LU ST EN VY GL UT TO NY GR EE D PR ID E SL OT H WR AT H DANTEUM FOR DAME STREET - ABANDON HOPE ALL YE WHO ENTER HERE Danteum Dame Street sees Dublin’s tower of Babel adapted to shelter the seven deadly sins of Modern Ireland. The project seeks to install a varied programme on each of the banks seven floors which correlate with the seven deadly sins, as listed in Dante’s journey through Purgatory in his work “The Divine Comedy”. Danteum Dame Street will strip the bank to its two cores. The re-patronised floor areas are filled with an interior architecture and, through subtle manipulation of the envelope define seven modes of Irish sin. The construction methods and materials used are those of the Occupy Dame Street protests. The project is disciplined by the movement’s practical and utilitarian construction and assembly. The material palette is therefore limited to plywood sheets and lengths of 2x4. In addition to the seven re-designed floors a new stair and public outdoor room will be assembled at the entrance. This space finally gives a place for people to wait, watch and meet, while at the same time being sheltered from the Irish weather. The Outdoor room references Limbo, described as an anti-chamber before Hell. Limbo is a place where the non-believers are contained, it’s a place of loitering and discussion. Creating seven spaces for Irish sin at the epicentre of the city should manage to attract the same amount of negative association as it presently does as the headquarters of Bank regulators. In Dante’s Purgatory souls that were trapped on a level of sin could ascend and be forgiven if they could manage to conquer their sin. It is crucial that we as a society can acknowledge our demons and attempt to reform ourselves. For too long in our past have we ignored our baser instincts. Now it is time to atone, indulge and prevail. (x) outdoor room Lust is a strip club. The club is defined by a catwalk which bridges the East and West cores. It’s flanked by seating areas for groups which are bordered by a bar with individual stools to encourage single men to visit the club. It was important to accommodate for this demographic as it can be discouraging for individuals when forced to sit in group oriented seat- ing. A bar stool allows for individuality while feeling part of a larger collective. The East core houses the dancers, the South of this core provides a theatrical dressing room space that celebrates beauty and satisfies the vanity of the girls. The North of the core is a place for the individual dancer, perhaps after a hard shift, it’s somewhere to wash alone. Surround- ing the West core are private rooms for private dances, accommodating groups of up to eight. The glazing has been removed on the South-East of the plan to create a smoking terrace. (a) Catwalk for strippers. 1:catwalk 2:terrace 3:VIP area 4:dressing room 5:bar 6: meditation space Greed is a Bookmaker. Bookies are usually small places, with small footprints, however if you com- bine all of the footprints of bookies you would find on any main street in Ireland you’ll have a footprint equal to that of Central Banks Bookmakers. The East core contains staff facilities and a safe room to the North of the core. The West of the core is a large till space to place bets and occasionally reap rewards. Natural light needed to be totally eliminat- ed from the plan, this drove the design of shutters which disguise themselves as monitor mounts and bench facilities. Surrounding the Eastern core are smoking areas, these are places of escape and reflection after a bet has gone wrong. (c) Machine that eliminates light, supports televi- sions and seats betters. 1:till 2:safe room 3:kitchenette 4:terrace Sloth sees the establishment of a new intensive grind school for State Examinations. This new es- tablishment seeks to feed lecture notes to procras- tinating students. 600 points, six classrooms, eve- rything here is points driven. At the epicentre of the plan is an alter supporting four photocopiers. In the East core is the staff room, to the East of that core is the notes archive which has all relevant notes for Senior and Junior certificates and an unsurpassed subscription to all “Less stress more success” publications. In the Western core are toilets and to the West of that, relaxation space, somewhere to procrastinate once you’ve finished copying those notes. The six class rooms all offer very distracting views of Dublin, the serious work gets done on the copier alter. (d) Stools to swing on during class. 1:staff room 2:notes archive 3:alter 4:foyer Wrath sees the relocation of the Joe Duffy “Live- Line” studio. The floor is comprised of two main elements. Firstly there is the studio and background services. At the centre of the plan is Joe, who sits at the head of a circular table. The studio has an irregular glazing system for acoustic reasons. Op- posite Joe is the production room. The East core contains a private room for Joe which has its own access by elevator. Secondly, a new concept for Live-line, a live call in. The concept is that the public can ascend the West tower, tell their miscarriage of justice to researchers, then the researchers consider that individual for the live show, if accepted they can proceed from the waiting rooms in the West to phone booths orientated towards Joe. Here they have the unique opportunity to relay their anger to Joe live. (e) Phone Booths to talk to Joe. 1:studio 2: producers room 3:background facilities 4:waiting area 5:live call validation desk Envy creates public screens which project images of the fluctuating top eight wealthiest Irish. This floor acts as a permanent temple and record keeper to the top eight wealthiest people in Ireland. The glazing is pulled right back to the centre, only protecting the projections against the harsh climate. Once visitors exit the West tower they are ushered to the right and forced in a promenade around the eight faces. The East core houses the caretaker of the screens. Their job is to maintain the slide projectors, to catalogue and archive and to develop celluloid slides of new record breakers. This is done in the darkroom in the South of the core. The eight projectors are serviced by a central spine, each projector has its own screen. (f) Projector and screen as one. 1:terrace 2:darkroom 3:caretakers apartment 4:service corridor Pride is an exhibition of Loyalist and Republican murals. Murals seen on gable walls in Belfast will be recreated on screens in the top and deadliest floor, Pride. The screens oppose each other, stare at each other. Visitors are invited to ramble through and examine the works. Each core is empty apart from its shafts. (g) Screen featuring extremities of Irish Pride. 1:terrace 2:west exhibition space 3:east exhibition space Gluttony is an all you can eat Buffet. The Buffet needed to be maximum, high density. Its floor area is filled to capacity with tables and chairs. Once exiting the elevators from the West core, consumers are fed through aisles where they collect their cut- lery and trays. Once equipped with the necessary tools to aid consumption they’re propelled forward into the buffet. The buffet offers a variety of fast food. It’s an all you can eat system, this encourages consumers to eat more than they actually want due to two illusions; value for money and beating the system. The buffet has small plates which encour- ages the ritual of piling as much food as possible on your limited area. The buffet is replenished by the East core which contains a kitchen and cold room.
