Research in Medicine UnitProgress – the first 2 years
Kellie Cloney, Class of 2017
Jeff Kirby, Professor, Department of Bioethics
(on behalf of) RIM Unit Governance Committee
Brief synopsis of RIM Unit goals…
To promote interest, and to enable knowledge acquisition and skill development, in health research throughout all four undergraduate years
To establish and foster supportive, one-on-one mentoring relationships between Dalhousie University health researchers and medial learners
To lay the theoretical and practical groundwork for potential actualization of a learner’s choice to make health research an integral and stimulating component of her/his medical career
RIM Unit progress-to-dateBrief historical notes…
Implementation of RIM Program in September of 2013/14 academic year with Class of 2017
Yes, there were ‘growing pains’ and some developmental ‘storming’ influenced by such factors as: Rapid program implementation Class of 2017 learner resistance to introduction to an additional program with
academic requirements (and perceived, related loss of a Med I fall elective experience)
Class of 2018 learner resistance to introduction of the RIM examination
With the Dean Marrie’s assent, there was an intentional shift to a longitudinal unit and a lateral governance structure in Spring 2014
Continued progression toward optimal integration with other medical school curricular components in 2015/16
Class of 2017: Sample research project topics
Impact of acute exposure to progesterone on myocardial Ca2+ homeostasis
Experiences of caring for a child with insulin-requiring diabetes in a food-insecure household (qualitative methodology)
Exploring social media as a new tool to help pediatric patients manage chronic pain
De-fatting steatotic livers for transplantation
Reducing Aboriginal experiences of racism in health care through medical school intervention
The hidden curriculum in medical education (systematic review methodology)
Factors affecting the retaining of family physicians in rural PEI communities
Class of 2018: Sample research project topics
Access to care after acute myocardial infarction with cardiogenic shock
A novel approach to the outpatient assessment and management of anemia
Gestational weight and childhood mass index trajectories
Development of novel human T cell receptors for adoptive T cell therapy
Geometry of the parent vessel as a predictor of recurrence of intracranial aneurysms post endovascular embolization
The incidence of alcohol-related trauma recidivism (systematic review)
Addressing gender inequity among healthcare professionals in East Africa
