Producteur obsessionnel denus masculins depuis des an-nées, Daniel Hourdé (né en1947) s’éloigne de plus en plusde la représentation du vivant.Les corps des modèles devien-nent stylisés, exempts de car-actéristiques individuelles etfinissent, en dépit des heures

de pose, par ressembler à ces dessins d’écorchés utiles à l’apprentissage del’anatomie. On dirait que la main du dessinateur n’est plus commandée par unetension émotionnelle mais par une idée du corps tel qu’il doit s’intégrer dans un col-lage en nature morte. La distance avec une représentation unitaire du réel estmatérialisée par la division du support. Le dessin de Hourdé n’est plus l’image del’homme tel que Dieu l’a créé mais un fusain sous verre, affublé ou apparié à matéri-aux divers a priori synthétique. Le corps n’est plus qu’une feuille de papier rayéesystématiquement selon les formules maniéristes du raccourci ou du relief.A l’opposé, Georges Rouault ( 1871-1958), catholique, fils d’un vernisseur de piano

chez Pleyel, s’est évertué àforce de retravailler les mêmesthèmes, à une œuvre d’appro-fondissement, effet de surface,de vernis à la Rembrandt.Pendant que Hourdé divise,Rouault creuse ou plutôtdonne un effet de creusé, derelief, une croûte dirait ses dé-tracteurs, fond de casserole ac-crochée, ragoût, latrines, où,pour reprendre un mot célèbreadressé à un autre, brillequelque chose de divin. Dansles œuvres de Hourdé ce quibrille c’est le verre, l’enveloppe,la distance, et (peut-être) lapeur. L’enveloppe qui protègele corps ramené à la platitudehumoristique et futile d’un in-ventaire, d’un herbier synthé-tique ou d’un keepsake.

in his long obsession with themale nude, Daniel Hourdé(born in 1947), has increasinglymoved away from lifelike rep-resentation. the bodies of hismodels have become stylized,exempt of individual charac-teristics, and despite lengthyposes, can be likened, in the

end, to écorché drawings useful to anatomy study. it is as if the hand of the artistwere no longer controlled by emotional tension, but rather by an idea of the bodyneeding to integrate a collage in still life. the division of the medium materializesthis distance from a unitary representation of reality.Hourdé’s drawing is no longerthe image of man as God created him, but a charcoal drawing under glass, deckedin or matched to diverse and largely synthetic materials. the body is but a sheet ofpaper systematically ruled according to the mannerist formulas of foreshorteningor depth. On the other hand, Georges Rouault (1871-1958), a Roman catholic,the son of a Pleyel piano varnisher, strove, by reworking the same theme, to deepen

his work, surface effects, Rem-brandt-like veneers. WhereHourdé divides, Rouault digsor rather creates a furrowed ef-fect, depth… a daub, accord-ing to his detractors, theexhibited bottom of a pan, astew, latrines, where, to takeup a famous quote addressedto someone else, shines some-thing divine. in Hourdé’s workit is the glass, the envelope, thedistance and (perhaps) fearthat shine. the envelope thatprotects the body reducedto the humorous and futileplatitude of an inventory, asynthetic herbarium or a keep-sake.
