting buildings to take advantage of sun for heating and cooling, interior lighting designs, and designing spaces to circulate air

STLCC PARTNERSHIP RESULT
HOME ENERGY AUDIT TRAINING (HEAT)STLCC now an affiliate of the Building
Performance Institute (BPI) 40-hr accelerated class to prepare
candidates for BPI certification as a Building Analyst
Instruction includes principles of building science and diagnostic tools
Certification is earned through a written test and performance of a field audit
Graduates find employment with the community action agencies involved in weatherization
