Daniels given recognition service The members of Union Baptist Church honored their Pastor, Dr. Benjamin Daniels, with a recogni- the Holiday Inn . North. Guest speaker was Dr. W.B. Lewis, presi¬ dent of the General Baptist State Convention. Dr. Daniels received the Doctorate of Ministry degree from Trinity Theological Seminary in Newburgh, Indiana in November, 1991. The theme for the service was, "Rekindle the Mind for Higher Aspirations and Nobler Deeds." Annie Howard, president of the Genesis Committee of Special Events, presided for the evening. Thomie Douthit, chairman of the Senior Deacon Board and Claude Rucker, co-chairman of the Senior Deacon Board welcomed the guests which numbered approximately 300. The Rev. Archie Logan gave the invocation which was followed with the recognition of members of the Dias by Mrs. Ivye McDaniel and music by Sherwood T. Davis, minister of Music for Union Baptist Church. , After the dinner, tributes were made to Dr. Daniels by Mayor Martha Wood, Alderman Vivian Burke, Deacon Samuel Stimpson of Dr. W.B. Lewis, president of the General Baptist State Conven¬ tion. Michael Bradshaw - Missions-Min¬ istries Director of the Pilot Moun¬ tain Baptist Association, Owen Hairston Senior Deacon of First Sigmas sponsor 'Open Care Package' drive In celebration of Sigma Gamma Rho Week, the Rho Chap¬ ter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. announces plans to sponsor an "Operation Care Package" drive for the homeless. The drive will be held today through the 21, on the campus of Winston-Salem State University where the chapter is located. Sorors of Rho Chapter are ask¬ ing students and faculty members to donate sample size or small con¬ tainers of lotion, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, mouthwash, kleenex, toothbrushes, or other small items useful to anyone who has virtually no possessions. Donations of the above items are welcomed from anyone in the community who wishes to give. Items may be left in the care package box located in WSSU's dining hall. Rho Chapter will also celebrate Sigma Gamma Rho week by partic¬ ipating in WSSU's first annual Greek Week which is March 30 - April 2. Sigma Gamma Rho's pro¬ ject for Greek Week is "Greek Clean Up Day" and a sorority dis¬ play on the campus. Ray Butler Moderator of the Rowan Baptist Association, Dr. K.O.P. Goodwin, pastor emeritus of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and Dr. Ronald P. Davis, pastor of St. John C.M.E. Church. Dr. K.O.P. Goodwin, presided in the Hooding Ceremony for Dr. Daniels with the assistance of Dr. Ronald P. Davis. Dr. Goodwin read the charge to the pastor and the church afterwhich Dr. Davis gave the prayer. . Dr. Drayton introduced the guest speaker, Dr. W. B. Lewis who brought the message for the evening. Expressions from friends were read by Brenda Butler, who with the assistance of Deacon Thomas Howard, presented Dr. Daniels with a replica of his degree mounted with a clock from the Union Baptist congregation. Dr. Daniels expressed gratitude for the event and recounted the efforts to attain the Doctorate of Ministry degree. His mother and sister were in attendance for the event. He also thanked his wife, Mrs. Bonnie H. Daniels whom he gave the opportunity to thank all for the efforts in bringing about the occasion.
