What is No Child Left Behind (NCLB)?

• The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was signed into U.S. law in 2002

• Seeks to increase accountability for student performance in public schools

• Schools whose students don't demonstrate mastery on standardized tests may face certain penalties, and if they don't improve, parents may transfer their students to other schools

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)

• AYP measures reading and math yearly progress by student group and school against state target goals

• State target goals are based on attaining 100% student proficiency by 2013-14

• If just one student group does not meet state target goals in reading or math, the school does not make AYP

AYP measures the progress of subgroups

• The school as a whole• Race• Students with disabilities• Students with limited English proficiency• Economically disadvantaged students

Each group must meet the same set percentage of students performing at grade level in reading and math.

What happens if a school does not make AYP?

• A school that fails to make AYP for two years or more is subject to interventions

•Interventions start with allowing students to transfer to another school

•School districts can be taken over or redesigned by the state

•Ultimately, the school can be closed down

Conclusion

• After NCLB came into law, schools and states have the task of maintaining and disseminating a lot of information. Schools need a tool to help make decisions to create strategies for instructional purposes.
