The Salk Institute, one of Kahn’s most recognisable buildings also contains quite an iconic public space. The complex is divided into two buildings, with a central courtyard in between. While the courtyard may not be public in the strictest sense, it can be deemed public space to the inhabitants who occupy th ebuildings.

The courtyard looks out over the pacific ocean along the southern Californian coastline. The central dividing stream of water providing a dividing axis that continues into the ocean.

The courtyard is designed as a space for contemplation, reflec-tion, and spontaneous interaction with fellow inhabitants.

The austere geometric concrete pavement and lack of any soft landscape tell us that this is not intended as space for extended relaxation. hard stone seats are provided around the periphery of the courtyard, emphasising the distinct emptyness in the centre. The negative (empty) space is just as, if not more important as the positive space.

Los Clubes is a materplanned residential neighbourhood whic Barragan designed and was developer. Of intrest is a parkcontained within the neighnourhood.

The central symbol of the park is a fountain, the Fuente de los Amantes. Only horses could enter the mirror of water, the foun-tain thus becomes a fountain of life, comprising two elements: a level evoking the feminine component and a prismatic structure, a symbol of the mascule presence from which the water flows in a horizontal continuum.

In the shallow water at the other end, are two witnesses, two troughs corroded by time resting on the cobblestones of which the water flows.

GEISEL LIBRARY, SAN DIEGOWILLIAM PEREIRA, 1970

Im interested in this library, even though its an institutional library due to its integration with the landscape, or lack there of, it stands like a monolith on a hill overlooking the university grounds and San Diego, like a tomb to knowledge. It is from the architectural period of my PM, demonstrating a style of the time.

RINGWOOD LIBRARY, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIAEDUMND CORRIGAN

Previously the failings of this library have been discussed, yet the program for this library could be comparable to the proposed program, such as the initiatives to create a public piazza sur-rounded by retail / cafe tenacies; and the proposition of a civic identity.
