the front entrance is leveled as a civic extension to the foot path, working to make the street a part of the theatres lobby. By removing any landscaping or planting at the buildings facade the form reads like it does in its expo context, as a block object on flat ground, heightening the relationship between large form public and small form private architecture

Its strange to think that a proposal like this would be such a frightening thought for the residents of Pentridge Village. There is an entire block of bad 3 story strip mall just around the corner that is welcomed.

the established part of Pentridge Village to the north....... looks like nothing, you could be anywhere, so friendly

this is a development worth over $300,000,000, in an old maximum security prison, next to an enormous park, with all the infrastructure a city needs.

The theatre is sited in the centre of the new developments own private central park to encourage use within the “gated community” by ‘non-locals’, an important ingredient in urban diversity.

The landscape of the park has been sculpted up to form a mound or hill to view the action from. Apart from aiding in the viewing of the outdoor screen, terrain is fun for kids to play on and gives views back out to the merri creek.

Corner stores are scattered throughout back block suburban, and usefully fill the space between your pantry and the supermarket

These are a type totally under represented by common contemporary developments like that in coburg’s pentridge prison grounds. They cater to a scale of convenience essential to suburban domestic life, that of milk, bread, smokes, sour worm lollies, lotto tickets, magazines and potato cakes. Without this instant overpriced convenience residents get in their cars and drive to aldi.

The architecture of this type stands alone from its residential surrounds, characterised by signage, advertising, chiseled corners, no setback and corner canopies.

These canopies are important in allowing the passerby or shopper shelter and the environment to stop and talk or rest. The corner cut helps define the corner as a corner in a civic sense and is emphasised by the placing of the front door at this public cross road. The shops with visible pitched roofs are particularly interesting, they are tight enough and steep enough to give the impression of an almost sculptural tower scenario at this small domestic scale.
