as a newcomer to Wales some five and half years ago I was almost oblivious to the wealth of dance practice I would subsequently find in this small, but culturally aware nation. I was soon engaged in long and intense conversations with Welsh arts practitioners about how culture defines the Welsh nation, especially post-devolution. What has struck me most is how the landscape, language and traditions of Wales have forged such a forceful and forward-thinking arts sector in a country with just 3 million people.

Wales may indisputably be known as the land of song, but I soon discovered it to also be a nation with an ever increasingly vibrant dance scene, at a participative, community and professional level. The fourteen individuals and eight companies profiled here represent the dynamic extremes of current dance practice. I have been particularly impressed with the strength of independent choreographers and solo artists, whose often collaborative approach to creating new work is based upon the latest performance research and practice, tugging at the edges of the artform to create newer, bolder shapes. Wales also has a wealth of small and midscale companies, who are actively creating their own new work as well as working with renowned international choreographers.

at Wales millennium centre we are proud to have presented many of the artists featured here and remain committed to supporting emerging choreographers and artists as they develop their practice, as well as providing a performance platform for small and midscale companies. I hope that you discover, as I did when I arrived in Wales, the wealth of talent, the sheer energy and buzz that is the Welsh dance scene. Be inspired to learn more, to meet some of the artists, and above all, to see them for your self.

mae’n amhosibl diffinio’r clarkiaid. maent yn defnyddio cymysgfa o ddelweddaeth finiog a chryno sy’n ystumio’r meddwl trwy gyfrwng dawns, theatr, celfyddyd gweledol, cerddoriaeth a chaneuon, i fynegi teimladau sy’n amrywio o hiwmor i aflonyddwch, “… fel rhyw ymosodiad guerilla tywyll-swrealaidd, cosmig gwallgof…” David Adams

The clarks are impossible to define. They use a blend of short, sharp, mind bending imagery through the medium of dance, theatre, visual art, music and song to emote feelings ranging from hilarity to disturbance.

Their performances have been likened to carnivalesque, dada cabaret, “…like some crazed darkly surrealistic cosmic guerrilla attack…” David Adams

mr and mrs clark produce work that can be picked up and placed anywhere.

“movement is my passion and choreography is my understanding of this, including stillness, without stillness there would be no motion and vice versa. I am touched by the beauty, fragility and incertitude of our everyday life, a performer is a reflection of the viewer and provokes a certain curiosity about our existence, in its complexity and simplicity we share emotions” sioned Huws has collaborated with media artist massimiliano simbula since 2002, continuing to research and create pieces that question the association between dance and media, an elucidation of human movement through digital technologies.

“symudiad yw fy niléit a choreograffi yw fy nirnadaeth o hyn, gan gynnwys llonyddwch. Heb lonyddwch, nid oes symudiad ac fel arall. rwyf yn cael fy nghyffwrdd gan harddwch, breuder ac ansicrwydd ein bywydau beunyddiol. adlewyrchiad o’r gwyliwr yw perfformiwr gan ysgogi rhyw chwilfrydedd arbennig ynglyn â’n bodolaeth, yn ei holl gymhlethdod a’i symlrwydd, byddwn yn rhannu emosiynau” mae sioned Huws yn cydweithredu â’r artist cyfryngau massimiliano simbula ers 2002, gan barhau i ymchwilio a chreu darnau sy’n cwestiynu’r cysylltiad rhwng dawns a’r cyfryngau, yn eglurhad o symudiad dynol trwy technolegau digidol.

marc rees is an interdisciplinary artist with a track record for delivering ground breaking, provocative and risk taking projects and a reputation as an accomplished artist and visionary site responsive curator.

most recently, this has led him to develop a number of more architecture-driven artworks, the last being ‘ en residencia’ which was commissioned by and located at Teatro laboral in asturias, northern spain. rees recently won the Wales bid for the cultural olympiad flagship project ‘artist taking the lead’ for which he will transport the fuselage of a Dc-9 aeroplane across Wales as a mobile art space, social sculpture and travelling time capsule. He has also been commissioned by national Theatre Wales to create a location responsive work in Barmouth, north Wales for June 2010 entitled ‘for mountain, sand & sea’. “Each room, each corridor holds dreamlike yet disturbing scenes that seem to have come straight out of a Buñuel film.” El Pais (En Residencia)

artist rhyngddisgyblaethol yw marc rees sydd â hanes cyflawni prosiectau pryfoclyd, mentrus sy’n torri tir newydd ynghyd â bod ag enw da fel artist medrus a churadur â gweledigaeth sy’n ymateb yn dda i bob safle.

yn fwy diweddar, mae hyn wedi’i arwain at ddatblygu sawl gwaith celf sydd wedi’u sbarduno’n fwy gan bensaernïaeth. comisiynwyd a lleolwyd y diweddaraf o’r rhain, en residencia gan Teatro laborai yn asturias, gogledd sbaen. yn ddiweddar, enillodd rees gais cymru ar gyfer prosiect blaenllaw yr olympiad Diwylliannol ‘artist taking the lead’. ar gyfer y prosiect hwn, bydd marc yn mynd â chorff awyren Dc-9 ar draws cymru fel lle celf symudol, cerflun cymdeithasol a chapsiwl amser teithiol. mae hefyd wedi’i gomisiynu gan national Theatre Wales i greu gwaith o’r enw ‘I fynyddoedd, Tywod a’r môr’ sy’n ymateb i safle yn y Bermo yng ngwynedd ar gyfer mis mehefin 2010. “Mae Earth Room. Earth Corridor yn cynnwys golygfeydd breuddwydiol sydd eto’n aflonyddu ac sydd fel pe baent wedi dod yn syth o un o ffilmiau Buñuel.” El Pais (En Residencia)

carolinesabin

[email protected] caroline sabin’s creative interest is divided between dance and the visual arts having trained and worked extensively in both these areas. Her practice includes pieces made for theatre whilst others are intended for gallery spaces. she has produced several short films which continue to be shown in Wales and internationally, one of which – ‘Tune for a Woodland creature’ – has a permanent home in the national library’s film archive.

The power of the performer’s body to transmit the otherwise untranslatable internal human experience is a key factor in her work – as is humour, optimism and beautiful visual imagery. Whilst never shying away from the pains of personal existence, she always hopes to leave an audience inspired with possibility.

“A performer who’s always impressed….Caroline Sabin’s solo was the most sophisticated work of the evening. If I tell you the soundtrack included birthing noises, Arvo Part and Nine Inch Nails you’ll appreciate the emotional range on offer”David Adams for the Western Mail.

mae diddordeb creadigol caroline sabin yn ymrannu’n weddol gyfartal rhwng dawns a’r celfyddydau gweledol ac mae hi wedi teithio a gweithio’n helaeth yn y ddau faes hyn. mae ei hymarfer yn cynnwys gwaith ar gyfer y theatr ac eraill wedi’u bwriadu ar gyfer orielau. mae cynhyrchu sawl ffilm fer sy’n dal i gael eu dangos yng nghymru ac yn rhyngwladol. mae un ohonynt, Tune for a Woodland creature, wedi cael cartref parhaol yn archif sgrin a sain y llyfrgell Genedlaethol.

mae grym corff y berfformwraig i gyfleu’r profiad dynol mewnol nad oes modd fel arall ei drosi, yn ffactor allweddol yn ei gwaith – fel y mae hiwmor, optimistiaeth a delweddaeth weledol brydferth. er na fydd byth yn osgoi poen bodolaeth bersonol, bydd bob amser yn gobeithio gadael ei chynulleidfa wedi’i hysbrydoli gan y posibiliadau.

“Dyma berfformwraig sydd bob amser wedi creu argraff… Unawd Caroline Sabin oedd gwaith mwyaf soffistigedig y noson. Os bydda i’n dweud wrthych fod y trac sain yn cynnwys synau geni, Arvo Part a Nine Inch Nails, byddwch yn gwerthfawrogi’r ystod emosiynol a oedd ar gynnig.” David Adams i’r Western Mail.

Jo shapland has over twenty years professional dance and performance devising experience.

cultivating (and responding through) a sense of creative listening, she seeks to give space for the material or medium to speak, often leaving objects to be altered by natural processes. choreography arises from creative dialogues with these materials, mediums and the performance space.

as Man Troi, she has a track record of bringing together experienced artists to work collaboratively and site-sensitively in interesting places to incorporate live physical performance, music, sonic and visual art installation and video. rooted in landscape, performances and installations are developed and presented in spaces ranging from ruined farm-buildings to traditional proscenium theatres, from natural wilderness to urban architectural interiors.

mae gan Jo shapland dros 20 mlynedd o brofiad ym maes dawns greadigol a dyfeisio perfformiadau.

Gan ymdrin (ac ymateb drwy) ag ymdeimlad â gwrando creadigol, mae’n ceisio rhoi gofod i’r deunydd neu’r cyfrwng siarad, gan adael gwrthrychau’n aml i gael eu newid trwy brosesau naturiol. mae coreograffi’n deillio o ddeialogau creadigol rhwng yr artist a’r deunyddiau hyn, y cyfryngau ynghyd â’r gofod perfformio.

fel Man Troi mae ganddi record cyson o ddwyn at ei gilydd artistiaid profiadol i gydweithredu a hynny’n sensitif i safleoedd mewn mannau diddorol gan gynnwys perfformio corfforol byw, cerddoriaeth, gosodwaith celf weledol a sain a fideo. Wedi’u gwreiddio yn y dirwedd, bydd y perfformio a’r gosodwaith yn cael eu datblygu a’u cyflwyno mewn mannau sy’n amrywio o hen adfeilion fferm i theatrau prosceniwm traddodiadol, o fannau naturiol diffaith i bensaernïaeth drefol fewnol.

cai Tomos is an independent artist born in north Wales. His solo work combines dark humor, honest physicality and both his languages of Welsh and english. He is interested in sourcing autobiographical material. His work is often based on recounting,re-enacting, and recalling memory. His themes revolve around human nature. The mind, the heart, and what it is to be human: celebrating the ordinary, the mundane and extraordinary journey of being human.

His current work is an ongoing project entitled ‘calon’ meaning heart in Welsh. This new work is a combination of the personal and the scientific, looking in detail at the heart, weaving personnel stories with fact based science. using dance, moving image, text, sound and objects, it traces a journey of the heart from the beginning to the very last moment.

artist annibynnol a aned yng ngogledd cymru yw cai Tomos. mae ei waith unigol yn cyfuno hiwmor tywyll, corfforoldeb gonest a’i ddwy iaith, y Gymraeg a’r saesneg. mae’n ymddiddori mewn ffynonellau deunydd hunangofiannol. yn aml mae ei waith yn seiliedig ar ailadrodd, ail-lunio atgofion. mae ei themâu’n troi o gwmpas y natur ddynol – y meddwl, y galon a’r hyn y mae’n ei olygu i fod yn ddynol: gan ddathlu taith gyffredin ac anghyffredin bod yn ddynol.

ei waith diweddaraf yw gwaith parhaus o’r enw ‘calon’. mae’r gwaith newydd hwn yn cyfuno’r personol a’r gwyddonol ag edrych yn fanwl ar y galon, gan blethu storïau personol â ffeithiau sy’n seiliedig ar wyddoniaeth. Gan ddefnyddio dawns, delweddau symudol, testun, sain, gwrthrychau, mae’n olrhain taith y galon o’r dechrau i’r eiliad olaf un.

as a movement artist, simon’s work has involved a transition from the formal presentation context to the theatre and studio space to a primary physical engagement with land and the qualities of season, people and place. His work interfaces directly with lived and sensory experience, usually involving a process of walking and journeying, through which an audience may participate or become witness.

movement continues to be central to the work he makes. The body’s ecological paradigm and relation to its environment are the basis from which he mediates and realises a series of enquiries and experiences shared directly or indirectly with an audience.

anushie yarnell is an enigmatic, idiosyncratic and visionary performance artist.

she positions her self, her identity, her place in the world and her sexuality at the centre of her work and creates performances which blend the everyday with extraordinary flights of invention.

Her works reveal an alternate territory for the audience and performer to co-inhabit. she unfolds a dimension synergising fantasy and reality, reconstructing fragments from the realm of everyday life into existential, functional daydreaming. The frictional romance between choreographed and improvisational movement generates a process of transformation and accidental self-deconstruction. Her works draw on personal experience, past and future mythologies, notions of paradise and civilisation, dreams and cultural diversity.

yarnell performs her work in traditional performance spaces and both specific outdoor and indoor sites. she has toured her work in Peru, Japan and france.

Beyond repair Dance (BrD) was created in 2006 under the co-artistic direction of matthew Howells and Jane coulston. BrD create highly technical, movement based work which appeals to both a dance and non dance audience. Their work explores manipulation and challenging of the body, exploring and pushing the dancers technique to extremes.
