April, publisher’s note It’s

It’s April, Y’all!

Can you believe it? This year seems to be flying by! And, unlike this time last year, there is some glimmer of hope that things are getting better and better each day with the pandemic...and, for that, I am incredibly grateful! I’m also so humbled for all the businesses that continue to join us each month and help keep this magazine coming to your mailboxes. A big welcome to Lowcountry Contractors and The Kingstide Restaurant for join-ing our growing family of sponsors!

Speaking of the Kingstide, if you have not had the opportunity to check it out yet, it is a must-do! Amazing atmosphere, and even better food...we are lucky to have this gem on the island! We are also starting a monthly cocktail and wine workshop at the restaurant...read up on it in this month’s issue and look for an evite coming out in the next couple of weeks on our social media platforms...it’s got limited slots, but will be, oh, so fun!

Lots of wonderful, informative articles this month from many of our sponsors, and great stories from our “Meet your Neighbors” and Kids2Kids, as well! Our Community Champions this month are near and dear to many of our hearts, Marsha Patel is cam-paigning to be the Woman of the Year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, on behalf of our amazing 11-year-old neigh-bor, Rhys Shaw. Please read their article and consider giving to this very worthwhile cause...every dollar counts!

Finally, it is my distinct honor to welcome Alicia Ward to the Daniel Island Magazine family! Alicia is a long-time island resident, owns her own communication company, Ward Communications, and also is the co-owner of Trinity Model and Talent Management. She will be joining me as our Community Relations Manager, and I couldn’t be more excited to have her!

Remember that I am always here, ears wide open, for any story ideas, or nominations for families, kiddos, and community champions...so do not hesitate to reach out!    Until next month, Jenny

Sponsored by Home TelecomKnow someone we should spotlight in our community in an upcoming issue? Submit all ideas and content to [email protected].

Just imagine...

Your best friend calls and says her 10-year-old son has cancer...your heart sinks...the water coming from your eyes won’t stop and you want to throw up. You quickly put all of your feelings aside and move into what can we do? Can we take care of the girls? Bring dinner? Walk the dog? Call anyone? Tell me...what we can do? We are here for you.  Helpless is a feeling, but not an option in these situations, and the community jumps into action. Thanks to the Shaw’s amazing group of family and friends, all the “things” are always taken care of, and they are truly grateful.

And then there are those who go even a step further...

Meet Marsha Patel and Rhys Shaw, our March Community Champions. Marsha is currently running as a candidate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Man and Woman of the Year Campaign. The Man and Woman of The Year is a 10-week fundraising competition to raise money and awareness for LLS. Marsha and her team have a lofty goal...to raise $150k+ which would be the highest so far for a woman to raise in the Lowcountry. This goal might seem large, but if anyone is up for the task, it is Marsha...and the generous community of Daniel Island is helping to make up a huge part of that goal.

Nominated by her friend, Caroline Soper, Marsha committed to running because even with her own growing business and family responsibilities, she knew she had to say yes for sweet Rhys, Lisa, Hill, Cate, and Emme.

Meet Rhys...

Rhys is our 11-year-old neighbor, and a true champion at heart.  An amazing son to Hill and Lisa Shaw, and the big brother to his twin sisters, Cate and Emme. He spent most of March in the hospital, not because of the Lymphoma but because of the side effects of the chemotherapy. The best way we can help is by raising money to find better drugs, not only for Rhys but for everyone that gets diagnosed with Blood Cancer every three min-utes. Any amount given is very much appreciated, as every dollar counts and gets us closer to a cure. The campaign runs from February through May 1, 2021. You can use the provided QR code or her website link to take you directly to Marsha’s page where donations can be made. Large or small, your contribution to this worthy effort is greatly appreciated. Please contact Marsha below with any questions and join her and Team Rhys in this fight!

Thank you, Marsha! Our community is better because of amazing friends and neighbors like you!

Where/when did you get Hatcher?I got Hatcher in July of 2020 in Anchorage, Alaska, where I lived for the past three years. Since I was working from home due to COVID-19, it was the perfect opportunity for me to adopt him from a family who had to give him up.

How would you explain your bond/story?I was originally dog sit-ting Hatcher for a friend who could no longer keep him. After two weeks of dog sitting, he had stolen my heart and I knew I wanted to adopt him permanently. He is such a happy dog and loves to give kisses and cuddle. Shortly after I adopted him we ended up moving to Daniel Island, SC.

What was your favorite Hatcher moment? My favorite moment is anytime we take him to the dog park. He absolutely loves being outside and playing with other dogs. He wants to be friends with every dog he meets!

What is Hatcher’s favorite thing to do here on Daniel Island?Hatcher’s favorite thing is playing fetch at Governor’s Park. He loves running around outside. He can carry two tennis balls in his mouth at a time so we always need at least three on hand.

What is Hatcher’s best “trick?”Hatcher’s best trick is that he will let us stack any food on his nose. We once stacked a whole orange on his nose!

on all our social media platforms the first week of each month and grab your spot...space will be limited.

Our first class will be on May 19 and will be all about the Daiquiri, featuring the delicious rum, Diplomatico Planas. Diplomático’s distillery lies at the foot of the Andes Mountains in Venezuela, where the purest of waters run to make the very best of rums. Its location was also carefully selected for its close proximity to the main sugar process-ing plants in the area. They are an indepen-dent, family-owned brand that controls the whole production pro-cess from field to bottle to create superb quality rums. Family is part of Diplomático’s identity. They put people first in everything they do and strive to create a Diplomático community around the world that reflects their values and commitments. The Planas rum is vanilla rich, with hints of fresh coconut, lemon, and black tea...and perfect for the classic daiquiri.

Charleston’s love affair with this spirit goes back all the way to the island of Barbados, where many of South Carolina’s early settlers stopped before moving on to Charleston.  In fact, Charlestowne Landing is one of the original homes to a group of Barbados plant-ers, looking for a place to grow sugar cane, like they did back home. They settled on a piece of marshy land they

called Albemarle Point, and what we now call the Ashley River.

Our workshop members can take advantage of The Kingstide’s amazing view while learning the art of making the perfect dai-quiri. Stay afterward and check out the new menu, featuring the freshest of seafood in this one-of-a-kind atmosphere!    Be on the lookout for the evite! This is going to be FUN!

financial wellness

It’sBy Stephanie Mackara, owner of Charleston Investment Advisors, LLC

Economic and Financial Literacy is more important than ever. Economic and Personal Finance education creates knowledgeable citizens and future workforce members. It is only by acquiring economic and financial literacy that children can learn that there are better options for a life well-lived, will be able to see opportunity on their horizon line, and, ultimately, grow into successful and productive adults capable of making informed and responsible decisions. Yet, most of our children are financially illiterate when they graduate from high school and college.

Would you give your 16-year-old a car without having taught them how to drive?  Without personally seeing how they perform behind the wheel? Without making sure they were ready to pass and did, in fact, pass their driver’s test? Let me answer for you, of course, you would not! Most states require children to slowly enter into driving with a permit, a test, and then, ultimately, if they are capable enough, a license. Schools even offer a Driver’s Education course to help students prepare for the road. Yet, when it comes to investing and personal finance, we throw caution to the wind and let our kids enter the markets without a guide or even a map.  Even worse, when it comes to simply interacting in this world, we send our kids into it with very little financial knowledge, yet we expect them to sign off on student loans while understanding the consequences 10 years later. Go out and get health insurance, car insurance, buy a car, buy a house, open an investment account, the list goes on and on of the financial decisions our children and we are faced with on a regular basis, yet without a strong foundation of knowledge, they are left often making poor, ill-informed decisions that can set them back, finan-cially for years.

What can be done? Let’s start with education. Education is the strongest foundation for financial success. Many of the local high schools offer a personal finance class, make sure your kids take it. There is a bill that is now in the SC House that will require every student in SC to take a personal finance course for grad-uation; if you are interested in showing your support sign the petition at change.org/moneymindedfamilies.

Month Barbie Melvin started her makeup career at the young age of 18. She has freelanced

as a makeup artist for some of the most prominent beauty brands in the southeast. By

building up a diverse clientele, Barbie has become one of the most sought after make up artists in South Carolina. Her demand grew so much that she decided that it was time to take her career to another level, and continue her education. Barbie enrolled into cosmetology school and obtained her license as an esthetician. Investing into beauty school was one of the best decisions for her brand, Pink Mansion Beauty, because it allowed her to provide an array of services. Continuing to break barriers, Barbie decided that she was ready to venture into selling her own line of cosmetics. Aside from all of her success with Pink Mansion Beauty, Barbie's career continues to flourish. She has been able to use her platform to uplift girls and women and has molded her business into doing exactly what she loves...making people feel beautiful. Barbie is a firm believer in when you look good, you feel good. Teaching others this motto has changed her life tremendously.

food for thought

Heartland Foods!

We took a minute to learn more about this amazing couple and their business:

What is it like working so closely with your spouse? We love it! We would not have it any other way. We wonder how people don’t work with their spouses. We see our marriage, our work, and our household as one big partnership. The key to making it all work is open communication and adapting as life changes occur, such as right now as we expect our first child in June.

What is your favorite thing about providing the Heartland Foods service?Amanda: Helping moms. I see thriving moms as the foundation of society. I have two images in my mind that keep me inspired. First, a busy mom driving home from work, seeing the place she used to

pick up take-out from, and no longer being tempted by it because she knows how easy and quick it will be to cook dinner when she gets home. The second, a mom feeling overwhelmed by everything she is juggling walks out to her freezer full of food and immediately lets out a deep sigh of relief when she sees all the easy, healthy options to cook. Anthony: I love hearing people on our service talk about their astonishment at the lack of quality elsewhere. You know, with fam-ily or just out of town and they don’t have access to their Heartland supply. The “horror” stories of being disappointed when they can’t eat Heartland chicken isn’t just a joke. People really do have a hard time eating stuff from the store after using our service.

Where are your favorite spots on the island? We both love Blondies Bagels & Cafe and Ali Baba Catering.

What are your top personal rituals for staying healthy and well?Anthony: Rock climb-ing! I call it manly yoga because it’s basically a moving meditation that’s both dangerous and exhausting.Amanda: I am cur-rently doing a 100 days of gratitude challenge (check out Live Inspired Gratitude Journal by Farin Doran on Amazon – she is local) and I carry a camelback water reservoir every day to help me stay hydrated!Together: We have a goal to go to every state park in South Carolina. We both love hiking and trails.

Robin Russell with her husband and children. She was one of Heartland’s first families to join on Daniel Island.

What first attracted you to shopping with Heartland Foods? We were originally with a previous food distribution company which Heartland replaced. We enjoyed the convenience of having all our fruits, veggies, and proteins readily available in our deep freezer. However, there were a few things that we wished we could change with the other com-pany’s packing and products, so we stopped getting deliveries for a few years. When we heard Heartland offered new items, we jumped at an in-house presentation and loved the products offered.

What’s your favorite thing about shopping with Heartland Foods?

Get the DL from a DI mom

We are all about convenience. The way the food is flash-frozen makes it taste super fresh and the flash freezing takes only a few minutes to defrost any-thing. I can pull a chicken breast out of the freezer and defrost it while pulling out my other ingredients and have dinner done in 30 minutes.

What is your kids’ favorite product? My kids LOVE the mixed veggies. I make them with almost every meal. We love the chicken cutlets. I bread them in panko and make chicken parm usually once per week.

Anything else you want other families on the island to know? We all have busy lives; why make it any more difficult with having to run to the store every time you need to prepare dinner? I now go shopping only one time a week. It saves money from buying all the unnecessary things you grab when you and your kids go shopping hungry. It also gives me my time and sanity back.

Heartland Foods, originally from Baltimore, MD, opened in Charleston in October of 2018. Committed to providing families the best and highest quality grocery shopping experience, they have been serving the Lowcountry with great excitement and a wonderful reception.

Meet Amanda and Anthony:These two met in March of 2016 the way most modern couples meet, via their smartphones on a dating app. For them, it was OkCupid that paired them up for their future adventures.

After getting married at the end of 2017, Amanda and Anthony were approached by Amanda’s father with a business opportunity in South Carolina: a chance to expand Amanda’s family’s business. With a chance to run their own operation, the two jumped at the offer. Once they learned the ropes they made their way down to Charleston. After two and a half years in business, Amanda and Anthony are watching the family company flourish as they provide exceptional food and service to families in South Carolina.

Heartland Foods is a bulk grocery shopping alternative servicing Daniel Island and the state of South Carolina. Here are the things you need to know:• First, they provide unrivaled quality. This might

sound like boastful words since everyone usually says it about their products, but until you’ve had Heartland’s food, you have no idea.

• Their products are a part of the “Never Ever” program. They use that term to convey that their products are even better than organic because they never ever use antibiotics, steroids, chemi-cals, growth hormones, preservatives, additives, or any of those things that shouldn’t be in our food to begin with.

• Heartland specializes in building custom pack-ages that are tailored to the families’ budgets, family sizes, and even frequency of cooking. Then it’s all cut to order. So you know it’s coming straight from the farm to your freezer!

• And the best part is the FAST defrost. Almost all of their products defrost in about 10 minutes because of flash freezing. They even do a free tasting where you can see it for yourself!

“When we heard Heartland offered new items, we jumped

at an in-house presentation and loved the products offered.”

resident business bio

Meet

Owner of Delpino Custom Homes

Where are you originally from? I grew up in the Washington, D.C., metro area and as the son of a career Naval officer, my siblings and I were fortunate to spend the majority of our childhood watching the D.C. area grow in a fashion that’s very similar to what we’re seeing today in the Charleston area.   What brought you to DI? Shortly after graduating from the College of Charleston, my wife Kara and I found Daniel Island in the early 2000s and quickly knew that this was the place and community that we wanted to be a part of and start our family in. Even from very early on in the development, you could see that Daniel Island was going to be a special place, not only in Charleston but in the Southeast – where the small-town feel was still going to be preserved along with access to one of the best-kept secrets on the east coast – Charleston.   Tell us about your family: We have four amazing children: Ava (sixth), Chase (fourth), and Tessa (second), who attend DIS, and Knox (3-years-old), who attends Holy Cross Island School. All four of our children are very active and participate in DISA soccer, gymnastics, basketball, and many of the other Island sports and activities. And like so many other children on the island, they can also be spotted biking, playing in the green spaces, or fishing in the ponds on a daily basis.

Tell us about your background: I’ve been working in Charleston’s Construction industry since 2006 and all of my experience has come from building in the Lowcountry.  My company started as a renovation company during that time and as Charleston continued to grow our projects also continued to grow, enough for my company to be able to focus on Custom Home Building. In addition to my early renovation work in the Lowcountry, I was also fortunate enough to have a significant amount of hands-on experience with my father-in-law who was known as a true crafts-man builder in Cape May, NJ. This combination of renovation experience and quality custom home construction techniques proved to be the foundation for the homes that we began to build and the principles which I continue to apply to our Lowcountry projects.

Why did you want to start a custom home business?  Building custom homes is about people, being creative, and working together to create solutions – all of which I enjoy and that’s what keeps the process fun and very fluid. Two critical elements of building are the connection between the design and the livability of the home, and how you combine living spaces with the natural surroundings. While we all enjoy seeing the amazing final archi-tectural and design elements, at the end of the day we are still living in these spaces – and in-between work, school, and sporting events, that combination of function and aesthetic involves coming up with creative solutions more than most people expect.   What makes your business unique? One of the most unique features of Delpino Custom Homes is the fact that my experience in construction was started in the Lowcountry and has been entirely shaped by the changes that the Lowcountry has been experiencing. Many of our early projects were focused on more of the traditional design and finishes that had defined Charleston almost since the beginning, but as Daniel Island continued to develop, the Coastal influence that we gained from our natural surroundings is now being combined with a very modern look and feel. Living on Daniel Island and seeing all of these changes in homeowner expec-tations and in new architectural designs, we have been able to utilize these changes and design homes that have now come to define the style of building that you’re seeing on Daniel Island today.

Tell us about your staff:  Building a house is very much a team effort and begins and ends with consistency. Many of our team members have worked with Delpino Custom homes for over five years. Part of that consis-tency begins with our Design/Build program that focuses on the planning process and working directly with our customers to design a home that meets their vision and their timeline. From the architectural process to the move-in date, our team is heavily involved in each project. From design meetings with our design manager to job site walks with our site supervisor, each team member plays a part in planning and scheduling with each homeowner to ensure their project meets their expectations and timelines.

What is the most gratifying thing about what you do?  It always amazes me when we take an idea from a set of archi-tectural plans and turn it into a customers’ dream home or space. Having that opportunity to work with our customers and build their homes knowing that they’ll be enjoying everything that Daniel Island and the Lowcountry have to offer from those spaces is truly rewarding in itself.

What is the most challenging?  Every custom project always has its own set of challenges – that’s where the custom part comes into the picture. But right now, and primarily due to COVID and the building industry continu-ing to work during the shutdown, we’ve seen a major backlog in supplies that would ordinarily have been readily available in local warehouses.  Everything from lumber to kitchen appliances has all seen dramatic shifts in pricing and availability, and, as a result, we’ve had to make adjustments to account for this as part of our building environment.

Where are you located? We’ve been located in the Park Circle neighborhood for several years and we actually just had a grand opening at our new office located at 1023 East Montague Ave. on the main street of Park Circle. One of the best features of our new location is our ability to have our Design/Build meetings with our architects, design profes-sionals, and our in-house design manager at our design center.   What else should we know about you, your family, or your business? Being part of the Daniel Island community has given us the chance to not only build homes but to give back to and be involved in amazing non-profit organizations like the March of Dimes and the Boone Project. It has also given us the oppor-tunity to become active members of the community such as helping to coach my children’s sports teams – especially, Ava’s Trident league basketball team. Whether you’re supporting local businesses or just enjoying the outdoor areas on the Island, it’s always a great reminder of what it means to be a part of the Daniel Island community.

Michael’s Barkery is a fun and innovative Pet Spa and Boutique located at 864 Island Park Dr., Suite 103, in the Central Island Square retail complex.

Meet Michael Patrohay, the magic behind the store. He was known as “The Mayor” at his New Hope Pennsylvania High School because of his engaging personality.  Everyone he met knew he had a beloved dog-named Sunshine. When it came time to do a senior project, with the goal of exploring career aspirations, the answer for Michael was to bake and sell dog treats. They were an instant success and this small-inspired event led to the vision and creation of Michael’s Barkery where our mission is to provide employment opportuni-ties to make a difference in the lives of our teammates who are adults with cognitive disabilities while having fun supporting animal lovers.

At Michael’s Barkery, we make and sell our own dog treats that are made from human-grade, high-quality,

nutrient-rich ingredients in our very own state-of-the-art kitchen. Our teammates are involved in all aspects of our production including making the dough, cutting out the cookies, baking and packaging. We offer a wide range of bagged or individually decorated cookies displayed in our case as well as ready-made or custom “Bark-day cakes,” bone broth, and nutritional toppers that will entice the most finicky of eaters.

In our spa area, we are fortunate to have caring, knowledgeable groomers that have been recognized for their work. Our teammates are also involved in this area of our store where we provide a wide array of grooming services from nail trims, baths, to full or partial grooms as well as many a la carte services. We carry many grooming necessities such as sham-poos and brushes to keep everyone looking good and feeling their best in-between those spa days.

In our boutique, we try to carry something for every cat and dog lover. We carry cat and dog food and supplements. We also look for unique, hard-to-find items that you just can’t find everywhere.  We have cute clothing, sweaters, and coats. Toys galore from cuddly to tough and durable. For those that love to chew, we have a full bully bar, as well as

games and training treats that provide hours of entertainment. We also have a great selection of collars, harnesses and leashes, bow ties, and bandanas. If you are looking for pet supplies or that hard-to-find unique gift for your dog or that pet-themed gift for that dog lover, we are your place.

We strive to provide the best qual-ity products and services and work to ensure that every customer is satisfied. We love being your local, friendly, informative pet store. We love getting to know everyone and are always here to help in any way that we can or just to say hi and provide lots of rubs and hugs for our four-legged friends.

For the love of pets!

Where are you originally from?David grew up in Boston and Elizabeth was born outside of Philadelphia, PA, but moved to Lewes, DE, where she lived during her youth. They met in Washington, D.C., where they worked together at the Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC), the non-profit organ, eye, and tissue donation program in Washington, D.C.

Know a family that we should feature in an upcoming issue? Please email [email protected].

How long have you lived in this neighborhood? We have been on DI for three years now and love the people and the neighborhood.  We feel blessed to have found such a wonderful place to live.

What college / university did you attend?Dave did his undergraduate work (B.A., Economics) at St. Lawrence University in New York and his MBA at The College of William & Mary.Elizabeth did her undergraduate work at Washington & Lee University and her MPH at The George Washington University.

What are your professions?  Non-Profit HealthcareDave is the President/CEO of We Are Sharing Hope SC – the organ, tissue, and eye donation pro-gram in South Carolina. Elizabeth works as a consultant and profes-sional trainer for organ, tissue, and eye donation programs throughout the country and also serves in editorial and advocacy roles for organizations focused on migraine education and awareness.

Tell Us Your Family’s FavoritesBeing TogetherOur family really enjoys time together. We try to spend as much time together as we can – when we are not working, in school, or participating in outside activities.

Our SpotsOur family really enjoys the Charleston area. We enjoy the waterfront on Daniel Island where we can walk or bike along the paths. We like Spinny Park for the kiddos and often enjoy a walk in downtown Charleston to let the kids experience the rich cul-ture in our city. One of our favorite things to do is to

drive to Sullivan’s Island to enjoy an evening walk and playtime on the beach. We are so appreciative of all the wonderful things we can do as a family in our beautiful new city.

Do you have any favorite Restaurants? There are so many wonderful places to go and eat in our area. It’s almost impossible to name only a few – but here goes:As a family, we enjoy eating on the Island, whether it is outside at Dockery’s or Vespa or inside at Lidi’s. Elizabeth and I really enjoy our date nights on the Island where we might have a drink and appe-tizers at Sauer Grapes or dinner on the outside patio at Sermet’s.

We like to take the kiddos to Sullivan’s Island for a casual dinner at Poe’s and then ice cream before heading back.

Elizabeth and I also frequent Sullivan’s Island for some alone time. We will start with a walk on the beach and then dinner at High Thyme or The Obstinate Daughter.

It is also not uncommon for us to travel downtown to enjoy a walk around the Battery or down some of the historic streets to soak in the history and beauty that surrounds us. We couldn’t begin to name all of the restaurants there we like to pop into!

Where is your favorite vacation spot?We have only been in South Carolina since 2017, so we have tried to use our vacations to explore our area.  We have enjoyed time in Savannah and have had multiple vacations in Asheville and Black Mountain as well as a “hurrication” in Helen, GA, one memorable year.

Do you have any favorite sports teams?Growing up in Boston, Dave is a big fan of his Boston sports teams.  He’s a fan of the Boston Red Sox, the Bruins, and the Patriots and enjoys catching up with those teams. Kyle seems to enjoy tormenting his Dad by becom-ing a fan of the New York Yankees – which obviously has caused a good amount of consternation during base-ball season.

What do you like to do to relax? We enjoy our time together as a way to relax. Cameron likes to play video games and Kyle and Reagan like to run and play outside to “get their energy out.”

Dave enjoys running and bicycling as a way to relax and Elizabeth enjoys walks on the beach and has started playing some tennis with LTP at the DI Tennis Center.

How are you involved in the community?Dave’s work keeps us involved in the local community but also throughout the state.  He often travels across South Carolina, educating the community on the donation, the legacy it leaves, and the life that it can give.

What activities are the kids involved with? Our kids are very active in the neigh-borhood, riding bikes and playing with the neighborhood kids. Cameron enjoys swimming, video games and is active in tennis with LTP. Reagan takes classes at Peace Love Hip Hop, and she and Kyle both enjoy swim-ming and playing with friends.

What is your favorite part about living in your neighborhood? We enjoy everything about living here. We have amazing neighbors, and DI has a wonderful community of incredibly kind and thoughtful people. We feel fortunate to be able to raise our family here.

We enjoy the neighborhoods and the businesses on DI. We also appreciate our ability to walk and bike the many paths around the Island.

We feel fortunate to have such great restaurants so close to us and really feel that DI is a wonderful place to live and relax.

What would you like your neighbors to know about your work in the community?Elizabeth and I are deeply passionate about our work in organ, eye, and tissue donation. We each have been involved in this work for over 20 years.

We are continually inspired by the strength, courage, and compassion of all the donor heroes and their fami-lies, who out of their own tragedy and intense grief say yes to helping and healing others.

We have seen the healing power of donation firsthand in the legacy it can leave and the life it can give.

We feel privileged to work with such amazing people in this mission and to

see the best of humanity — turning crisis and loss into hope and healing — every day.
