Overtopping of dams can lead to failure, potentially causing significant downstream damage including loss of life and property. The HydroTurf® Advanced Revetment System is specifically designed to protect earthen embankment dams from overtopping. Many embankment dams have a high probability of failure due to inadequate height and insufficient spillway capacity. HydroTurf provides fail-proof erosion protection for the high-velocity applications of dam spillways and overtopping. It has been shown to be able to withstand 5.5 feet of overtopping resulting in a velocity of 40 ft/s with no instability, erosion or damage. It also has exceptional performance in severe hydraulic jump and wave overtopping conditions. HydroTurf has a number of benefits over traditional revetment systems: Excellent hydraulic performance 50+ years of functional longevity Less costly construction Rapid, low-impact and scalable construction Minimal long-term maintenance Natural aesthetics Prevents burrowing from animals DAM OVERTOPPING PROTECTION

HydroTurf® has been comp-rehensively tested at Colorado State University (CSU). CSU’s laboratory has the largest flumes for hydraulic testing in the world. HydroTurf did not reach failure at a maximum steady state overtop velocity of 40 ft/s and for 13 hours in the wave overtop simulator being subjected to a 500-year hurricane event for the New Orleans region.

Featured as a viable alternative for dam protection in FEMA’s Technical Manual: Overtopping Protection for Dams.
