inserted amid the deteriorating elements of the faded industrial zone of chouteau’s landing, the project seeks to call attention to this area’s adapting landscape while still pertaining to both the nature of the place, and that of the program. the building’s sloped access takes individuals up and onto the elevation of the flood wall in a desire to re-engage with the mississippi river, while providing a strong sense of a place that resonates with possibilities.

the program of the project is a membership based workshop that provides training, resources, tools, and equipment to create and make with your hands what your mind dreams up.

the project site saddles the flood wall built along the banks of the mississippi river. while serving its purpose of protecting businesses from seasonal flooding, the wall has also closed off access to the river, making it almost obsolete, forgetting its relevance to the city.

retractable shuttersthe exterior perimeter shutter system shades direct sunlight, reduces thermal transfer, and locks in the conditioned environment when fully closed. the shutters also help secure the buildings contents. the duality of the building’s appearance between glass and steel that the shutters provide represents the open, forward thinking vision of the new (glass), while aligning with industrial surroundings and infrastructure (steel).

Seoul, Korea I bukchonprofessor: Kim Jungsung I fall 11 02

the Bukchon neighborhood in Seoul, Korea is a popular destination for seoulites and tourist, providing a pocket of tranquility and cultural richness within a fast pace city. nestled at the base of a mountain, Bukchon has become a unique landscape of traditional forms coexisting with contemporary buildings. the design of the site, places pathways between the building’s massings, striving to perpetuate the relaxing, exploratory nature of the area’s alleyways onto the project site.

borrowed viewsthe building site situated on a three story shelf between the lower, main street and the upper residential area is orientated towards spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and cultural grounds. the hanji craft institute’s floor plans and elevation design accentuates the focus on adjacent landscape through framing views surrounding environment.

the building re-engages pedestrian discovery by providing continuous pathways throughout the site. even from the outside, there are ample opportunities to view Korean crafts being made, as well as providing amazing views of the surrounding landscape.

the post cancer center focuses on the connection to life, rather than the afflictions that cancer may have caused. this noninvasive phase of cancer recovery shall occur in a comfortable, relevant, meaningful place for visitors and caregivers alike. the project design was to create a welcoming embrace that intrigues the visitor into engaging with the internal and exterior conditions of the building, while also wrapping the large oak tree on the selected site. it was important to create the bond between the building and the existing tree to accentuate the healing power of nature.

each residence has a private loggia with a two layer screening system, one of the layers is semitransparent. The screens allow for either sun shading or complete encloser creating a sun room.

adaptive expansion

the multi-family housing project advocates a density of residence that contributes to the social life of the neighborhood. based on a study of climatic conditions and the sun’s yearly trajectory, the site was designed by terracing residences that range from studios to two bedrooms. each unit has its own loggia, creating a hybrid typology that combines the house and the apartment. this hybrid housing allows for communal living while still providing each housing unit a sense of privacy. the loggias additionally provide each housing unit passive environmental conditioning, and adaptive use of the space throughout the year.

ironically, surfing, a recreational activity that creates a harmonies relationship between man and nature is most often performed on a highly toxic material, polystyrene foam (EPS). polystyrene is a petroleum based polymer that off gases VOCs in its creation, and is non-biodegradable. though because of its strength to weight ratio, economic availability, and ease to shape, it is the most often used material in making surfboards. In this one month project, an alternative to EPS was researched that would provide all of the same desired performance attributes, but did not harm the environment.

urban theater

the urban theater design was an extension of the activities on the street, drawing in and absorbing the density of the street population. by having open, outdoor seating with views to the stage, the theater sought to bring people of various demographics together to enjoy the performing arts.

located in an arboretum on a swampy piece of land, the research center was raised for increase ventilation and wrapped in a performative skin that provides sun shading during day time, though does not impede air flow.
